Despite numerous efforts of various professional groups, the level of production diseases in livestock production remains on an unsatisfying high level. Barriers in the process of knowledge transfer in connection with the improvement of the animal health status have been the topic of a study taking different stakeholder perspectives into account. Using instruments of communication science, the perspectives of farmers, agricultural and veterinarian advisors as well as animal scientists were brought together and discussed in workshops. The process revealed the following barriers in the transfer of knowledge: diverging comprehension of animal health, complexity behind multifactorial production diseases, reluctance to assume responsibility, and role conflicts.... |

Habitat fragmentation, the process by which relatively continuous habitats is broken into smaller pieces, occurs in natural systems but is to a high degree also human-induced through landscape use. Fragmentation of the landscape produces a series of habitat patches surrounded by a matrix of different habitats and land use regimes. The major landscape consequences of fragmentation are loss of habitat, reduction in habitat patch size, and increasing isolation of habitat patches. In general, population performance declines in response to habitat loss but size of remaining area and isolation effects is known also to influence the population trend. Small mammals are well suited for examination of population responses to habitat fragmentation as they have... |

Agro-ecological Service Crops (ASC) are introduced in the agro-ecosystems to provide or enhance ecological services, thus promoting the whole soil-plant system equilibrium. ASC introduction and proper management have impact on soil quality and fertility and soil nutrients losses. They also contribute to increase soil C sink potential, to mitigate GHG emissions and influence weeds, diseases and pests occurrence. To avoid competition with the subsequent cash crops, the growth of the interposed ASC is terminated in advance of the cash crop planting. The traditional, most widespread, technique used to terminate the ASC is incorporation as green manure into the soil by tillage. However, since tillage is an energy and labour consuming and soil disturbing... |

The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari CIHEAM-Bari produced this report as a part of the Organic Knowledge Network Arable (OK-Net Arable) project, Work Package 4. CIHEAM-Bari has developed two facilitated courses and a self-learning one according to the international E-Learning standards to promote the use of end-user material beyond the farmer innovation groups and the knowledge platform of the project. This report provides a description of these courses. Facilitated courses were developed using Leaning Management System (LMS) on the CIHEAM-Bari e-learning platform and were addressed to 70 participants from 26 countries (77% European countries and 23% non EU Mediterranean countries). Participants represented different institutions and profiles,... |

This paper aims to assess the contribution, role, and impacts of the Science-Based Research and Innovation Program (ISRIP) on farmers’ transition to organic production in the Camargue. Focusing on how, and to what extent, research actors have contributed to the innovation pathway, we applied a methods-mix. The Participatory Impact Pathway Analysis (PIPA) was used to uncover complex mechanisms along the innovation process; the Outcome Harvesting method to adapt PIPA to the requirements of an ex-post evaluation, and the Social Network Analysis (SNA) to emphasize actors’ relationships in relation to the development process. We demonstrate that the research has contributed to change by developing co-learning interactions with farmers, although this was not... |

The findings and recommendations presented in this Research Brief are based on six regional case studies, which were performed to develop and test a methodological framework for assessing the impacts of Scientific Research on Agriculture (SRA). The aim was to investigate the complex innovation processes occurring along related impact pathways. The case studies were selected in five countries for their agro-ecological and socio-economic diversity. The methodology developed was based on the Participatory Impact Pathway Analysis(PIPA) and complemented by some additional methods, mainly to adapt the PIPA approach to the requirements of an ex-post impact assessment (using Outcome Harvesting). We also put more emphasis on the role of the actor network,... |

The aim of the paper is to present results from a review of successful mid-scale organic values-based chains, where characteristics of such chains and their strategies for growth are in focus. The work is part of an EU-project, Healthy Growth, where ten European countries participate. Results are based on reviewed research in each participating country and a general review of research on successful chains. Results show that successful mid-scale values-based chains are characterized by an emphasis on diverse values and product qualities, they emphasize personal relationships between chain actors, are based on a diversity of consciously chosen sale channels both direct and indirect and utilize a variety of communication channels/means to communicate values... |

Farmers in the mid-hills of Nepal follow diverse farming systems. The peri-urban area of this region, where population density is higher, faces several problems in farming. While hills suffer from erosion because they are erodible, the peri-urban areas face the problem of decline in factor productivity, particularly in intensively cultivated farmlands. The present study is concerned with simulating farm income on a regional scale based on soil management practices. Spatial explicit simulation shows that the loss of farm income due to degradation is substantially higher in hills while it is lower in valley bottoms. Strategy formulation and testing in the spatial environment indicates that Geographic Information System is an appropriate methodological tool... |

This paper explores the potential of Actor Network Theory (ANT) in understanding how the process of interaction and translation between human and non-human actors contribute to the development, adoption and diffusion of science-based innovations linked to the transition to organic farming. The study relies on two case studies, the French Camargue case covering a range of technical and social innovations, and the case from Bulgaria focusing on the development of a technical and product innovation, i.e. a veterinary product for organic beekeeping. The paper shows the limitations of classical approaches in studying innovations since they underestimate the role of heterogeneous actors, their status, and how they interact with each other. We argue that focusing... |
