Policies Supporting Organic Food Markets in the EU: Analyses by Stakeholders in 11 European Countries AgEcon
Vairo, Daniela; Haring, Anna Maria; Dabbert, Stephan; Zanoli, Raffaele.
There is no single 'best way' of policy development. Bottom-up approaches to policy design and a broad debate among stakeholders facilitate policy learning and innovation. A novel approach of a bottom-up policy design process involving stakeholders is introduced. First results obtained by this methodology are presented. The outcomes of a large international effort for a development of policies for organic food and farming in Mai 2004 in Europe are analyzed: the synthesized results from 11 European countries (AT, CH, CZ, DE, DK, EE, GB, HU, IT, PL, SI) on the current situation of policies related to the organic food market in Europe are highlighted and policy recommendations for the development of the organic food and farming sector formulated....

Repeated Games Played in a Network AgEcon
Kinateder, Markus.
Delayed perfect monitoring in an infinitely repeated discounted game is modelled by allocating the players to a connected and undirected network. Players observe their immediate neighbors’ behavior only, but communicate over time the repeated game’s history truthfully throughout the network. The Folk Theorem extends to this setup, although for a range of discount factors strictly below 1, the set of sequential equilibria and the corresponding payoff set may be reduced. A general class of games is analyzed without imposing restrictions on the dimensionality of the payoff space. Due to this and the bilateral communication structure, truthful communication arises endogenously only under additional conditions. The model also produces a network result; namely,...

ATITUDES DE COORDENAÇÃO DE PRODUTORES RURAIS NA CADEIA DA CARNE BOVINA: O CASO DO CITE 120 AgEcon
Malafaia, Guilherme Cunha; Maciel, Alessandra Costenaro; Camargo, Maria Emilia.
The changes in the worldwide competitive scenario have posed difficulties to the survival of companies, forcing them to establish necessary cooperative relations for maintenance and survival in the markets. However, the lack of coordination and cooperation is considered a classic problem in the beef chain. Taking these assumptions into account, the purpose of the present article is to verify how the organizational network CITE 120, established by a group of beef producers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), has addressed the environmental demands in the meat production sector and how the systemic relationships for the strengthening of the network’s interests are being promoted and organized. For the purpose of this research in-depth interviews were...

Network performance - What influences it? AgEcon
Lefebvre, Virginie M.; Molnar, Adrienn; Gellynck, Xavier.
The aim of this paper is to examine the literature addressing network performance and the factors influencing it. Design – 29 papers published in 18 different journals were systematically reviewed through a multidimensional classification framework based on the strategy-structure-performance paradigm of strategic management. Findings – Based on the outputs of the literature review, a conceptual framework describing network performance is proposed. Following this framework, it is suggested that network performance is the result of the combination of network strategy, network structure and external environmental factors, and not solely the result of network structure which is characterized by five structural elements i.e. network configuration, network...

Social Networks and Supplychain Management in Rural Areas: A Case Study Focusing on Organic Olive Oil AgEcon
Medicamento, Umberto; De Gennaro, Bernardo.
In recent years, due to the growing supply of organic production, the economic performances and the competitive advantages of the farms, have become more dependent on network organisations in the supply chains. This evolution equires methodological approaches able to capture all the variables involved in the generating value processes. The network dimension of the supply chain has become a key element, and enables us to understand better the competitive performances of firms. The relationships of firms, among intangible assets, are recently considered one of the main sources of profit. So the relational capital forms the essence of the value of the firm and it is advantages on the whole coming out by occupying a specific position (role) in the network of...

Overlapping Coalitions, Bargaining and Networks AgEcon
Agbaglah, Messan; Ehlers, Lars.
This paper extends the theory of endogenous coalition formation, with complete information and transferable utility, to the overlapping case. We propose a cover function bargaining game which allows the formation of overlapping coalitions at equilibrium. We show the existence of subgame perfect equilibrium and provide an algorithm to compute this equilibrium in the symmetric case. As an application, we establish an interesting link with the formation of networks.

The Repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma in a Network AgEcon
Kinateder, Markus.
Imperfect private monitoring in an infinitely repeated discounted Prisoner’s Dilemma played on a communication network is studied. Players observe their direct neighbors’ behavior only, but communicate strategically the repeated game’s history throughout the network. The delay in receiving this information requires the players to be more patient to sustain the same level of cooperation as in a complete network, although a Folk Theorem obtains when the players are patient enough. All equilibria under exogenously imposed truth-telling extend to strategic communication, and additional ones arise due to richer communication. There are equilibria in which a player lies. The flow of information is related with network centrality measures.

REDES DE COLABORACIÓN, ESTRATEGIA EMPRESARIAL EN LA INSERCIÓN A CADENAS DE VALOR AgEcon
Arras Vota, Ana Maria; Fierro Murga, Luz Ernestina; Jaquez Balderrama, Jose Luis; Lopez Diaz, Julio Cesar.
This piece of work presents three cases: Caprica, Productores de Chihuahua and Los Porcicultores, all of which have united their efforts and created enterprises as a strategy through which the participants –small producers- generate networks to associate. This allows them the opportunity to insert in value chains and acquire better conditions for their goods, and at the same time they can give them an added value, and by doing this, they find themselves in a different state of integration and insertion in the value chain, which gives them the opportunity to face the challenges of actual life. This paper visualizes the enterprise from the systemic perspective, and as a collectivity of capabilities. Also, it presents the concept of network - individual or...

