Dell'Arciprete, O.P.; Christiansen, H.E.; Diaz de Astarloa, J.M..
The present paper deals with the study of the reproductive cycle of the sea-bass (Acanthistius brasilianus). Its main objective is getting some advance in the inderstanding of the gonad cycle of the sea-bass and the comprehension of its mode of reproduction. The study is emphasized on tahe females because it is thought that they permit a better analysis in this first stage of the reseach work. Some basic aspects, such as the anatomical and the histological description of the gonadas, the study of ovocyte maturation phases and the development of ovary maturity scales were into account. The gonad cycle was analized throughout the year by means of different approaches; histological analysis of ovary preparation and by following the statistical structure of...

Some biochemical aspects of reproduction in female trachinotus ovatus (carangidae) OceanDocs
Kaldus, S.K.; El-Serafy, S.S.; Assem, S.S.; El-Garabawy, M.M.; El-Absawy, M. El-G..
General pattern of gonadal development in female Trachinotus ovatus was divided into six maturity stages, which are; immature, maturing, nearly ripe, ripe, spawning and spent stages. The maximum value of gonadosomatic index (GSI) was attained in June and July. Total protein content in ovaries varied according to different maturity stages recording maximum value at immature ovaries and minimum at spawning and spent ovaries. The values of GSI in ovaries were inversely correlated to their total protein content at different maturity stages. Seven amino acids (proline, alanine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine and histidine) were found to increase significantly in ripe ovary, followed by a significant decrease in both spawning and completely spent...

Features of the reproductive biology of the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis). OceanDocs
Macchi, G.J.; Pájaro, M..
Different features of the reproductive biology of the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) are analyzed. Samples were obtained from research cruises and from commercial catches carried out between March-November 1995, in waters near Malvinas Islands. Reproductive activity of M. australis was observed between the end of July and September, southwest of Malvinas Islands. Oocyte diameter distribution of gravid females and the histological observations show that this species is a batch spawner with determinate annual fecundity. Preliminary estimate of the potential annual fecundity was about 478,000 oocytes for a 51-cm mean total length. Size at first maturity for this species was about 31 cm total length.

Fecundidad parcial y frecuencia reproductiva del efectivo patagónico de merluza (Merluccius hubbsi) OceanDocs
Pájaro, M.; Macchi, G.J.; Ehrlich, M.D..
Batch fecundity and spawning frequency of Argentine hake inhabiting Patagonian waters south of 41° S were estimated using monthly samples collected during the December 2000-March 2001 reproductive season and at the end of the March 2002 spawning period. Batch fecundity was fitted to a power function of total length and a linear function of ovary-free female weight with values ranging between 100,000 (32 cm total length) and 2,300,000 (87 cm total length) hydrated oocytes. Batch and relative fecundity showed variations during the spawning season with a marked decrease towards the end of the reproductive period (March). The spawning frequency, which ranged between 0.10 and 0.15, was estimated from the proportion of females with day-1 postovulatory follicles...

Fecundidad y frecuencia reproductiva de las poblaciones bonaerense y patagónica de anchoíta Argentina Engraulis anchoita. OceanDocs
Pájaro, M.; Macchi, G.J.; Sánchez, R.P..
Fecundity and spawning frequency were estimated in the northern(off Buenos Aires Province)and southern (patagonian)argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita populations in 1993, during the peak of the spawning season. Relative fecundity, expressed as eggs per ovary-free weight was 574±21 (CI 95. ) and 605±49 (CI 95. ) in the northern and southern populations. The difference was not statistically significant between stocks (P0.13). Relative fecundity was higher in anchovies larger than 130 mm. The mean batch fecundity for the northern and southern populations was 13675±856 (CI 95. ) and21677±2.753 (CI 95. ) respectively. Batch fecundity (F)expressed as alinear function of ovary-free weight (W)was: F=-1310+649 * W(northern), F=-5935+786 * W (southern). The daily...

Reproducción de la corvina rubia Micropogonias furnieri del sector rioplatense. Su relación con los gradientes horizontales de salinidad. OceanDocs
Macchi, G.J..
Reproduction of white croaker collected during 1991-1993 in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (CFZ)(34°-39°30'S), was studied by means of histological analysis of ovaries. Areal and seasonal maturity stage distributions were compared; ripeness degree was correlated to horizontal salinity gradients. During June and July an overall predominance of the resting stage was observed; nevertheless, a high proportion of females in early maturation was detected near Cabo San Antonio and Punta Piedras. In late October-early November an increase of maturing individuals was observed. Females in advanced maturity stage and partially spent, with postovulatory follicles, were collected mainly in estuarine waters with wide bottom salinity ranges (between 9-25...

