Soletchnik, Patrick; Goyard, Emmanuel; Thouard, Emmanuel.

Oceans cover approximately 70% of the Earth's surface and, with about 60% of the World's population living within 200 km of the coast, they have an untold impact on all of us. Not surprisingly, for people living close to the coast or those who depend on the ocean for their livelihood, regular forecasts of ocean conditions are just as important as traditional weather forecasts. Therefore, development of the infrastructure needed to support and sustain independent, European operational ocean forecasting, and the associated coastal and marine information services, are key priorities of the joint Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) initiative by the European Commission and ESA.

Fauvel, Christian.
During this visit, research work on the physiology and zootechny of reproduction of different US teams were compared to ours. It is clear that we have the same problems to solve and that research programs are rather similar, but they must take into account the local conditions. This fact limits the possibilities of cooperation. Nevertheless a very good knowledge of each work has been noted.

Soletchnik, Patrick; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The study of maturation and spawning of the oyster is part of a research program to investigate the summer mortalities of the oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Marennes-Oléron Bay. Four maturity stages were simultaneously obtained by diet and thermal conditioning (immature, low maturation, mature and post-spawning stages). Measurements of clearance, filtration, absorption and respiration rates allowed a calculation of the scope for growth and hence an estimation of the oyster's energetic budget at various maturity stages. Male and female oysters had similar physiological responses. The filtration rate ranged from 2.4 to 2.6 1.h(-1) at the early stages of maturation and decreased to 1.8 1.h.' during the maturity stage. Growth rate resulting from gonad...

Maurer, Daniele; Borel, Michel.
Two-year-old oysters have a physiology which is reproduction-oriented, their maturation occurring synchronously among oysters from the same batch. The importance of the spring accumulation of glycogenated stocks varies through the years and correlates with the growth stage. Glucidic components are quickly used during the month preceding egg-laying and are transformed into lipid stocks for the oocytes. One-year-old oysters develop at different rates, some of them not showing any sign of maturation and the percentage of laying individuals varies through the years. Glycogenated stocks accumulate in a similar way in both age-classes and their more precocious and more intense use by young molluscs is not necessarily linked with their gametogenesis and growth,...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The study of sexual maturation and spawning in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is part of a vast research programme that endeavours to understand the causes of mortality that occur sporadically during the spring and summer seasons in the Marennes-Oléron Bay. Thermal and diet conditioning were used to obtain oysters at each stage of maturity simultaneously. Using the measured rates of clearance, consumption, absorption and respiration provided estimates of growth potential and gave the energetic budget of oysters at different stages of sexual maturity. Physiological responses were similar for males and females. Filtration decreased from 2.4 to 2.6 l.h (-1) to 1.8 l.h (-1) with increasing maturity. Weight gain was associated with gonad development and...

Exposure to chronic moderate hypoxia impacts physiological and developmental traits of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae ArchiMer
Vanderplancke, Gwenaelle; Claireaux, Guy; Quazuguel, Patrick; Huelvan, Christine; Corporeau, Charlotte; Mazurais, David; Zambonino-infante, Jose-luis.
Since European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae occurred in coastal and estuarine waters at early life stages, they are likely to be exposed to reduced dissolved oxygen waters at a sensitive developmental stage. However, the effects of hypoxia at larval stage, which depend in part on fish species, remain very poorly documented in European sea bass. In the present study, the impacts of an experimental exposure to a chronic moderate hypoxia (40 % air saturation) between 30 and 38 days post-hatching on the physiological and developmental traits of European sea bass larvae were assessed. This study was based on the investigation of survival and growth rates, parameters related to energy metabolism [Citrate Synthase (CS) and Cytochrome-c Oxidase (COX)...

A new vision of the origin and the oocyte development in the Ostariophysi applied to Gymnotus sylvius (Teleostei: Gymnotiformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
França,Gisleine Fernanda; Grier,Harry J.; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani.
Based on new knowledge coming from marine perciform species, the origin of oocytes and their development in the Ostariophysi, Gymnotus sylvius is described. In both Gymnotus sylvius and marine perciform fish, oogonia are found in the germinal epithelium that forms the surface of the ovarian lamellae. At the commencement of folliculogenesis, proliferation of oogonia and their entrance into meiosis gives rise to germ cell nests that extend into the stroma from the germinal epithelium. Both cell nests and the germinal epithelium are supported by the same basement membrane that separates them from the stroma. At the time of meiotic arrest, oocytes in a cell nest become separated one from the other as processes of prefollicle cells, these being derived from...

