Tillering dynamics in pastures of guinea grass subjected to grazing severities under intermittent stocking R. Bras. Zootec.
Montagner,Denise Baptaglin; Nascimento Júnior,Domicio do; Vilela,Hélio Henrique; Sousa,Braulio Maia de Lana; Euclides,Valéria Pacheco Batista; Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Carloto,Marciele Neves.
This experiment was carried out to analyze the tillering dynamics of the species Panicum maximum cv. Mombaca subjected to three post-grazing heights: residue of 30 cm (30); residue of 50 cm (50); and residue of 50 cm during spring and summer, lowered to 40 cm in the first fall season grazing and to 30 cm in the following grazing cycle, resuming to 50 cm after the first grazing of the following spring season (50-30). Grazings were initiated whenever the swards intercepted 95% of the incident light. The post-grazing heights were allocated in the experimental units in a completely randomized block design with three replications. The density of basal tillers did not vary between the residual heights evaluated. Swards managed with variable residual height...

Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Bueno,Adriana Amaral de Oliveira; Carnevalli,Roberta Aparecida; Uebele,Marina Castro; Bueno,Fernando Oliveira; Hodgson,John; Matthew,Cory; Arnold,Greg C.; Morais,Jozivaldo Prudêncio Gomes de.
Grazing strategies promote changes in sward structure that can affect patterns of herbage accumulation and sward flexibility to management. This experiment evaluated sward structural characteristics and herbage accumulation of Mombaça guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Mombaça) subjected to rotational stocking managements. Treatments involved grazing when swards reached either 95 or 100% interception of the incident light (LI), to post-grazing heights of 30 and 50 cm, and were allocated to 2,000 m² paddocks according to a randomised complete block design in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with four replications, from January 2001 to February 2002. Sward canopy changed from a vertical to a more horizontal orientation as the light interception area index...

Sward structure and herbage yield of rotationally stocked pastures of 'Marandu' palisadegrass [Brachiaria brizantha (A.Rich.) Stapf] as affected by herbage allowance Scientia Agricola
Braga,Gustavo José; Pedreira,Carlos Guilherme Silveira; Herling,Valdo Rodrigues; Luz,Pedro Henrique de Cerqueira; Lima,César Gonçalves de.
In ruminant-forage systems herbage allowance (HAL) has a major impact on grazing intensity and sward structure, affecting animals, plants, and ultimately, pasture yield. Data on HAL responses of tropical cultivated pastures are scarce and this information may be useful in optimizing pasture utilization. The objective of this study was to describe and contrast sward structure and herbage accumulation responses of 'Marandu' palisadegrass [Brachiaria brizantha (A.Rich.) Stapf] pastures to HAL during two grazing seasons (warm-rainy season of 2003 and 2004). Treatments were four daily HAL levels, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg herbage mass per 100 kg live weight (%) in a rotational stocking system with 35 days of grazing cycle (28-day rest; 7-d grazing). Post-graze swards...

Silveira,Márcia Cristina Teixeira da; Silva,Sila Carneiro Da; Souza Júnior,Salim Jacaúna de; Barbero,Leandro Martins; Rodrigues,Carlindo Santos; Limão,Veridiana Aparecida; Pena,Karine da Silva; Nascimento Júnior,Domicio do.
Grazing management strategies affect not only herbage accumulation but also the efficiency of grazing. This study aimed to evaluate herbage accumulation (leaf, stem and dead material), grazing efficiency and losses of mulato grass (a Brachiaria ruziziensis × Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu hybrid) subjected to strategies of rotational stocking management. Treatments consisted of combinations between two post-grazing heights (15 and 20 cm) and two pre-grazing conditions (95 % and maximum canopy light interception (LI)) assigned to experimental units (1200-m² paddocks) according to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement and a randomized complete block design, with four replications. The experiment was carried out from Jan 2008 to Mar 2009. Season of the year...

Influence of high planting densities and arrangements on yield and fruit development of Musa AAA Simmonds Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Barrera-Violet,José Luis; Cartagena-Valenzuela,José Régulo; Nanclares-Gómez,Omar Alonso.
Abstract Banana is one of the most abundantly consumed fruits in the world for its contribution to human nutrition, including an important content of potassium. Given the social contribution of this crop in the cropping areas of Colombia, it is necessary to develop agronomic management strategies that contribute to increasing productivity and offering alternatives that regulate the effects of climate seasonality on banana production in the Uraba region of Colombia. For this purpose, different planting densities (2,000, 2,500, 3,000 and 3,500 plants ha-1) and planting arrangements (triangle, rectangle and double furrow), plus a relative control (1,700 plants ha-1 under triangle arrangement), were evaluated in the banana cv. Williams. The experimental design...

Dry matter intake and milk yield of cows grazing Xaraés palisadegrass under different management strategies Animal Sciences
Carvalho, Vinícius Emanoel; Araújo, Saulo Alberto do Carmo; Alves, Danilo de Oliveira; Santos, Carlos César dos; Rocha, Norberto Silva.
This study aimed to evaluate the intake and milk yield of crossbred cows (Holstein x Zebu), under two management strategies, based on 95% light interception and fixed days. Eight lactating cows with body weight of 466 kg (± 35 kg) and lactation stage of 137 days (± 107 days) were used, four animals were assigned to each treatment. Dry matter intake was estimated indirectly, using neutral detergent insoluble fiber as internal indicator and chromium oxide as external indicator. This was a completely randomized design, with four replications, two grazing strategies and three days of occupation. The animals under light management showed dry matter intake on the first day (11.42 kg) similar to the second day (9.57 kg), and this was similar to the third day...

Grazing criteria for perennial peanut (Arachis pintoi cv. Amarillo) consumed by sheep in rotational stocking Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Kröning,A.B.; Costa,O.A.D.; Farias,P.P.; Martins,L.A.; Ott,O.G.; Macari,S.; Ferreira,O.G.L..
ABSTRACT The objective of work was to study the productive profile of perennial peanut in a rotational stocking environment under different criteria. The treatments corresponded to pre-grazing height of 14 and 18cm or 95% of light interception (LI) distributed in a completely randomized design. The studied variables were forage mass, percentage of structural components, forage mass and the structural components in the lower and upper canopy strata. The entrance criterion of 18cm in height, despite having higher forage mass, presented lower percentage of leaves and higher percentage of stems and forage losses. The criteria of 14cm and 95% light interception presented similar production between them and the highest rate of forage accumulation. In all...

A grazing height target to minimize tiller stem elongation rate in annual ryegrass swards Ciência Rural
Santos,Gabriela Trevisan; Zanini,Guilherme Doneda; Padilha,Deisy Andrade; Sbrissia,André Fischer.
ABSTRACT: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) is one of the most cultivated temperate annual forage crop around the world. Despite that, there is little information about the process of stem elongation during its vegetative growth. This information would be useful for grazing management purposes. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the herbage accumulation and stem elongation rates in annual ryegrass pastures submitted to intermittent stocking. The experimental design used was a completely randomized 2x2 factorial with three replications. The treatments were defined by the combination of two pre-grazing heights (15 and 25cm) associated with two post-grazing heights (4 and 8cm). The herbage accumulation rates were higher in pastures with 25cm...
