An Unstructured Numerical Model to Study Wind-Driven Circulation Patterns in a Managed Coastal Mediterranean Wetland: The Vaccares Lagoon System ArchiMer
Boutron, Olivier; Bertrand, Olivier; Fiandrino, Annie; Hoehener, Patrick; Sandoz, Alain; Cherain, Yves; Coulet, Eric; Chauvelon, Philippe.
The spatiotemporal structure of wind-driven circulation patterns and associated water exchanges can drive important bio-hydrodynamic interactions in shallow lagoons. The Vaccares lagoon system is a complex shallow hydrosystem located in the central part of the Rhone Delta (France). It is internationally recognized as part of a biosphere reserve within the framework of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme, and as a RAMSAR site. Due to its frequent occurrence in this area, and considering the shallowness of the Vaccares lagoon system, wind is assumed to play a major role in the hydrodynamic and biological processes. In this study, a hydrodynamic model was developed to investigate the structure of wind-driven circulations in the Vaccares lagoon system, to...

Selection of culture media and in vitro assessment of temperature-dependent development of Nomuraea rileyi Neotropical Entomology
Edelstein,Julio D.; Lecuona,Roberto E.; Trumper,Eduardo V..
In vitro development - radial growth and sporulation - of Nomuraea rileyi isolates from Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner and Plusiinae larvae was studied on four culture media: Sabouraud, maltose, agar and yeast - SMAY; SMAY plus rice extract - SMAYR; complete medium for N. rileyi - CMNr and maltose agar yeast with potato extract - MAYP. Their development on a selected medium (MAYP) was analysed at five temperatures. Two mathematical models were fitted to in vitro and in vivo temperature dependent radial growth rates and thermal requirements were estimated. The medium with potato and yeast extract induced the highest growth rate in most cases, while SMAY induced the lowest rates for the tested isolates. Estimated optimum temperatures for mycelium in vitro...

Simulation model for phytomona epidemics in coconut trees Neotropical Entomology
Sgrillo,Ricardo B.; Moura,José I.L.; Sgrillo,Katia R.P.A..
A mathematical deterministic compartmental model of a system composed by the host plant - coconut palms, the pathogen microorganism - Phytomonas staheli McGhee & McGhee, and the insect vector - Lincus lobuliger Bred. (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) was developed. A healthy insect becomes infected after feeding on a diseased tree starting an epidemic by disseminating P. staheli to healthy palms. This process initiates an exponential disease growth that decreases when the number of infected plants increases. The software Vensim DSS® was used as a tool to build a simulation model of disease dynamics. Compartments (stocks) for healthy, infected and eradicated plants represented the plant components of the system. There are two sub models for the insect...

Ecological modeling and pest population management: a possible and necessary connection in a changing world Neotropical Entomology
Lima,Ernesto A B F; Ferreira,Claudia P; Godoy,Wesley A C.
Ecological modeling is an important tool for investigating dynamic behavior patterns in populations, trophic interactions, and behavioral ecology. However, the ecological patterns that reflect population oscillation trends are often not clearly visible without analytical instruments such as ecological models. Thus, ecological modeling plays a fundamental role in describing demographic processes that are important for population dynamics. Ecological models, besides making possible the visualization of ecological patterns, may also reveal patterns of population persistence in many trophic systems, including prey-predator or host-parasitoid relationships, interactions that are commonly present in integrated pest management programs. In this forum, we present...

Temperature-dependent development of the entomopathogenic fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Neotropical Entomology
Edelstein,Julio D.; Trumper,Eduardo V.; Lecuona,Roberto E..
The influence of temperature on the development rate of the entomopathogenic fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) 3rd-instar larvae was studied under constant temperature regimes. A non linear model was used to describe temperature-dependent vegetative and reproductive development rates of the fungus. The temperature required to reach the highest vegetative development rate was estimated to be 25.5ºC while lower and upper developmental thresholds were 11ºC and 30ºC, respectively. The rate of development for conidia release was stable from 18ºC to 26ºC. The estimated lower and upper thresholds of vegetative development coincide with conditions during the natural epizootics in central Argentina. Non-linear effects of...

Ribas,Giovana Ghisleni; Streck,Nereu Augusto; Duarte Junior,Ary José; Ribeiro,Bruna San Martin Rolin; Pilecco,Isabela Bulegon; Rossato,Ioran Guedes; Richter,Gean Leonardo; Bexaira,Kelin Pribs; Pereira,Vladison Fogliato; Zanon,Alencar Junior.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to model, in the SimulArroz model, the three flood-irrigated rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars currently most grown in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The experiments to calibrate and validate the model were conducted in the municipalities of Cachoeirinha, Santa Maria, Uruguaiana, Santa Vitória do Palmar, and Cachoeira do Sul during four crop seasons. The number of leaves, phenology, aboveground dry matter biomass, and yield of each cultivar were evaluated. The results showed a slight overestimate of the R1, R4, and R9 stages; however, overall, the SimulArroz model had a good performance in simulating rice phenology for the three studied genotypes. Furthermore, the model had a reasonable accuracy in simulating...

