Herbivorous (20% vegetable protein, 40% carbohydrate) and carnivorous diets (40% marine animal protein, 20% carbohydrate) were experimentally tested to assess their effect on the energy balance and energetic substrates utilized by postlarvae (PL's /15 days) and juvenile shrimp (3-6 g) of Litopenaeus vannamei. Postlarval stage 60 (PL60, early juveniles) shrimps fed HeD and CaD diets, then late juveniles (3-6 g) acclimated to the same diets were tested for their respective energy partitioning potential. No significant differences (p>0.05) on growth were obtained in early juveniles (mean final wet weight of 0.19 g). However in late juvenile stages a significant difference (p<0.05) in growth rate was observed. In terms of energy partitioning, both early... |

Despite its potential for determining animal success in a variety of ecologically important situations, very little is known about the sprint swimming performance of fishes. To evaluate whether selection on sprint swimming performance occurs in the wild, one must first demonstrate measurable and reproducible variation of sprint performance. In this study, we employ a computer-controlled laser detection system to study the sprint performance of 75 juvenile European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax raised under uniform conditions in the laboratory. This percichthyid is a prized sport and food fish in Europe and similar ecologically to the North American striped bass Morone saxatilis. Individual European sea bass were subjected to endurance swimming performance... |

We sampled 0-group sole juveniles (N = 174) in September and October 2003 in 9 major nurseries located along the French Atlantic coast (English Channel and Bay of Biscay). 0-group sole were infected with 3 genera of digenean metacercariae, Timoniella spp. (Acanthostomidae), Prosorhynchus crucibulum and Prosorhynchus sp. A (Bucephalidae), Podocotyle sp. (Opecoelidae), and an unidentified species of Digenea. Parasite infection levels in the English Channel nurseries were lower, and the community composition was different from Bay of Biscay nurseries. We hypothesize that the difference between geographic areas was due to differences in first intermediate host communities and, to a lesser extent, because of lower temperatures in the English Channel compared to... |

The principal biometric relations of juvenile Trachypenaeus similis similis and T. constrictus in Guadeloupe were calculated from 1976 to 1978. The examination of these relations yields few differences between the two species. A growth curve was established according to the sequences of modal values; these were determined according to weekly size frequency distributions over three different periods of time. In the zone studied, the growth of young Trachypenaeus is more rapid than that of the young Penaeus. |

The recent developments in collecting techniques for spat of Chlamys operoularis and Chlamys varia make it necessary to find criteria for separating these two species at early life stages. Biométrie criteria for differenciating between species have been found to be usable on individuals of a height superior to 3 mm. A quick différenciation of smaller individuals is possible by observation, under light microscope, of the périostracum external morphology on left valves. |

The multidisciplinary project "MOREST" aims to improve our understanding of causes of summer mortality in Crassostrea gigas juveniles in France and to reduce its impact on oyster production. As pail of the MOREST project, 43 full-sib families nested within 17 half-sib families were produced, planted out and tested in 3 sites during summer 2001 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for this trait. A strong genetic basis was found for survival as narrow-sense heritability estimates ranged from 0.47 to 1.08, with higher values in sites where summer mortality was higher. Genetic correlations across sites were positive and very high for survival, indicating no genotype by environment interaction. In contrast, lower genetic variation was observed... |

The change of animal biometrics (body mass and body size) can reveal important information about their living environment as well as determine the survival potential and reproductive success of individuals and thus the persistence of populations. However, weighing individuals like marine turtles in the field presents important logistical difficulties. In this context, estimating body mass based on body size is a crucial issue. Furthermore, the determinants of the variability of the parameters for this relationship can provide information about the quality of the environment and the manner in which individuals exploit the available resources. This is of particular importance in young individuals which growth quality might be a determinant of adult fitness.... |

Astyanax erythropterus (Holmberg, 1891) originally described on the basis of one juvenile, is redescribed herein based on juveniles and adults from the type-localiy. The species differs from its congeners by the combination of 11-13 transverse rows scales above lateral line and 8-10 rows below lateral line; 49-54 perforated scales in the lateral series; iii-v,38-42 anal-fin rays, and dorsal, anal and caudal fins vermilion red in juveniles. The vermilion red coloration of unpaired fins in juveniles of Astyanax is only known in A. correntinus. |

A comparative study involving three mesotidal beaches from reflective to estuarine states was conducted between October 2010 and September 2011 in the estuary of Mamanguape River, northeastern Brazil. The aim was to test for differences in fish assemblages along a morphodynamic continuum, particularly the effects of wave action. In total, 3,732 fish from 71 species were examined; Rhinosardinia bahiensisand Atherinella brasiliensisdominated the estuarine beach, whereas Trachinotus carolinus dominated the reflective beach. Fish assemblages were structured by spatial differences among the sites, and overall abundance, richness and biomass demonstrated a clear increasing trend from the reflective to the estuarine beaches, indicating a primary influence of wave... |

Hake Merluccius hubbsi fecundity was estimated with the gravimetric method using ovaries with hydrated oocytes without post-ovulatory follicles. Samples were obtained in three research cruises in the Argentine Sea, off Chubut Province, SW of Peninsula Valdes between 42°S and 45°S, near Isla Escondida, during December 1993, 1994 and 1996, time which coincides with the most important reproductive activity. Relative fecundity values were 722 plus or minus 107, 606 plus or minus 60 and 533 plus or minus 26 oocytes per gram of female without ovaries, respectively. Partial fecundity was adjusted to a potential model for total length and weight without ovaries, corresponding: F=0.9988 Lt3.294 and F=197.91 P1.1585 for 1994 and F=6.9785 Lt2.816 and F=552.22 P0.9889... |