Ould Mohamed Fall, K.; Inejih, C.A.O..
The sexual maturity scale for the females of Octopus vulgaris is...

Relationship between biospeckle laser technique and firmness of Acrocomia aculeata fruits AGRIAMBI
Costa,Anderson G.; Pinto,Francisco A. C.; Braga,Roberto A.; Motoike,Sergio Y.; Gracia,Luis M. N..
ABSTRACT Knowing the maturation of the Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm) fruit is decisive for harvest to be performed when the fruit has a higher content and quality of oil. There are different approaches to monitor maturation and they can be classified as destructive and non-destructive. Variables obtained by optical instruments have been used to determine maturation stage. The present study evaluated the relationship between the biological activity measured by the optical technique of biospeckle laser and firmness, measured in the Acrocomia aculeata fruit pulp between the 41st and 61st week after flowering. The biological activity was quantified by biospeckle images, while the fruit pulp firmness was determined by digital penetrometer. Correlations...

Cangussú,Lucas V. de S.; David,Andréia M. S. de S.; Araújo,Eduardo F.; Alves,Rayane A.; Nunes,Rebeca A.; Amaro,Hugo T. R..
ABSTRACT Early harvest may decrease seed exposure in the field after physiological maturation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of glyphosate desiccant at different plant desiccation times at pre-harvest on the physiological quality of crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst) seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, involving the application of glyphosate desiccant in the plants at pre-harvest and the control (without plant desiccation) and four desiccation times, with three replicates per treatment. The desiccation of crambe plants at pre-harvest with glyphosate was efficient, positively affecting seed germination and vigor. Application of the desiccant in the plants, with 90% of brown seeds, at...

Use of classifier to determine coffee harvest time by detachment force AGRIAMBI
Barros,Murilo M. de; Silva,Fábio M. da; Costa,Anderson G.; Ferraz,Gabriel A. e S.; Silva,Flávio C. da.
ABSTRACT Coffee quality is an essential aspect to increase its commercial value and for the Brazilian coffee business to remain prominent in the world market. Fruit maturity stage at harvest is an important factor that affects the quality and commercial value of the product. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a classifier using neural networks to distinguish green coffee fruits from mature coffee fruits, based on the detachment force. Fruit detachment force and the percentage value of the maturity stage were measured during a 75-day harvest window. Collections were carried out biweekly, resulting in five different moments within the harvest period. A classifier was developed using neural networks to distinguish green fruits from mature...

Ethylene and brassinosteroid effect on strawberry ripening after field spray Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Ayub,Ricardo Antonio; Reis,Letícia; Lopes,Precila Zambotto; Bosetto,Luane.
Abstract In contrast to ripening of climacteric fruits knowledge, non-climacteric fruits ripening still poorly understood. In this sense, strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa L. Duch) is a high commercial crop and has an expressive world production that has been used as a model study. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect on physicochemical and phytochemical characteristics of strawberry Cv. Camiño Real, in four maturation stages (green, white, pink and red) after the ethylene (Etephon®) and brassinosteroid (epi-brassinolide) exogenous spray. The evaluations were carried out at application time (field assay) and after 24h (post-harvest assay). Brassinosteroid application tends to reduce phenolic compounds content mainly in the red stage,...

Chlorophyll fluorescence of the testa of Brassica oleracea seeds as an indicator of seed maturity and seed quality Scientia Agricola
Jalink,H.; Frandas,A.; Schoor,R. van der; Bino,J.B..
Chlorophyll fluorescence of the testa of seeds is proposed as a non-invasive method for the determination of maturity and quality of seeds. In this study cabbage seeds (Brassica oleracea) were sorted individually based on the chlorophyll fluorescence signals into four subsamples labeled with respect to their chlorophyll fluorescence signal (low, medium, high and very high). The results show that the magnitude of the chlorophyll fluorescence signal was inversely related to the quality of the seeds, expressed as germination %, normal seedling %, germination rate (T50) and uniformity of germination (T75-T25). The seed lot could be improved from 90 to 97% normal seedlings by sorting out 13% of the seeds with very high chlorophyll fluorescence signals....