Adjustment of growth models in broiler chickens PAB
Demuner,Leandro Félix; Suckeveris,Diana; Muñoz,Julian Andrés; Caetano,Vinicius Camargo; Lima,Cesar Gonçalves de; Faria Filho,Daniel Emygdio de; Faria,Douglas Emygdio de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to investigate adjustments of the Gompertz, Logistic, von Bertalanffy, and Richards growth models, in male and female chickens of the Cobb 500, Ross 308, and Hubbard Flex lines. Initially, 1,800 chickens were randomly housed in 36 pens, with six replicates per lineage and sex, fed ad libitum with feed according to gender, and bred until 56 days of age. Average weekly body weight for each line and sex was used to estimate model parameters using the ordinary least squares, weighted by the inverse variance of the body weight and weighted with a first-order autocorrelated error structure. Weighted models and weighted autocorrelated error models showed different parameter values when compared with the unweighted models,...

Non-Destructive Model to Predict Commelina diffusa Leaf Area Planta Daninha
CARVALHO,L.B.; ALVES,E.A.; BIANCO,S..
ABSTRACT: Leaf length (L), leaf width (W), and leaf area (LA) were measured from 100 leaves aiming to determine a simple linear equation (Y=a*X) to predict the leaf area of Commelina diffusa, an important weed infesting annual and perennial crops in Brazil and worldwide. Results indicate the equation LA=0.7*LW reliably estimates the leaf area of C. diffusa, after correlating LA with LW, and then validating that equation by analyzing four new 25-leaf samples.

Dynamics of the control of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti Linnaeus (Diptera, Culicidae) by Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis, related with temperature, density and concentration of insecticide Rev. Bras. entomol.
Duque L,Jonny E.; Navarro-Silva,Mario Antônio.
The dynamics of the control of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti Linnaeus, (Diptera, Culicidae) by Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis has been related with the temperature, density and concentration of the insecticide. A mathematical model for biological control of Aedes aegypti with Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis (Bti) was constructed by using data from the literature regarding the biology of the vector. The life cycle was described by differential equations. Lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC95) of Bti were determined in the laboratory under different experimental conditions. Temperature, colony, larvae density and bioinsecticide concentration presented marked differences in the analysis of the whole set of variables; although when analyzed...

Linear Programming in the economic estimate of livestock-crop integration: application to a Brazilian dairy farm R. Bras. Zootec.
Gameiro,Augusto Hauber; Rocco,Cleber Damião; Caixeta Filho,José Vicente.
ABSTRACT A linear programming mathematical model was applied to a representative dairy farm located in Brazil. The results showed that optimization models are relevant tools to assist in the planning and management of agricultural production, as well as to assist in estimating potential gains from the use of integrated systems. Diversification was a necessary condition for economic viability. A total cost reduction potential of about 30% was revealed when a scenario of lower levels of diversification was contrasted to one of higher levels. Technical complementarities proved to be important sources of economies. The possibility of reusing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium present in animal waste could be increased to 167%, while water reuse could be...

Development of a calculation model and production cost index for feedlot beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Sartorello,Gustavo Lineu; Bastos,João Paulo Sigolo Teixeira; Gameiro,Augusto Hauber.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop a feedlot beef cattle calculation model and production cost analysis and, from the results obtained, devise a production cost index. A case study was conducted to understand the characteristics of the productive processes of a commercial feedlot. Then, based on the Economic Theory, cost items of the farm under analysis were identified and transferred to a spreadsheet. The survey included ten feedlot farmers from the state of São Paulo and other nine from the state of Goiás and was carried out to determine representative properties, and prices of items used were monitored. Production costs of each farm were calculated, and theoretical concepts of index numbers were used to devise the feedlot cattle...

Sugarcane maturity estimation through edaphic-climatic parameters Scientia Agricola
Scarpari,Maximiliano Salles; Beauclair,Edgar Gomes Ferreira de.
Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) grows under different weather conditions directly affecting crop maturation. Raw material quality predicting models are important tools in sugarcane crop management; the goal of these models is to provide productivity estimates during harvesting, increasing the efficiency of strategical and administrative decisions. The objective of this work was developing a model to predict Total Recoverable Sugars (TRS) during harvesting, using data related to production factors such as soil water storage and negative degree-days. The database of a sugar mill for the crop seasons 1999/2000, 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 was analyzed, and statistical models were tested to estimate raw material. The maturity model for a one-year old...

