Devenir de l'atrazine dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron (France) - Approche par la modélisation hydrodynamique, hydrosédimentaire et biogéochlmique ArchiMer
Vanhoutte Brunier, Alice.
Atrazine is the most widely used herbicide on cultured areas. This pesticide is degraded during its transport in rivers and streams, to the coastal area. Marennes Oleron is the main french oyster farming area, receiving the fresh water from the Charente river and all the drainage coming from the coastal cultivated marshlands. Agriculture is thus claimed to be responsible for shellfish mortality in the aquaculture area. To simulate the changing fate of atrazine in the environment, a modelling strategy has been selected, a) First, using a two-way hydrodynamic model developped by IFREMER, the atrazine dilution trail in the Marennes Oleron area was simulated.Combined with larvae bioassays of Crassostrea gigas (Japanese oyster), the results show atrazine rates...

A laboratory model system for analysing microbial interactions occurring in anoxic estuarine sediments. ArchiMer
Herbert, R; Keith, S.
Defined mixed populations of Clostridium butyricum, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Chromatium vinosum co-existed for long periods when grown in a single stage chemostat with glucose as sole carbon source. The nature and availability of the inorganic nitrogen source exerted a major effect on carbon flow in the experimental system. The data show that both the C. butyricum and D. desulfuricans isolates can utilise NO sub(3) as an e super(-)acceptor with an increase in cell yield. Under these growth conditions the free S super(2-) levels were lower resulting in more stable mixed populations. In addition the data show that the C. butyricum produces more oxidised fermentation end-products (acetate) when NO sub(3) super(-) was available and more reduced products...

Why carrying capacity models are useful tools for management of bivalve molluscs culture ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice.
In areas where oyster or mussel culture is very intensive, declines of growth rate and decreases of survival rate have occurred. For these reasons, plans have been proposed to regulate the cultivated biomasses in order to fit the carrying capacity of the different ecosystems (Heral et al 1990; Heral, 1991). In areas where new aquaculture of molluscs is beginning, oyster or mussel farmers need to know how large the extension of the culture could be and what the maximal densities should be in order to obtain the maximum economic benefit. Furthermore, as mollusc cultures are developed in coastal areas, they are very susceptible to changes in environmental conditions that can modify trophic relationships, or directly reduce growth rate, physiological...

Approche de la capacité trophique d'un écosystème conchylicole ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Prou, Jean.
After a short bibliographical study of the different approaches for determination of the trophic capacity of a bay for molluscs culture, the authors, with a global mode, show the relations between the growth performance of the oysters Crassostrea gigas in relation with the cultivated stocks. The volumes of consumed and assimilated food are calculated for the stocks in relation with the incoming volumes of water in the bay and the residence time for neap tide and spring tide. The authors find a decrease of growth rate in relation with the volume of consumed food. When it is above 60% and when the volume of assimilated food is above 20%, there is a large decrease of the growth of oysters.

Anthropogenic carbon distributions in the Atlantic Ocean: data-based estimates from the Arctic to the Antarctic ArchiMer
Vazquez-rodriguez, Marcos; Touratier, Franck; Lo Monaco, Claire; Waugh, D. W.; Padin, X. A.; Bellerby, R. G. J.; Goyet, Catherine; Metzl, Nicolas; Rios, Aida F.; Perez, Fiz F..
Five of the most recent observational methods to estimate anthropogenic CO2 (C-ant) are applied to a high-quality dataset from five representative sections of the Atlantic Ocean extending from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Between latitudes 60 degrees N-40 degrees S all methods give similar spatial distributions and magnitude of C-ant. However, discrepancies are found in some regions, in particular in the Southern Ocean and Nordic Seas. The differences in the Southern Ocean have a significant impact on the anthropogenic carbon inventories. The calculated total inventories of C-ant for the Atlantic referred to 1994 vary from 48 to 67 Pg (10(15) g) of carbon, with an average of 54 +/- 8 Pg C, which is higher than previous estimates. These results, both the...

The need for a protean fisheries science to address the degradation of exploited aquatic ecosystems ArchiMer
Drouineau, Hilaire; Lobry, Jeremy; Bez, Nicolas; Travers-trolet, Morgane; Vermard, Youen; Gascuel, Didier.
In this introductory paper we highlight key questions that were discussed during the symposium on “Status, functioning and shifts in marine ecosystems” organized by the Association Française d’Halieutique (French Association for Fisheries Sciences, Montpellier, France, July 2015). This symposium illustrated that fisheries science is now working at multiple scales and on all dimensions of socio-ecosystems (ecological, political, sociological, and economic), with a great diversity of approaches and taking into account different levels of complexity while acknowledging diverse sources of uncertainty. We argue that we should go one step further and call for a protean fisheries science to address the deteriorated states of aquatic ecosystems caused by...

