Study on Problems Faced by Xinjiang Organic Producers and Solutions AgEcon
Jun, Chai; Xia, Zhang; Jianlei, Zhang; Tong, Chen.
Presently the behavioral features of the organic producers could be concluded as the fact that they are quite confident of the prospects for organic agriculture, while heavily dependent on the guidance and support of the local governments; are in great demand for technological innovation, while in the distinguished intimacy and poor pricing capacity. Such problems as low economic benefit, the imperfect marketing network and serious external economy, are threatening the healthy development of organic agriculture in Xinjiang. In this essay, it is suggested that the government should, taking full advantage of its rich natural resources, pay great attention to the organic development in the local region; establish an efficient organic marketing network; apply...

Organic farming in Australia: An economist's perspective AgEcon
Marshall, Graham R..
Organic agriculture has emerged as an important contributor of ideas in the continuing Australian search for sustainable farming systems. Recognising this, choices arise over the need for government intervention to foster the development of organic approaches to agriculture. Even when the choice is to not intervene directly, an understanding of factors behind how voluntary conversion to this way of farming would help governments, farmer organisations and agribusiness to meet the demands of converting farmers for knowledge, inputs and services. The aim in this paper is to assist informed resolution of these questions.

Productive Efficiency in Water Usage: An Analysis of Differences among Farm Types and Sizes in Georgia AgEcon
Moore, Rebecca; Price, Joseph.
In Georgia, the price of irrigation water is equal to the cost of extraction, including pumping and diversion, storage, treatment, and delivery costs. These water-pricing conditions are repeated in locales around the world. In lieu of established water markets, water use and its efficient use are driven more by farm-level characteristics and management strategies than by the resource price. The purpose of the research presented herein is to examine what factors guide Georgia farmers’ water use decisions. Using data envelopment analysis (DEA) to calculate technical water use efficiency scores, a second step Tobit model is estimated to determine the effect of farm type and farm size. A farms’ use of conservation tillage or organic farming positively...

CONVERSION SUBSIDIES FOR ORGANIC PRODUCTION: RESULTS FROM SWEDEN AND LESSONS FOR THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Lohr, Luanne; Salomonsson, Lennart.
Environmental and social justifications for organic conversion subsidies are as pervasive in the United States as in Europe, but national policy does not explicitly support organic agriculture. Using Sweden's experience, we analyze factors that affect whether a subsidy is required to motivate organic conversion. We use a utility difference model to compare farmers who converted before and after the subsidy. Significant factors in conversion without subsidies are greater livestock diversity and more sales outlets. Farmers requiring subsidies manage larger farms, are more concerned with organic inspection quality and adequacy of technical advice, and reside in areas with more organic farms. Results suggest that a subsidy induces mainly those already...

"Organic District": identification methodology and agricultural policy objectives AgEcon
Pancino, Barbara; Franco, Silvio; Marino, Davide.
Italy, unlike other countries, has included the territorial dimension in the recent interventions and regulations of organic agriculture, introducing explicitly the concept of “organic district”. It is defined as a local productive system with a high agricultural vocation where organic production and processing practices are predominant. The main object of this new subject is to promote the diffusion of organic agriculture focusing on the productive and environmental territorial characteristic. In this poster, after a general definition of the organic districts, as they are introduced in the Italian regulations, a method for their identification in a region is proposed. In the final part, some considerations about the role of the organic district within...

Demand for Organic Food: Focus Group Discussions in Armidale, NSW AgEcon
Zepeda, Lydia; Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie).
In Australia, the retail value of organic food production was estimated at A$250 million, with farm gate value at around A$90 million, and exports at around A$40 million. The current share of organic sales in total food sales in Australia is about 1 per cent. The growth rate in organic production was forecast to continue at 10-30% per annum. Despite the positive outlook, there are concerns about consumer confusion over product recognition, organic certification, and misleading advertising. To understand how demand for organic products is changing, it is important to investigate consumer attitudes and knowledge about these issues. The objective of this study is to identify issues that may hinder or promote demand. Given the qualitative nature of these...

FACTORS OF DEVELOPMENT OF COMPETITIVENESS: THE CASE OF ORGANIC-AGRITOURISM AgEcon
Privitera, Donatella.
Many farmers, in addition to normal farming activities, have already turned to agritourism as a source of additional farm income and opportunities. There are numerous benefits to be gained from the development of agritourism: it may strengthen local economy, create job opportunities and develop and promote training and certification programs to introduce young people to agriculture and the environment. Agritourism helps preserve rural lifestyles and landscape and offers the opportunity to provide "sustainable" tourism. Organic agriculture is due to demand for healthy foods with a high quality standard and limited use of chemical substances. Organic agriculture is closely connected to agritourism and tourism. The purpose of this paper is to identify and...

Variation in Organic Standards Prior to the National Organic Program AgEcon
Fetter, T. Robert; Caswell, Julie A..
Interest in establishing nationally uniform certification, labeling, and management standards for organic products grew out of concern that the existence of multiple standards led to consumer and supply chain confusion about, and lack of confidence in, these products. The National Organic Program Final Rule, issued in December 2000, is the result of this interest. We analyze the certification system that was in place prior to the new national rule to evaluate the extent of differences between certification standards and how the national rule is likely to impact the market for organic products. Our analysis suggests that most differences among US certification standards were minor. Also, the most important impacts of the national standard may be in...