Developing a continuous adjustment factor for dry matter intake of gestating and lactating ewes Scientia Agricola
Gallo,Sarita Bonagurio; Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo.
ABSTRACT: Intake is a multifactorial process that is influenced by animal type, environmental factors, and diet characteristics. Sheep, especially, have specific eating habits, with a greater selection of ingested feed compared to cattle. Thus, predictive equations for dry matter intake (DMI) must constantly be reviewed. The objective of this study was to combine different adjustment factors to develop one continuous adjustment factor for predicting the DMI of pregnant, dry, and lactating ewes. The equations evaluated for non-lactation ewes accounts for metabolic body weight and weight gain, and the equation for lactating ewes includes milk production and its fat content. The database used in this study was pooled from hair sheep ewes, two to four years...

Multiobjective optimization of economic balances of sugarcane harvest biomass Scientia Agricola
Florentino,Helenice de Oliveira; Moreno,Edmundo Vergara; Sartori,Maria Márcia Pereira.
The fact that Brazil is the world's largest sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) producer, leads to a great concern about the cropping systems used, since the most common practice involves manual harvesting prior to straw burning. Brazilian authorities approved a law prohibiting the burning practice of crop residues prior to harvest. However mechanized harvest creates the new problem of how to deal with the residues. Many studies have proposed the use of these residues as an energy source. The major difficulty in its use is how to economically transport sugarcane harvested biomass from the farm to a processing center. The aim of this work was to develop a model to optimize plant variety selection, minimize the cost of the residual biomass transfer process, to...

Mathematical tool to size rural digesters Scientia Agricola
Florentino,Helenice de Oliveira.
Anaerobic digesters have been highlighted due to the current energy crisis and its consequent search for alternative energy sources, allied to the intense process of livestock farming and agriculture modernization, which besides demanding a lot of energy, produces a great amount of crop and animal residues, most of the times generating sanitary problems. The aim of this work is to provide a mathematical tool to establish parameters for projects of construction of rural digesters, considering the response to energy demand, the suitability of the dimensions of the systems, yield factors and the guarantee of functionality. Non-linear optimization models, of easy resolution, for the three main types of rural digesters were formulated in this way. With the...

Economic optimization of the number of recipients in bovine embryo transfer programs Scientia Agricola
Beltrame,Renato Travassos; Barioni,Luis Gustavo; Maestri,Breno Dala; Quirino,Celia Raquel.
Purchase and maintenance of recipient females account for a large proportion of the costs and determine the number of calves that can be produced in an embryo transfer program. However, the large variability of embryo production by the donors and the need to purchase and synchronize the recipients before knowing the number of embryos collected make it difficult for the decision maker to identify the ideal number of recipient females to allocate. An ex-ante evaluation to determine the optimal number of recipient females was carried out through a sensitivity analysis for the ratio between the number of recipients and donors in a simulation model. The variability for the number of embryos collected was accounted for by applying the Monte Carlo simulation...

Estimation of papaya leaf area using the central vein length Scientia Agricola
Campostrini,Eliemar; Yamanishi,Osvaldo Kiyoshi.
Four genotypes of papaya (Carica papaya L.) two from the 'Solo' group (Sunrise Solo and Improved Sunrise Solo line 72/12) and two from the 'Formosa' group (Tainung 02 and Known-You 01), grown in Macaé, RJ, Brazil (lat. 22(0) 24' S, long. 41(0) 42' W), were used in this study. Twenty-five mature leaves from each genotype were sampled four and five months after seedling transplant to the field to determine the length of the leaf central vein (LLCV) and the leaf area (LA). According to covariance analyses there were no significant differences in the slope and intercept of the mathematical models calculated for each genotype. Thus, a single mathematical model (Log LA = 0.315 + 1.85 Log LLCV, R²=0.898) was adjusted to estimate the LA using the length of LLCV...

SIMULATION OF BIOMASS DYNAMICS IN PLANKTON OF A HIGH-ALTITUDE ANDEAN TROPICAL RESERVOIR IN COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
PARRA-GARCÍA,Edison Andrés; RIVERA-PARRA,Nicole; RODRÍGUEZ,Boris A; HOYOS RINCÓN,Isabel Cristina.
ABSTRACT The understanding of the relationships between the planktonic communities in a reservoir allows us to infer possible changes in the redistribution of matter and energy flows in these systems. This work proposes a dynamic model for the trophic network of the Riogrande II tropical reservoir, which integrates the planktonic trophic chains of detritus and grazing, limiting the prey-predator interactions by introducing the prey meeting factor (pmf). We built a dynamic model of mass balance supported by an extensive bibliographic search. The limitations of consumers and resources were represented simultaneously by means of the pmf. The data used to validate the model were compiled from previous investigations carried out in this reservoir from 2010 to...