Integration of observations of the coastal ocean continuum, from regional oceans to shelf seas and estuaries/deltas with models, can substantially increase the value of observations and enable a wealth of applications. In particular, models can play a critical role at connecting sparse observations, synthesizing them, and assisting the design of observational networks; in turn, whenever available, observations can guide coastal model development. Coastal observations should sample the two-way interactions between nearshore, estuarine and shelf processes and open ocean processes, while accounting for the different pace of circulation drivers, such as the fast atmospheric, hydrological and tidal processes and the slower general ocean circulation and climate...

Scaling of coastal phytoplankton features by optical remote sensors: comparison with a regional ecosystem model ArchiMer
Druon, Jean-noel; Loyer, S; Gohin, Francis.
Different scales of hydrological and biological patterns of the Bay of Biscay are assessed using space-borne and airborne optical remote sensing data, field measurements and a 3-dimensional biophysical model. If field measurements provide accurate values on the vertical dimension, ocean colour data offer frequent observations of surface biological patterns at various scales of major importance for the validation of ecosystem modelling. Although the hydrobiological model of the continental margin reproduces the main seasonal variability of surface biomass, the optical remote sensing data have helped to identify low grid resolution, input inaccuracies and neglect of swell-induced erosion mechanism as model limitations in shallow waters. Airborne remote...

Recently, the curriculum and the educational methodologies associated with health sciences courses are being reviewed and adapted. Pre-clinical sciences, such as anatomy and embryology are as well subjected to those changes. In human embryology courses it is common to use models to represent the different phases of development to facilitate learning, since the students can see and touch the models, obtaining knowledge by analogies. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if the construction of models by the students during practical embryology classes would improve or facilitate their learning. One year after the classes, 60 students answered a questionnaire with nine objective questions, including spaces for suggestions and observations. The...

Development and Application of the GIS-Based Water Mass Analysis Integrated System. OceanDocs
Zhang, Yuexia; MIao, Zhenqing; Yan, Shiqiang.
The research on water masses is always one important facet of Oceanography. I adopt the method of Fuzzy Density Clustering to analyse water masses. Meanwhile, I use Visual Basic 6.0 as developing platform and utilize the MapX components to develop the platform of GIS. By integrating the Water Masses Model compiled by FORTRAN language, and GIS using Tight Coupling, I develop an Integrated System. That makes all phases are finished in one condition, including the gain of computing grid, the pick-up and analysis of data, the choice of parameters and resetting, the computing of model, and the result’s visualization. It improves the efficiency of the data analysis and decision-making. Finally, this system is applied in the Zhoushan fishing ground and adjacent...

Modeling of ocean mesoscale eddy and its application in the underwater acoustic propagation. OceanDocs
Jia-xun, Li; Ren, Zhang; Chen-zhao, Liu; Hong-jun, Fan.
Aiming at the influence of ocean mesoscale eddy on underwater acoustic propagation, a theoretical computation model of ocean mesoscale eddy was established based on the in-situ hydrographic data in the sea area of ocean mesoscale eddy. An underwater acoustic model-MMPE was used to simulate the acoustic propagation under the influence of different types, different intensities and positions of eddies, and different frequencies and depths of sources. It is found that warm-core eddy can make the convergence zone "move back" and the width of it increases, while cold-core eddy can make the convergence zone "move forward" and the width of it decreases. The bigger the intensity of eddy, the more notable the "forward "or "back "effect. Sound source located depths...

Study of the water quality in Liaohe Park based on the model of GAM. OceanDocs
Song, Wenping; Dai, Yuanyuan; Dong, Yubo.
This paper assesses the quality of Daliao river through Liaohe Park based on the model of GAM for water quality analysis and the monitoring data from 2006 to 2011.The results showed that the value of pH per year tended to the average; the DO in 2011 was much higher than that in other years, and the DO in 2006 was lower than the standard value; the quality risk in six sections was still higher than the standard value in 2007, which was caused by the high concentrations of COD. However, the value of ammonia nitrogen changes was only 40% related to DO and COD.

Dispersión de larvas de langosta en el Caribe basada en simulaciones numéricas OceanDocs
Gutiérrez Delgado, A. R.; Baisre Alvarez, J.; Alvarez Cruz, A..
