Custom and Capital: A Financial Appraisal of Alternative Arrangements for Large-Scale Oil Palm Development on Customary Land in Sarawak, Malaysia AgEcon
Cramb, Rob A.; Ferraro, Deanna.
The oil palm boom in Southeast Asia has increased demand for institutional arrangements facilitating large-scale plantation development on customary lands. A financial model of an oil palm plantation in Sarawak, Malaysia, is used to explore six project types, including managed smallholders, three different joint-venture arrangements, renting, and (for comparison) a private plantation on state land. Benefit-cost analysis is used as basis for project, private (shareholder), and stakeholder analyses. There is a trade-off between the efficiency and equity outcomes of the alternative arrangements. While joint venture projects provide higher aggregate net benefits, managed smallholder projects provide more benefits to landholders. When the actual performance of...

The Orangutan-oil Palm Conflict: Economic Constraints and Opportunities for Conservation AgEcon
Swarna Nantha, Hemanath; Tisdell, Clement A..
The future of the orangutan (Pongo spp.) is far from secure despite the species’ high profile and media attention. The traditional threat to the orangutan has been widespread logging, but the continuing conversion of remaining habitat for oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) cultivation is hastening its extinction in the wild. This situation is driven by a robust global market for palm oil as a vegetable oil and biofuel. In tackling this conservation problem, therefore, economic factors cannot be overlooked. This article analyses these factors and how they curtail effective orangutan conservation. Of significance are the high opportunity costs of orangutan conservation and market failures associated with the public-goods nature of the orangutan’s forest habitat....

Determinants of oil palm smallholder farmers’ adaptation strategy to climate change in Bengkulu, Indonesia Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Irawan,Andi; Syakir,Muhammad.
Abstract Bengkulu is one of 10 provinces in Indonesia, which became a center of oil palm production. The aim of the study is to define how the determinant factors influence the oil palm smallholder farmer’s adaptation strategies on climate change in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. Binary logistic regression method was employed to clarify the independent variables that influence farmers’ strategy adapted to climate change. Farmer experience and their household expenditure have the positive and significant effect on cropping diversification, while oil palm price has a positive influence in using land clearing without slash and burning. The factors that most influence the farmers' adaptation to climate change are farmer’s cooperation membership and membership...

ปัจจัยต่างๆ ที่มีผลต่อการถ่ายยีนเข้าสู่ปาล์มน้ำมัน Thai Agricultural
Potjamarn Suraninpong; Supawadee Tawaro; Sompong Te-chato.
Oil palm is a highly producing oil plant. The most cultivation area is in the southern part of Thailand. Expended area of oil palm in the others part needs suitable variety. Thus, the object of this study was to improvement of oil palm via gene transfer technique. Embryogenic callus inducing from young leaves of high yield oil palm were cultured on various kinds and concentrations of antibiotics for screening of suitable concentration using for gene transformation. The result showed that hygromycin, kanamycin and phosphinotricin at 20, 200 and 5 mg/l, respectively, were suitable for transformed selection. Cefotaxime concentration at 200 mg/l was suitable for killing of agrobacterium. The study of inoculation time, co-culture time and co-culture...

Gender analysis of technology utilisation among small scale oil palm fruits processors in Ondo State, Nigeria Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Gbenga F.,Koledoye; Olanike F,Deji.
The study identified the types of improved technologies utilised, tracked gender involvement at the various stages of oil palm fruits processing activities with a view to highlighting differences in the utilisation of these technologies among male and female processors. Multistage sampling technique was used to select 240 (120 males and 120 females) oil palm fruits processors using structured interview schedule. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Gender Mapping (GM) were used to elicit qualitative data. Data collected were summarised with the aid of descriptive statistics while t-test was used to test the hypothesis. Results showed that sterilizer, digester and hydraulic hand press were utilised by both male and female processors. Results of t-test revealed...

Exploring Mechanization Degree and Capacity in Malaysia’s Oil Palm Plantations CIGR Journal
El Pebrian, Darius; Ak. Mohiddin, Dk. Norhajijah.
Development of mechanization is a crucial element in oil palm plantations in Malaysia since its significant role in reducing of highly dependence on manual workers. Nonetheless, the recent mechanization degree and capacity in oil palm plantations in this country is still rarely studied.  This study aims to determine the mechanization degree and capacity in oil palm plantations in Malaysia. Determining mechanization degree and mechanization capacity were computed based on the available secondary data from a recently survey on 4541 oil palm estates in Malaysia.  The findings showed that average mechanization degree and capacity of field operations in Malaysia’s oil palm plantations were 10.88% and 11.04%, respectively, and considered as low when compared to...

Mohidin,Hasmah; Hanafi,Mohamed Musa; Rafii,Yusop Mohd; Abdullah,Siti Nor Akmar; Idris,Abu Seman; Man,Sulaiman; Idris,Juferi; Sahebi,Mahbod.
Balanced nutrient elements in fertilizer play a critical role in oil palm seedling successful growth and development, and at the same time reduces of fertilizer losses in the environment. This study examines the effect of different levels of N, P2O5 and K2O for oil palm seedlings in solution culture on growth traits, nutrient uptake in plant tissues and biomass accumulation under nursery conditions. Five concentration levels of N (50, 100, 300, 600 and 900 mg L–1), P2O5 and K2O (15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg L–1) were used in a completely randomized design (CRD) with five replications for each. Parameters measured during the growing period include - plant height, leaf number/plant, stem diameter, SPAD chlorophyll value, and at harvest – total leaf area, root...

Validation of the sampling methodology for Opsiphanes invirae caterpillars on oil palm plantations in the Brazilian Amazon Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Taciane Almeida de; Lemos,Walkymário Paulo; Tinôco,Ricardo Salles; Barbosa,José Carlos; Martins,Ivan Carlos Fernandes.
ABSTRACT: This study validated the use of leaf 17 on the sampling of Opsiphanes invirae Hübner (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) through the quantification of caterpillar abundance on the different spirals leaves, in comparison to leaf 17, and, on the apical, intermediate and basal leaf regions. This study was performed in the state of Pará, between March-2014 and March-2015. Results confirmed that leaf 17 is the most adequate method for monitoring this defoliator pest.