Answer to the challenges of the 21st century in the Hungarian pig sector AgEcon
Balogh, Peter; Ertsey, Imre; Szucs, Istvan.
Whether particular countries, regions within countries, and particular societies gain or lose in the process of globalization depends on where they are in the process of agricultural transformation and to what extent they can adjust? The Hungarian pork chain faces considerable disadvantages in several aspects as opposed to competing countries. In countries with developed meat chain a powerful concentration could be observed, whereas in Hungary, although disintegration has not increased, decentralization still prevails. In our research the operation of the co-operative was modelled as a generalized network problem in 2008. The model allows the quantification of the number of pigs from given farms to slaughterhouses, the maximum revenue from sales, the...

Groups, Networks, and Social Capital in the Philippine Communities AgEcon
Godquin, Marie; Quisumbing, Agnes R..
This paper explores the determinants of group membership and social networks of rural households using a unique longitudinal data set from the rural Philippines. We investigate two types of social capital: membership in groups (production, credit, burial, religious and civic groups), or “formal” social capital, and size of trust-based networks or “informal” social capital. Because men and women may have different propensities to invest in social capital, we analyze the determinants of group membership both at the household level and for men and women separately. We also disaggregate the analysis by type of group. The paper examines the determinants of the density of social capital, proxied by the number of groups and the number of network members. Finally,...

Analysis and optimization regarding the activity of a Hungarian Pig Sales and Purchase Cooperation AgEcon
Balogh, Peter; Ertsey, Imre; Fenyves, Veronika; Nagy, Lajos.
In many ways, the Hungarian pork chain faces considerable disadvantages when compared to the situation in competing countries. In countries endowed with a modern meat chain, heavy concentration is the rule, but in Hungary decentralization still prevails, although thankfully the chain is not disintegrating even further. In our research we used the operation of co-operatives as a model in terms of a generalized network problem. The model allows the quantification of the number of pigs from given farms to slaughterhouses, the maximum sales revenue, the delivery threshold prices, and an analysis of the impact co-operative members exert on sales revenues.

Small World Networks with Segregation Patterns and Brokers AgEcon
Gallo, Edoardo.
Many social networks have the following properties: (i) a short average distance between any two individuals; (ii) a high clustering coefficient; (iii) segregation patterns; the presence of (iv) brokers and (v) hubs. (i) and (ii) define a small world network. This paper develops a strategic network formation model where agents have heterogeneous knowledge of the network: cognizant agents know the whole network, while ignorant ones are less knowledgeable. For a broad range of parameters, all pairwise Nash (PN) networks have properties (i)-(iv). There are some PN networks with one hub. Cognizant agents have higher betweenness centrality: they are the brokers who connect different parts of the network. Ignorant agents cause the emergence of segregation...

Information, Stability and Dynamics in Networks under Institutional Constraints AgEcon
Olaizola, Norma; Valenciano, Federico.
In this paper we study the effects of institutional constraints on stability, efficiency and network formation. More precisely, an exogenous "societal cover" consisting of a collection of possibly overlapping subsets that covers the whole set of players and such that no set in this collection is contained in another specifies the social organization in different groups or "societies". It is assumed that a player may initiate links only with players that belong to at least one society that s/he also belongs to, thus restricting the feasible strategies and networks. In this way only the players in the possibly empty "societal core", i.e., those that belong to all societies, may initiate links with all individuals. In this setting the part of the current...

Network connectivity is shown to change in C57BL/6 mice during a continuing immune response subsequent to tetanus toxoid hyperimmunization Biol. Res.
Zivkovic,Irena P; Stojanovic,Marijana M; Petrusic,Vladimir Z; Inic-Kanada,Aleksandra B; Micic,Mileva V; Dimitrijevic,Ljiljana A.
We have already demonstrated (Stojanovic et al., 2009) a connection between tetanus toxoid (TTd) hyperimmunization and the induction of anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS) in BALB/c mice. Here we show that C57BL/6 mice subjected to an identical procedure do not exhibit any like pathology attributable to anti-phospholipid antibodies; we explain that this absence results from idiotypic connectivity. Six groups of C57BL/6 mice were hyperimmunized with TTd in aluminum hydroxide or glycerol, with or without pretreatments. Pretreated mice had been injected with polyclonal or nonspecific immune stimulators, such as complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) or glycerol. The epitope specificity of induced antibodies was tested by indirect ELISA using a tetanus toxoid immunogen...

Several strategies aim at characterizing the AIDS epidemic in different parts of the world. Among these, the identification of recent HIV-1 infections using the recently described serologic testing algorithm for recent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroconversion (STARHS) strategy was employed in four testing sites of the City of São Paulo Public Health Department (CSPPHD). Those identified as recently infected were invited to participate in a prospective clinical and laboratory evaluation study. We describe the establishment of the patient identification network and the success in enrolling the participants, as well as their clinical and laboratory characteristics. From May to December 2002, 6,443 persons were tested for HIV in the four participating...

The conservative physiology of the immune system BJMBR
Vaz,N.M.; Faria,A.M.C. de; Verdolin,B.A.; Silva Neto,A.F.; Menezes,J.S.; Carvalho,C.R..
Current immunological opinion disdains the necessity to define global interconnections between lymphocytes and regards natural autoantibodies and autoreactive T cells as intrinsically pathogenic. Immunological theories address the recognition of foreignness by independent clones of lymphocytes, not the relations among lymphocytes or between lymphocytes and the organism. However, although extremely variable in cellular/molecular composition, the immune system preserves as invariant a set of essential relations among its components and constantly enacts contacts with the organism of which it is a component. These invariant relations are reflected, for example, in the life-long stability of profiles of reactivity of immunoglobulins formed by normal organisms...
