Colonization of benthic invertebrates on artificial and natural substrate in a Neotropical lotic environment in Southern Brazil Biological Sciences
Camargo, Nilce Svarcz Jungles de; Lehun, Atsler Luana; Rosa, Jonathan; Bueno-Krawczyk, Ana Carolina de Deus.
The objective of this research was to validate the colonization process on natural and artificial substrates by benthic invertebrates in a tropical stream in South Brazil. The samples were performed in July and August-2012, and 32 samplers were used, being 16 natural and 16 artificial substrates. In each sample, two replicas were taken for each substrate at the 2th, 4th, 7th, 14th, 21th 28th, 35th and 42th days of colonization. The organisms were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. In both substrates 3,070 benthic invertebrates were detected, of which 1,753 individuals were collected on the natural substrate, and 1,317 on the artificial substrate. From the identified taxa 8.5% were not dominant (Anacroneuria, Orthocladiinae, Tupiara,...

Cd, Cu, and Mn from Uruguay River Basin in Uruguaiana, RS, Brazil, and their toxicological potential for human leukocyte Biological Sciences
Costa, Gislaine Rezer; Rocha, Mariana Balhego; Querol, Marcus Vinicius Morini; Dal Magro, Jacir; Machado, Michel Mansur; Oliveira, Luís Flávio Souza de.
This study assessed the limnology from the Medium Uruguay River Basin in Uruguaiana, Brazil, with a focus on the concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, and Mn), to assess the toxicological potential (cytotoxicity and genotoxicity) for humans using as biological matrix of study human leukocyte cells. The conductivity, resistivity, and dissolved O2 levels exceeded the limits recommended by the National Environmental Council (Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente - CONAMA). The percentage of non-viable human leukocyte cells exposed to water samples was approximately 20% higher than that of the negative control (<3%), but similar to the positive control. The DNA damage index was high for all heavy metal concentrations assayed when compared to the negative...

Morphology and morphometry of upland lakes over lateritic crust, Serra dos Carajás, southeastern Amazon region Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,MARCIO S. DA; GUIMARÃES,JOSÉ T.F.; SOUZA FILHO,PEDRO W.M.; NASCIMENTO JÚNIOR,WILSON; SAHOO,PRAFULLA K.; COSTA,FRANCISCO R. DA; SILVA JÚNIOR,RENATO O.; RODRIGUES,TARCÍSIO M.; COSTA,MARLENE F. DA.
ABSTRACT High-resolution satellite images, digital elevation models, bathymetric and sedimentological surveys coupled with statistical analysis were used to understand the physical environment and discuss their influence on water quality of the five upland lakes of Serra Sul dos Carajás, southeast Amazonia. The lakes have mid-altitude ranges (elevation), very small (catchment) and shallow to very shallow (central basins). Based on the length, area and volume, Violão and TI (Três Irmãs)-3 lakes may present large vertical movements of the water due to wind action and weakly stratified waters. Trophic conditions based on depth and shore development (Ld) parameters must be used with caution, since Amendoim Lake is relatively deep, but it is oligotrophic to...

Relationship between space distribution of the benthic macroinvertebrates community and trophic state in a Neotropical reservoir (Itupararanga, Brazil) Biota Neotropica
Beghelli,Frederico Guilherme de Souza; Santos,André Cordeiro Alves dos; Urso-Guimarães,Maria Virgínia; Calijuri,Maria do Carmo.
The purpose of this work was to verify the benthic macroinvertebrates community responses through environmental factors along a headwater tropical reservoir. Samplings were taken with a Van-Veen grab along the reservoir in littoral and profundal regions and in the headwater, next to the dam and the middle of the reservoir. Samples were taken during both wet and dry seasons. Dissolved oxygen concentrations, electric conductivity, temperature and pH near the sediment have been performed in situ, at every sampling station by using a multiprobe and Secchi disc. Total water phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations were analyzed to determine the trophic state index. Sediment's organic matter, total phosphorus, nitrogen concentrations and granulometric...

Zooplankton community composition and some limnological aspects of an oxbow lake of the Paraopeba River, São Francisco River Basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil BABT
Sampaio,Edson Vieira; López,Cristiane Machado.
Some limnological aspects of Lake Massacará (adjoining the Paraopeba River, São Francisco River Basin) were studied during two periods of the hydrological cycle. Water transparency was equally low during both the periods. During high water, thermal stratification was recorded, with a clinograde oxygen profile; pH was slightly acid, and conductivity was higher near the bottom. Concentrations of inorganic carbon and ammonia, and rates of primary production were higher than during the low water period. During the latter period, complete mixing occurred, with a clinograde oxygen profile; pH was slightly acid, and conductivity unvarying with depth. Higher concentrations of nitrate were found than during high water. With regard to the zooplankton communities,...
