Caenopachys hartigii (Ratzeburg) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Doryctinae) confirmed for Italy, with notes on the status of the genus Caenopachys Foerster Naturalis
Mancini, D.; Priore, R.; Battaglia, D.; Achterberg, C. van.
The Palaearctic species Caenopachys hartigii (Ratzeburg, 1848) has been collected in the National Park of Pollino (S Italy), which is the first exact confirmation for the Italian fauna. A brief nomenclatural history of the genus Caenopachys Foerster, 1862, is given, its status is discussed and it is elevated from synonymy. The type species is re-described and illustrated; a key to both West Palaearctic species is given, and some biological notes are added.

Un nouveau Microparasellidae (Crustacé Isopode) du Haut-Atlas; aspects phylogénétiques et biogéographiques Naturalis
Yacoubi-Khebiza, M.; Boulanouar, M.; Coineau, N..
The interstitial stygobiotic isopods of the genus Microcharon (Crustacea) are diversified in Morocco. A new species, M. ourikensis, is described. The new species shows some original characters for this genus: large size, strong elongation in the first male pleopod exopodal inner lobe, 5-dentate mandibular pars incisiva, and 5 spines on the last mandibular palp segment. The species is a member of the Ibero-Maghrebin messoulii group. It is an endemic representative of the Ourika valley groundwater in the Moroccan High Atlas. It derives from a littoral marine ancestor which could have colonized the continental subterranean water during Turonian or Senonian Tethyan regressions.

Production and marketing of organic fruits and vegetables in Morocco Organic Eprints
EL MALOUI, Hamid.
Organic agriculture in Morocco is still in its infancy. In absence of domestic market, the whole production is exported towards the European market. Moroccan organic exports of fruits and vegetables are growing sharply. Yet, the exported quantity is still limited. The late establishment of national standards, the lack of public support, the absence of local market and the inadequate marketing structure are the main hindrances of organic production development in the Kingdom. The aim of this study is to identify the opportunities and constraints facing the organic production and marketing, to provide an understanding of the limitations of the existing production system and exports’ strategies, and to suggest how these limitations can be overcome and...

Study on the introduction of organic tomato greenhouse in Massa plain, Agadir, South Morocco Organic Eprints
Ayoub, Mohamed.
Organic tomato is growing these last four years in Morocco. As the local market isn't promoting, a great effort has been done in order to get the international market and mainly an European one. The outside season production of tomato need the greenhouse. That's why a greenhouse production of organic tomato is an important point to deal with it. (JAMEA EL MOSTAFA, 23 july, 2003)

Water pricing options for the Middle Drâa River Basin in Morocco AgEcon
Heidecke, Claudia; Kuhn, Arnim; Klose, Stephan.
This paper discusses the possible effects of various ways of charging for water in an integrated modeling framework adapted to the Drâa River Basin in southeastern Morocco. Declining surface water availability in the basin has led to an increase in groundwater use for irrigation in recent decades, even though groundwater extraction is more costly than using surface water. The trade-off between the pricing of ground and surface water is discussed based on recursive-dynamic simulations over a ten-year period. The results identify groundwater pricing as an economically and environmentally favorable option, assuming that revenues from water charges are redistributed to farmers.

EU Trade Preferences for Moroccan Tomato Exports--Who Benefits? AgEcon
Chemnitz, Christine; Grethe, Harald.
The EU applies a complex system of preferences for tomato imports from Morocco. Quantities are fixed and serve as entry price quotas and tariff rate quotas at the same time. This paper provides empirical evidence of i) the existence of an economic rent under the EU preferential scheme for tomato imports from Morocco of about €24-36.5 mill. per year, and ii) the distribution of that rent. Due to the structure of the Moroccan export sector as well as the EU method of allocating import licenses, it is likely that a large part of the quota rent ends up at the Moroccan side and that a dissipation of the rent in physical rent-seeking activities is limited.

AN ANALYSIS OF IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER AND ERADICATION STRATEGIES IN THE HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS OF MOROCCO AgEcon
Oldham, Elizabeth Anne; Barrett, Christopher B.; Benjelloun, Sabah; Ahanou, Brahim.
The population of the Ounein Valley in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco is at high risk of iodine deficiency. We investigated local children’s iodine deficiency and goiter patterns as well as food consumption habits through a household survey. Median urinary iodine content and goiter analysis both reflect moderate iodine deficiency. Total fish consumption has a statistically significant, positive effect on urinary iodine content. Fish consumption, like that of salt, is closely related to market access. Respondents are uniformly unaware of the dietary etiology of goiter. An effective strategy to reduce the high incidence of iodine deficiency disorder among children in the valley must attend to four crucial issues: fish consumption, salt iodization,...

Environmental Services, Externalities and Agriculture: The Case of Mountain Tourism in Morocco AgEcon
Khalil, Allali.
This study uses hedonic pricing techniques to estimate the value of agricultural amenities in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains. The analysis is limited to positive externalities related to land use, providing indicators to better inform policy decisions effecting rural and agricultural development. Advantages linked to landscape planning and its contribution to sustaining the tourism activity are documented. Amenities specific to mountain agriculture have a positive influence on the tourist accommodation rental market and particularly on farmhouses. These advantages include joint products linked to the farmhouses bordering cultivated areas, the scenery value of annual crops, the shade and attractiveness provided by walnut trees and the presence of domestic...

Dynamic Field Experiments in Development Economics: Risk Valuation in Morocco, Kenya, and Peru AgEcon
Lybbert, Travis J.; Galarza, Francisco B.; McPeak, John G.; Barrett, Christopher B.; Boucher, Stephen R.; Carter, Michael R.; Chantarat, Sommarat; Fadlaoui, Aziz; Mude, Andrew G..
The effective design and implementation of interventions that reduce vulnerability and poverty require a solid understanding of underlying poverty dynamics and associated behavioral responses. Stochastic and dynamic benefit streams can make it difficult for the poor to learn the value of such interventions to them. We explore how dynamic field experiments can help (i) intended beneficiaries to learn and understand these complicated benefit streams, and (ii) researchers to better understand how the poor respond to risk when faced with nonlinear welfare dynamics. We discuss and analyze dynamic risk valuation experiments in Morocco, Peru, and Kenya.

To review the bacteriological features of infectious spondylodiscitis and provide recommendations for the initial therapy which remains empirical in our context. Retrospective study including patients diagnosed with spondylodiscitis over a period of 4 years (2006-2009) at the Rabat Military Teaching Hospital. During the study period, we analysed 30 cases: the mean age was 49.9 years and 21 cases (70%) were male. The patients were predominantly hospitalized in neurosurgery department (15/30) followed by rheumatology department (10/30). The site of infection was lumbar in 21 cases (21/30), dorsal in 7 cases (7/30). 26 cultures were positive of which 19 (19/26) were monomicrobial. Tuberculosis (TB) was implicated in 10 cases (10/30) including 4 cases in...
