Hybridization among wild passionflower species Rev. Bras. Bot.
Conceição,Léo Duc Haa Carson Schwartzhaupt da; Souza,Margarete Magalhães; Belo,Gabriela de Oliveira; Santos,Sheila Félix dos; Freitas,Jôsie Cloviane Oliveira de.
(Hybridization among wild passionflower species). Passion fruits are appreciated for their ornamental value, since their flowers are showy and display a wide variety of colors. In addition, many hybrids have been produced and used in other countries. The genotypes used in selection of plants with ornamental characteristics are hybrid progenies which are used in various crossing strategies. Thus, the aim of this work was to obtain interspecific hybrids, perform backcrossing and obtain progenies from crossings between hybrids, and to determine the reproductive compatibility between the progenitors involved. The percentage of fertilized flowers, germination, and the number of fruits, seeds and plants obtained through crossing were recorded. A series of 374...

Phosphorus-Zinc Interaction and Iron and Manganese Uptake in the Growth and Nutrition of Phalaenopsis (Orchidaceae) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Novais,Sarah Vieira; Novais,Roberto Ferreira; V.,Víctor Hugo Alvarez; Villani,Ecila Mercês de Albuquerque; Zenero,Mariana Delgado Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Visual symptoms of Zn deficiency, induced by excessive P applications, have been observed in commercial orchid nurseries. The supply of other metallic micronutrients, such as Fe and Mn, may also be inadequate in the plant due to high application rates of P. The aim of this study was to investigate this interaction in the nutrition of Phalaenopsis plants. Experimental treatments consisted of three P rates (0.0, 0.5, and 1.0 g L-1) and three Zn rates (0.00, 0.35, and 0.70 g L-1), as well as fertilization with other basic nutrients, and a control treatment with the fertilizer B&G Orchidée(r), at 1.0 g L-1. Dry matter production was evaluated, as well as the levels of P, Zn, Fe, and Mn in both shoots and roots. Higher P rates induced higher shoot...

Neves,Antônia L. R.; Lacerda,Claudivan F. de; Oliveira,Adriana C. de; Sousa,Carlos H. C.; Oliveira,Francisco I. F.; Ribeiro,Maria da S. de S..
ABSTRACT The development of agriculture in the northeastern semi-arid region depends, at least in part, on the correct exploitation and efficient use of natural resources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the use of saline water on morphophysiological responses and sensory analysis of ‘Boa noite’ plants (Catharanthus roseus) in soil fertilized with bovine biofertilizer. A completely randomized design was used in the split plot arrangement, the plots being formed by the five irrigation water salinity levels (0.5, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10 dS m-1), and the subplots by two frequencies of application of the 150 mL pot-1 of liquid bovine biofertilizer (divided into one and five times), with five replicates. The analysed variables were: leaf...

Soil water content and wood ash fertilization on the cultivation of gladiolus AGRIAMBI
Pereira,Marcel T. J.; Silva,Tonny J. A. da; Bonfim-Silva,Edna M..
ABSTRACT Irrigation management, associated with the management of fertilization through the use of waste from plant material burning, has proven to be a sustainable strategy to increase the production of ornamental plants in greenhouses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the development of gladiolus subjected to soil water contents and wood ash fertilization in a Cerrado Oxisol. The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions from April to September 2014, in a randomized block design, arranged in a 5 x 5 factorial, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of five water contents (7, 14, 21, 28, and 35%) and five doses of wood ash (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 g dm-3). Irrigation management was carried out using the portable probe Diviner...

Bezerra,Francisco Mardones Servulo; Lacerda,Claudivan Feitosa de; Ruppenthal,Viviane; Cavalcante,Eduardo Santos; Oliveira,Adriana Cruz de.
ABSTRACT The guarantee of water supply for irrigated agriculture in the semi-arid region must necessarily involve the use of lower quality water, such as brackish water. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the tolerance to salinity of the ornamental species Catharanthus roseus, Tagetes patula and Celosia argentea, using different methods. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block, arranged in a 10 x 3 factorial scheme, corresponding to 10 saline concentrations of irrigation water (ECw 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5; 3.0; 3.5; 4.0; 5.0 and 6.0 dS m-1) and 3 ornamental species. Four salinity tolerance assessment methods were tested, using relative values or percentages of reduction in quantitative and qualitative analyses. The different...

Aphididae (Hemiptera) on ornamental plants in Córdoba (Argentina) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Szpeiner,Alfonsina.
In 30 surveys across Cordoba city and surroundings (Argentina) I recorded, from November 2001 to May 2002, a total of 109 ornamental plants infested with aphid colonies. Surveys were conducted in the local botanical garden as well as homestead gardens and nurseries. Seventeen species of aphids were identified, 4 of which are new species in the area, from 47 ornamental plants. In a total of 59 plant/aphid associations, 38 new associations were found. I present the first record of aphids colonizing Cactaceae in Argentina. Most aphid colonies were medium and a high proportion (more than 40%) showed alate individuals. The most frequent aphid species, Aphis gossypii Glover and Aphis craccivora Koch were especially associated with the most frequent damages:...

Urban ethnobotany: a case study in neighborhoods of different ages in Chapecó, Santa Catarina State Acta Botanica
Pradeiczuk,Aline; Eichemberg,Mayra Teruya; Kissmann,Camila.
ABSTRACT The study of urban home gardens is still a current gap in knowledge in Brazilian ethnobotany researches, especially in the south of Brazil. This study was carried out to survey the species composition of plants in urban residential home gardens of two neighborhoods in the municipality of Chapecó (state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil): an older neighborhood created prior to the 1950s, and a younger neighborhood created in the decade 1970-1980. It was hypothesized that the home gardens in the older neighborhood would be larger and have greater species richness than those in the younger neighborhood. Data from 10 home gardens in each neighborhood were collected through semi-structured interviews. The plants cited by interviewees were classified...

Interaction between sucrose and pH during in vitro culture of Nephrolepis biserrata (Sw.) Schott (Pteridophyta) Acta Botanica
Ambrósio,Sandra Tereza; Melo,Natoniel Franklin de.
The present work reports the effect of different pH and sucrose concentrations on in vitro propagation of Nephrolepis biserrata. Fronds aseptically obtained from stolon segment culture were cultivated in MS semi-solid medium supplemented with 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60g.L-1 sucrose and pH adjusted to 3, 5, 7 and 9, in a factorial design. Frond number and length, pinnae number, raquis length and diameter, fresh and dry matter weight were measured. Inhibition of shoot and leaf regeneration was observed in all the pH treatments in the absence of sucrose. On the other hand, when sucrose was added to the medium, the shoot number increased, reaching the maximum average values of 51.25 and 38.25 shoot per explant at pH 5 and 7, respectively. Sucrose concentrations from...

Bromeliad ornamental species: conservation issues and challenges related to commercialization - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i1.7314 Biological Sciences
Negrelle, Raquel Rejane Bonato; Universidade Federal do Paraná - UFPR; Anacleto, Adilson; Faculdade do Litoral Paranaense; Mitchell, Darcy; Royal Roads University.
Bromeliads grow almost exclusively in the New World tropics and subtropics, mainly in South America in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (ca. 1200 species). Within the last few decades, their beautiful shapes and colors, low maintenance and easy adaptability to small gardens have brought bromeliads into worldwide use as ornamental plants. While the ornamental bromeliad trade could make significant contributions to household economies in rural areas, the trade may represent a significant threat in some of the bromeliad biodiversity hotspot countries such as Brazil, Bolivia and Colombia. This paper presents an overview of production volumes, analysis of the Brazilian bromeliads trade chain – at the state, national and international levels – and recommendations...
