ABSTRACT The palynological diversity of Blechnaceae in the Atlantic Forest was investigated. While the monophyletic family belongs to the group of leptosporangiate ferns, a new classification proposed by recent phylogenetic study reorganizes the family and adds new genera. To expand palynological knowledge of the group, the spore morphology of 23 species and a hybrid, distributed among 10 genera, was described. Material from herbarium collections were submitted to acetolysis and mounted on slides, with subsequent statistical analysis of spore measurements. Photomicrographs of the material were taken under both light and scanning electron microscopy. Perine ornamentation varied among psilate, rugulate and scabrate; granules and gemmae were present along... |

The genus Centaurea L. is one of the largest genera in the family Asteraceae. The number of taxa included in this genus ranges from 500 to 600 worldwide. Iran is one of the major centers of diversity for this genus. Pollen morphology has proved useful in the systematics of Asteraceae, as well as in that of some of its genera and species. The pollen morphology of 19 taxa of the genus Centaurea was investigated in detail by light and scanning electron microscopy. Examination under light microscopy showed pollen grains to be tricolporate, isopolar, radially symmetrical, oblate spheroidal, prolate spheroidal, subprolate, tectum perforate and scabrate. Based on the exine ornamentation observed under scanning electron microscopy, we identified two types of... |

ABSTRACT This study aims to expand knowledge of the pollen morphology of Passifloraceae and contribute to the taxonomic delimitation of the group by morphologically characterizing pollen grains of species that occur in the Brazilian state of Bahia. Thirty-six species occur in the state, one of the genus Mitostemma (M. glaziovii) and 35 of the genus Passiflora. Pollen samples were acetolysed, measured, and described using light and scanning electron microscopy. The results group the studied species into four pollen types based mainly on aperture type and number, opercular variation, and the presence/absence of ornamentation elements inside the lumina of the reticulum: Pollen type I - species belonging to the subgenera Astrophea and Deidamioides; pollen type... |

A pollen morphology study of the Gentianaceae Juss. of Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke (Manaus, Brazil) was performed. The pollen grains of the studied species varied morphologically in their pollen units (tetrads or monads), size (small, medium and large), shape (oblate, suboblate, oblate spheroidal, spheroidal, prolate spheroidal and prolate), polarity (heteropolar, isopolar or subisopolar), symmetry (bilateral or radial) and number and type of aperture (3-colporate and 1-3porate). In relation to ornamentation, pollen grains had a sexine that was psilate in the Voyria species, microreticulate in Voyriella parviflora and reticulate heterobrochate in Tachia grandiflora and Irlbachia alata. The exine in I. alata showed great variability in the size and... |

We analyzed the pollen grains of 30 taxa of the genus Bauhinia L., within five series: Aculeatae (9 species); Acuminatae (1 species); Cansenia (17 species); Pentandrae (2 species); and Perlebia (1 species). The pollen grains were acetolysed, after which they were photographed and analyzed under light microscopy. Non-acetolysed pollen grains were analyzed under scanning electronic microscopy. Characters such as shape, size, exine and aperture constitution were studied. The species were separated by a dichotomous key, which showed pollen grains that were classified as very large; isopolar or apolar; oblate, suboblate, oblate spheroidal or spherical; large or small in terms of the polar area; inaperturate, 3-porate or (3-7)-colpate; and microreticulate or... |

ABSTRACT Propolis is a resin-like substance composed mainly of resin, wax, essential oils, pollen grains and specific plant parts collected by the honeybee Apis mellifera, which mixes them with fluids they secrete. The components and chemical properties of propolis vary among regions. Therefore, in order assess variation in the botanical composition of propolis, 26 samples of propolis (brown, red, and green) produced throughout northeastern Brazil were analyzed by acetolysis specifically adapted for propolis. In total, 196 pollen types were recorded, representing 123 genera and 47 families, with types of Fabaceae and Rubiaceae being present in 100 % of the samples. Fabaceae was the richest group with 49 pollen types, followed by Malvaceae (10 types),... |

ABSTRACT Based on molecular data, the tribe Chironieae (Gentianaceae) is divided into three subtribes. This study aims to describe the pollen morphology of representatives of two of the three subtribes that occur in the Atlantic Forest in order to contribute to a better understanding of the palynology of these taxa and to clarify the taxonomy of the family: subtribe Chironiinae (Centaurium erythraea and Zygostigma australe) and subtribe Coutoubeinae (Coutoubea ramosa, C. spicata, Deianira chiquitiana, D. damazioi, D. erubescens, D. nervosa and D. pallescens). Botanical material was obtained from exsicates and treated by acetolysis for light microscopy. Pollen grains were measured and photomicrographed, and the results statistically analyzed. For SEM study,... |

Palynological analysis of the Chigua and Malimán formations of Devonian and Early Carboniferous age respectively, cropping out in the Río Blanco Basin, northwestern Argentina, has yielded diverse paleomicroplankton-spore assemblages. In this first part, 35 species of paleomicroplankton and 68 species of acavate spores from both formations are illustrated. Two new species are proposed: Apiculiretusispora laxa from the Devonian, and Pustulatisporites malimanensis from the Early Carboniferous. Two new combinations are proposed: the spore species Apiculatisporis castanea (Butterworth and Williams) nov. comb., and the paleomicroplankton species, Dictyotidium munificum (Wicander and Wood) nov. comb., based on the discussion of the main characters of the genera... |

Well preserved Mississippian palynological assemblages have been obtained from the Cortaderas Formation in the Río Blanco Basin, northwestern Argentina. In this second contribution, twenty- eight from a total of seventy-eight spore species are described. A new species of trilete spores is proposed: Densosporites scalabrinii sp. nov. Worldwide geographic and stratigraphic records of taxa are analysed. The Cortaderas Formation is dated as late Viséan in age based on the presence of species of potential stratigraphic relevance, such as Reticulatisporites magnidictyus Playford and Helby, Verrucosisporites quasigobbettii Playford and Helby and Rugospora australiensis (Playford and Helby) Jones and Truswell and the absence of pollen grains. The samples collected... |