Talla de primera madurez del abadejo (Genypterus blacodes) en el Atlántico Sudoccidental. OceanDocs
Cordo, H.D.; Machinandiarena, L.; Macchi, G.J.; Villarino, M.F..
The length at first maturity (Lm50. ) and the maturity ogive are very important parameters in stock assessment. In this paper the ling Genypterus blacodes females Lm50. is estimated with frequencies of mature fish determined by microscope diagnosis of ovaries collected during the spawning season (SW Atlantic). The Lm50. of ling was estimated at 70.5 cm of total length (TL), which corresponds to an age of 4.5 years. The maturity process occurs between 63 and 78 cm TL (between 3.7 and 5.4 years).

Variations in lipid classes and fatty acid content in tissues of wild <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> (de Man) females during maturation OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Tamtin, M.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This study describes the variations in total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids in the midgut gland (MG), ovary, and muscle tissue of wild-caught <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> to elucidate the importance of these components during sexual maturation. Mature females were captured in the Mae Klong River, Thailand, from July to September 1998, and divided into five groups according to their ovarian development. Total lipid levels in the ovary increased with maturation, but no concomitant decrease in MG lipids was observed. Thus, the lipid requirements of the developing ovary are thought to be more dependent on the immediate ingestion of dietary lipid than on MG reserves. Higher proportions of neutral lipids (NL), mainly triacylglycerols (TG),...

VIANA,JOÃO HENRIQUE MOREIRA; FERREIRA,ADEMIR DE MORAES; SÁ,WANDERLEI FERREIRA DE; CAMARGO,LUIZ SÉRGIO DE ALMEIDA.
The aim of this study was to investigate the follicular dynamics during estrous cycle in Gir breed (Bos indicus) cows. Follicular growth and atresia during estrous cycle were evaluated using a portable ultrasound device. Luteal activity was evaluated by serum progesterone levels. Cycles with two (6.67%), three (60.00%), four (26.67%) and five (6.67%) follicular waves were observed. There was no difference (P>0.05) in dominant or subordinate follicles growth or atresia rates among follicular waves. The maximum diameter of the ovulatory follicle was higher than the diameter of the other dominant follicles in cycles with four waves, and higher than the diameter of the second dominant follicle in cycles with three waves (P<0.05). There was no difference...

The Differential Expression and Snp Analysis of the Ovoinhibitor Gene in the Ovaries of Laying Duck Breeds (Anas Platyrhynchos) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Wu,Y; Liang,H; Zhang,H; Pi,JS; Pan,AL; Shen,J; Pu,YJ; Du,JP.
ABSTRACT Ovoinhibitor (OIH) is the main proteinase inhibitor in the egg white. In the present study, real-time quantitative PCR and Western-Blot were used to analyze different expression pattern of OIH in ovaries as a candidate gene of reproductive traits in Jingjiang ducks (JJ ducks) and Shaoxing ducks (SX ducks) during three laying stages. To study the polymorphism of the OIH gene in those two duck populations, we designed five pairs of primers to detect SNPs of exon 3-5, 5-6, 14-16 and intron 7, 9 of the OIH gene by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and DNA pool sequencing methods. The results showed that OIH expression increased during the laying stage in the ovaries of both duck breeds. The relative...

GOSSYPOL PROMOTES THE DEGENERATION OF CHICKEN OVARIAN FOLLICLES IN VITRO Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Gadelha,ICN; Lima,MA; Melo,MM; Soto-Blanco,B.
ABSTRACT Gossypol, a phenolic compound produced by the pigment glands of cotton, is known to affect male reproduction. In females, exposure to gossypol has been associated with interference with the estrous cycle and embryo development. In laying hens fed cottonseed, gossypol was found to reduce egg production and weight and to cause discoloration of the egg yolk and/or albumen. It is probable that gossypol directly affects ovarian follicles, but this has not been confirmed experimentally yet. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine if gossypol affected cultivated ovarian follicles of the chicken. Ovarian follicles of adult female chickens were cultivated with different concentrations of gossypol (0, 5, 10 and 20 μg/mL) and classified according...

Morphology of female reproductive tract of the predator Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) fed on different diets BABT
Lemos,Walkymário de Paulo; Ramalho,Francisco de Souza; Serrão,José Eduardo; Zanuncio,José Cola.
The morphology of the reproductive tract of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) females fed with Alabama argillacea (Hübner) larvae, artificial diet, Tenebrio molitor L. larvae or Musca domestica L. larvae were studied. The reproductive tract of females of this species presented yellow coloration and independent of the diet, each ovary had seven ovarioles joined through terminal filaments and forming a bunch shape structure. The histological data revealed that the ovary of P. nigrispinus was of meroistic telotrophic type, with each individual ovariole divided in a terminal filament, a tropharium (trophic chamber), a vitellarium, and a pedicel. The prey type affected the development and morphometry of these structures. Females of P. nigrispinus fed with 3rd or 5th...
