Review of grow-out techniques under tropical conditions: Experience of Thailand on seabass (Lates calcarifer ) and grouper (Epinephelus malabaricus) ArchiMer
Tookwinas, S.
Seabass and grouper have been reared in cages in coastal waters in Thailand for 10 years. The fingerlings are nursed for a month in nylon nursing cages. Then, the juvenile fish are reared in culture cages which can be stationary or floating. The cage is usually 5 x 5 x 2 metres. The stocking density is around 500 to 2000 fish per cage. The survival rate is approximately 80%. The selling price at the culture site is 80 baht and 250 baht per kg for sea bass and grouper respectively. The culture method and economics of culture are explained.

Comment épargner les juvéniles de soles et de gadidés dans la pêcherie de crevette grise, Deuxième partie ArchiMer
Vacherot, Jean-philippe; Dupouy, Herve; Meillat, Marc.
Starting from the year 2000, the European Union planned to establish the use of a selective trawl in brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) fisheries. In fact, the brown shrimp is caught by a bottom trawl equipped with stretched 20 mm exempted meshing in estuary areas where the nurseries of flat fish and gadidae are located. For Vilaine's estuary, Dupouy et al (1997) estimated at about 1 tonne of flat fish and one tonne of gadidae the loss in equivalent fish of marketable size, per landed tonne of brown shrimp. In this document, the authors introduce improvements resulting from the use of selective trawls developed in France (Asselin and Devismes trawls), and they show by what means the selectivity of these trawls can be improved further.

Effect of an herbivorous diet on energy balance of Litopenaeus vannamei at selected ontogenetic stages ArchiMer
Maldonado, Carlos; Cuzon, Gerard; Guzman, Emilio; Brito, Roberto; Soto, Luis; Arena, Leticia; Gaxiola, Gabriela.
Herbivorous (20% vegetable protein, 40% carbohydrate) and carnivorous diets (40% marine animal protein, 20% carbohydrate) were experimentally tested to assess their effect on the energy balance and energetic substrates utilized by postlarvae (PL's /15 days) and juvenile shrimp (3-6 g) of Litopenaeus vannamei. Postlarval stage 60 (PL60, early juveniles) shrimps fed HeD and CaD diets, then late juveniles (3-6 g) acclimated to the same diets were tested for their respective energy partitioning potential. No significant differences (p>0.05) on growth were obtained in early juveniles (mean final wet weight of 0.19 g). However in late juvenile stages a significant difference (p<0.05) in growth rate was observed. In terms of energy partitioning, both early...

Sprint swimming performance of juvenile European sea bass ArchiMer
Nelson, J; Claireaux, Guy.
Despite its potential for determining animal success in a variety of ecologically important situations, very little is known about the sprint swimming performance of fishes. To evaluate whether selection on sprint swimming performance occurs in the wild, one must first demonstrate measurable and reproducible variation of sprint performance. In this study, we employ a computer-controlled laser detection system to study the sprint performance of 75 juvenile European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax raised under uniform conditions in the laboratory. This percichthyid is a prized sport and food fish in Europe and similar ecologically to the North American striped bass Morone saxatilis. Individual European sea bass were subjected to endurance swimming performance...

Spatial variability in digenean metacercariae infection of 0-group common sole Solea solea among nurseries along the French Atlantic coast ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric; Begout, Marie-laure; Sasal, Pierre.
We sampled 0-group sole juveniles (N = 174) in September and October 2003 in 9 major nurseries located along the French Atlantic coast (English Channel and Bay of Biscay). 0-group sole were infected with 3 genera of digenean metacercariae, Timoniella spp. (Acanthostomidae), Prosorhynchus crucibulum and Prosorhynchus sp. A (Bucephalidae), Podocotyle sp. (Opecoelidae), and an unidentified species of Digenea. Parasite infection levels in the English Channel nurseries were lower, and the community composition was different from Bay of Biscay nurseries. We hypothesize that the difference between geographic areas was due to differences in first intermediate host communities and, to a lesser extent, because of lower temperatures in the English Channel compared to...

Biometrie et Croissance des Jeunes Crevettes Trachypenaeus de la Guadeloupe (Antilles Francaises). ArchiMer
The principal biometric relations of juvenile Trachypenaeus similis similis and T. constrictus in Guadeloupe were calculated from 1976 to 1978. The examination of these relations yields few differences between the two species. A growth curve was established according to the sequences of modal values; these were determined according to weekly size frequency distributions over three different periods of time. In the zone studied, the growth of young Trachypenaeus is more rapid than that of the young Penaeus.

Définition d'un modèle d'élevage larvaire intensif pour la daurade Sparus auratus ArchiMer
Ounais-guschemann, Nadia.
This study defines rearing parameters for mass products of 30-day old post larvae. Continuous lighting (600 lux) optimizes the predatory activity and suppresses the feeding rhythm. For 4-5 mm larvae (15 days), food ingestion slows down if the prey concentration in the tank is below 5 rotifers/ml, while there is no such threshold for 6-7 mm larvae (22 days). The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis , between 100 and 200 mu m, is an adequate initial prey, it can be replaced by Artemia salina for 7-8 mm larvae (30 days). It is observed that free amino acids and essential fatty acids contents have a prominent role in larvae growth; docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3) content could be determined. Finally, the development of the swim bladder is facilitated by the renewal...

