General pattern of gonadal development in female Trachinotus ovatus was divided into six maturity stages, which are; immature, maturing, nearly ripe, ripe, spawning and spent stages. The maximum value of gonadosomatic index (GSI) was attained in June and July. Total protein content in ovaries varied according to different maturity stages recording maximum value at immature ovaries and minimum at spawning and spent ovaries. The values of GSI in ovaries were inversely correlated to their total protein content at different maturity stages. Seven amino acids (proline, alanine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine and histidine) were found to increase significantly in ripe ovary, followed by a significant decrease in both spawning and completely spent... |

Batch fecundity and spawning frequency of Argentine hake inhabiting Patagonian waters south of 41° S were estimated using monthly samples collected during the December 2000-March 2001 reproductive season and at the end of the March 2002 spawning period. Batch fecundity was fitted to a power function of total length and a linear function of ovary-free female weight with values ranging between 100,000 (32 cm total length) and 2,300,000 (87 cm total length) hydrated oocytes. Batch and relative fecundity showed variations during the spawning season with a marked decrease towards the end of the reproductive period (March). The spawning frequency, which ranged between 0.10 and 0.15, was estimated from the proportion of females with day-1 postovulatory follicles... |

This study describes the variations in total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids in the midgut gland (MG), ovary, and muscle tissue of wild-caught <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> to elucidate the importance of these components during sexual maturation. Mature females were captured in the Mae Klong River, Thailand, from July to September 1998, and divided into five groups according to their ovarian development. Total lipid levels in the ovary increased with maturation, but no concomitant decrease in MG lipids was observed. Thus, the lipid requirements of the developing ovary are thought to be more dependent on the immediate ingestion of dietary lipid than on MG reserves. Higher proportions of neutral lipids (NL), mainly triacylglycerols (TG),... |

ABSTRACT Ovoinhibitor (OIH) is the main proteinase inhibitor in the egg white. In the present study, real-time quantitative PCR and Western-Blot were used to analyze different expression pattern of OIH in ovaries as a candidate gene of reproductive traits in Jingjiang ducks (JJ ducks) and Shaoxing ducks (SX ducks) during three laying stages. To study the polymorphism of the OIH gene in those two duck populations, we designed five pairs of primers to detect SNPs of exon 3-5, 5-6, 14-16 and intron 7, 9 of the OIH gene by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and DNA pool sequencing methods. The results showed that OIH expression increased during the laying stage in the ovaries of both duck breeds. The relative... |

ABSTRACT Gossypol, a phenolic compound produced by the pigment glands of cotton, is known to affect male reproduction. In females, exposure to gossypol has been associated with interference with the estrous cycle and embryo development. In laying hens fed cottonseed, gossypol was found to reduce egg production and weight and to cause discoloration of the egg yolk and/or albumen. It is probable that gossypol directly affects ovarian follicles, but this has not been confirmed experimentally yet. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine if gossypol affected cultivated ovarian follicles of the chicken. Ovarian follicles of adult female chickens were cultivated with different concentrations of gossypol (0, 5, 10 and 20 μg/mL) and classified according... |

The morphology of the reproductive tract of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) females fed with Alabama argillacea (Hübner) larvae, artificial diet, Tenebrio molitor L. larvae or Musca domestica L. larvae were studied. The reproductive tract of females of this species presented yellow coloration and independent of the diet, each ovary had seven ovarioles joined through terminal filaments and forming a bunch shape structure. The histological data revealed that the ovary of P. nigrispinus was of meroistic telotrophic type, with each individual ovariole divided in a terminal filament, a tropharium (trophic chamber), a vitellarium, and a pedicel. The prey type affected the development and morphometry of these structures. Females of P. nigrispinus fed with 3rd or 5th... |