EL CONSUMIDOR DE FRUTAS Y VERDURAS ECOLÓGICAS: HOMO EST TEMPERATUS AgEcon
Meneses, Gonzalo Dias; Rodriguez, Julia Nieves; Martel, Manuel Lopes.
The aim of this work is to analyze the model of consumer involvement with organic fruits and vegetables. An empirical survey was carried out using a 371 sample size questionnaire, which allowed for both path and multigroups analysis to be done. Based on the results obtained, we can affirm that the level of motivation to consume organic fruits and vegetables is intermediate, as the predominant motives are safety and self-realisation, and the volition model follows an inverse theoretical learning process. Furthermore, there is more than one model, since both gender and income influence significantly the involvement with organic food. Contradicting the predominant theoretical paradigm, this work tries to develop practical implications for organic food...

Emerging Issues in the U.S. Organic Industry AgEcon
Greene, Catherine R.; Dimitri, Carolyn; Lin, Biing-Hwan; McBride, William D.; Oberholtzer, Lydia; Smith, Travis A..
Consumer demand for organic products has widened over the last decade. While new producers have emerged to help meet demand, market participants report that a supply squeeze is constraining growth for both individual firms and the organic sector overall. Partly in response to shortages in organic supply, Congress in 2008 included provisions in the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act (2008 Farm Act) that, for the first time, provide financial support to farmers to convert to organic production. This report examines recent economic research on the adoption of organic farming systems, organic production costs and returns, and market conditions to gain a better understanding of the organic supply squeeze and other emerging issues in this rapidly changing...

The U.S. Organic Handling Sector in 2004: Baseline Findings of the Nationwide Survey of Organic Manufacturers, Processors, and Distributors AgEcon
Dimitri, Carolyn; Oberholtzer, Lydia.
The organic sector has expanded rapidly over the last decade, as retail sales of organic food increased to $15.7 billion in 2006. As sales have grown, so have the number and types of outlets selling organic products. USDA’s Economic Research Service surveyed certified organic intermediaries in the United States to collect information on basic characteristics of the sector in 2004, as well as its marketing and procurement practices. This report uses the survey findings to present a baseline view of the organic handling sector. A large share of organic handlers are mixed operations that handle both organic and conventional products, and most began as conventional firms that converted to handling organic products. Most organic products are sold domestically,...

Ökologischer Landbau in Nordrhein-Westfalen: Empirische Analyse und Bestimmungsgründe der heterogenen räumlichen Verteilung AgEcon
Haas, Guido.
In North-Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the most populated German state (18 million people), 2.6% of the agricultural area is farmed organically (as of 1.1.2002). Using data derived from the NRW statistical office, the statewide extension agencies and organic farmers’ organisations, the geographical distribution of the organic farms was investigated by correlating general conditions and the economic and natural environment. The organically farmed area varied widely - from 0.1 to 7.5% of total agricultural area - over the 34 administrative districts of NRW. The focus of this study is an analysis of the agricultural structure to understand the heterogeneous distribution of organic farms in NRW. In certain parts of NRW, highly specialised intensive farming creates a...

Exploring the organic agriculture practice in Mexico: an opportunity for small-scale farmers to feed themselves AgEcon
Juarez Hernandez, Isabel; Hernandez Cervantes, Tania.
We examine how organic farming practiced by small farmers in rural zones in Mexico could build a self-sufficient food system. We hold the hypothesis that the promotion of the local consumption of organic produce is an alternative to strengthen the local economy needed to sustain food self-sufficiency. The hypothesis stands against export oriented market and high external input technology of industrial agriculture that erodes small-scale farmers’ ability for self-sufficient food. Firstly, a debate about how organic farming systems promote local economies is presented, drawing on sustainable agriculture approach. Organic agriculture seems to be a suitable alternative for small-scale farmers because it allegedly diminishes financial vulnerabilities since they...

Organic Agriculture: An Agrarian or Industrial Revolution? AgEcon
Dimitri, Carolyn.
The notion of industrialized agriculture has been a dominant theme in the applied economics literature. More recently, the debate has entered the realm of organic agriculture, with some suggesting that the organic sector has strayed from its agrarian roots. The terms “industrial” and “agrarian” are widely used, yet few have given precise definitions of what the terms mean. This paper puts forth testable hypotheses for agrarian and industrial agriculture. Then, using census data from the 2008 Organic Production Survey, we examine the evidence to assess whether the organic farm sector fits an agrarian or industrial model. Overall the evidence is mixed, yet suggests that the organic sector is less agrarian than expected.

Sustainability of Organic, Integrated and Conventional Farming Systems in Tuscany AgEcon
Pacini, Cesare; Giesen, G.W.J.; Vazzana, V.; Wossink, Ada.
Agricultural researchers widely recognise the importance of sustainable agricultural production systems and the need to develop appropriate methods to measure sustainability. The principal purpose of this paper is to evaluate the financial and environmental aspects of sustainability of Organic, Integrated and Conventional Farming Systems (OFS, IFS, and CFS, respectively) at farm and more detailed spatial scales. This is achieved applying an integrated economic-environmental accounting framework to three case study farms in Tuscany including different farming systems and different spatial scales. The environmental performances of the FS were measured through the application of an Environmental Accounting Information Systems (EAIS) at field, site and farm...

Revenue Protection for Organic Producers: Too Much or Too Little AgEcon
Singerman, Ariel; Hart, Chad E.; Lence, Sergio H..
A framework is developed to examine organic crop insurance established by the Risk Management Agency (RMA). Given that RMA links organic and conventional crop prices, the model is calibrated to reflect both markets to illustrate the impacts that pricing has on insurance coverage. Findings indicate that at the 75% coverage level, RMA's fixed price factor implies an effective coverage ranging from 45% to 106% depending on the ratio of planting-time organic to conventional market prices. Results suggest RMA's program is likely to induce adverse selection, because the nominal coverage level is likely to substantially deviate from the effective coverage.