Differentiation de juveniles de Chlamys varia et Chlamys opercularis ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon.
The recent developments in collecting techniques for spat of Chlamys operoularis and Chlamys varia make it necessary to find criteria for separating these two species at early life stages. Biométrie criteria for differenciating between species have been found to be usable on individuals of a height superior to 3 mm. A quick différenciation of smaller individuals is possible by observation, under light microscope, of the périostracum external morphology on left valves.

Summer mortality of hatchery-produced Pacific oyster spat (Crassostrea gigas). I. Estimation of genetic parameters for survival and growth ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Ernande, Bruno; Bedier, Edouard; Boudry, Pierre.
The multidisciplinary project "MOREST" aims to improve our understanding of causes of summer mortality in Crassostrea gigas juveniles in France and to reduce its impact on oyster production. As pail of the MOREST project, 43 full-sib families nested within 17 half-sib families were produced, planted out and tested in 3 sites during summer 2001 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for this trait. A strong genetic basis was found for survival as narrow-sense heritability estimates ranged from 0.47 to 1.08, with higher values in sites where summer mortality was higher. Genetic correlations across sites were positive and very high for survival, indicating no genotype by environment interaction. In contrast, lower genetic variation was observed...

The change of animal biometrics (body mass and body size) can reveal important information about their living environment as well as determine the survival potential and reproductive success of individuals and thus the persistence of populations. However, weighing individuals like marine turtles in the field presents important logistical difficulties. In this context, estimating body mass based on body size is a crucial issue. Furthermore, the determinants of the variability of the parameters for this relationship can provide information about the quality of the environment and the manner in which individuals exploit the available resources. This is of particular importance in young individuals which growth quality might be a determinant of adult fitness....

Effects of reservoirs water level variations on fish recruitment Neotropical Ichthyology
Lima,Fabíula T. de; Reynalte-Tataje,David A.; Zaniboni-Filho,Evoy.
ABSTRACT The construction of hydroelectric power plants has many social and environmental impacts. Among them, the impacts on fish communities, which habitats are drastically modified by dams, with consequences across the ecosystem. This study aimed to assess the influence of water level (WL) variations in the reservoirs of the Itá and Machadinho hydroelectric plants on the recruitment of fish species from the upper Uruguay River in southern Brazil. The data analyzed resulted from the WL variation produced exclusively by the hydroelectric plants generation and were collected between the years 2001 and 2012. The results showed significant correlations between the abundance of juvenile fish and the hydrological parameters only for some reproductive guilds....

Composition, density and biomass of fish community from the surf zone as a function of the lunar cycle at Miramar Beach in Cabedelo, Paraíba Neotropical Ichthyology
Pessoa,Willy Vila Nova; Ramos,Jonas de Assis Almeida; Oliveira,Paulo Guilherme Vasconcelos de.
ABSTRACT The influence of the moon cycles on the ichthyofauna has been little studied in the surf zone. In this study, the number of species, density and biomass were evaluated as a function of the moon. A total of 49 species distributed in 24 families were captured in two areas of Miramar beach. The mean density was significant high in the weaning and low in the new moon, while density and biomass together showed differences for areas. The most abundant species were Anchoa tricolor and Trachinotus falcatus (new moon), and Anchovia clupeoides showed significant differences in the waning moon. The RDA indicates that turbidity influenced significantly the presence of two species group. The group I were represented by Stellifer brasiliensis, Trachinotus...

Fish assemblages along a morphodynamic continuum on three tropical beaches Neotropical Ichthyology
Oliveira,Ronnie E. M. C. C.; Pessanha,André L. M..
A comparative study involving three mesotidal beaches from reflective to estuarine states was conducted between October 2010 and September 2011 in the estuary of Mamanguape River, northeastern Brazil. The aim was to test for differences in fish assemblages along a morphodynamic continuum, particularly the effects of wave action. In total, 3,732 fish from 71 species were examined; Rhinosardinia bahiensisand Atherinella brasiliensisdominated the estuarine beach, whereas Trachinotus carolinus dominated the reflective beach. Fish assemblages were structured by spatial differences among the sites, and overall abundance, richness and biomass demonstrated a clear increasing trend from the reflective to the estuarine beaches, indicating a primary influence of wave...

Áreas potenciales de descarte de merluza para la actividad de la flota comercial argentina OceanDocs
Dato, C.V.; Villarino, M.F.; Cañete, G.R..
To improve the quality of the resource assessment it is necessary to estimate discards and quantify them applying an adequate methodology. The purpose of this work is to detect areas where the activity of the commercial fleet coincides with zones of high concentration of juveniles because they are potential discard areas. To establish possible seasonal and/or interannual variations, length distribution data derived from hake research surveys carried out on board of INIDEP vessels during the 1986-1993 period were analyzed. Samples were grouped per statistical rectangle on the basis of catch weighted average and mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis were calculated. The resulting parameters were subjected to a cluster analysis using the Euclidean distance...
