New record of Pterotaenia fasciata (Wiedemann) (Diptera, Ulidiidae) in Brazil, a probably mechanical vector of enteric bacteria Rev. Bras. entomol.
Barnabe,Anderson Sena; Laporta,Gabriel Zorello; Laporta,Marcia Zorello; Lamas,Carlos José Einicker.
Pterotaenia fasciata is commonly recorded in rural areas in Argentina, but during a Diptera survey study developed in a reservoir which retains storm water from polluted canals in an urban area of Taboão da Serra municipality, SP, Brazil, we could capture P. fasciata adults. Enteric bacteria Escherichia coli T. Escherich, 1885 and Proteus sp. were isolated from P. fasciata collected in traps inside the reservoir and around it. Fecal coliforms and E. coli were found in the water of the reservoir. These records suggest that a high abundance of this species at urban areas with inadequate sewage canals should reveal these muscoid dipterans as mechanical vectors of enteric bacteria.

Cestodes in South American freshwater teleost fishes: keys to genera and brief description of species Zoologia
Rego,Amilcar Arandas; Chubb,James C; Pavanelli,Gilberto C.
Keys to genera of cestodes in South American freshwater teleost fishes are provided, with diagnoses of genera and short descriptions of species. Two new genera are proposed, Chambriella gen.n. for Goezeella agostinhoi Pavanelli & Santos, 1992 and G paranaensis Pavanelli & Rego, 1989, and Brooksiella gen.n. for Amphoteromorphus praeputialis Rego, Santos & Silva, 1974. Nomimoscolex magna Rego, Santos & Silva, 1974, previously species inquirenda, is transferred to the genus Proteocephalus Weinland, 1858. Goezeella nupeliensis Pavanelli & Rego, 1989 is considered a species inquirenda. Species and host lists are included.

Occurrence of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus (Railliet, 1898) larvae (Nematoda: Metastrongylidae) infecting Achatina (Lissachatina) fulica Bowdich, 1822 (Mollusca: Gastropoda) in the Amazon region Acta Amazonica
Andrade-Porto,Sanny Maria de; Souza,Kelly Cristina Pereira de; Cárdenas,Melissa Querido; Roque,Rosemary A.; Pimpão,Daniel Mansur; Araújo,Cleusa Suzana; Malta,José Celso de Oliveira.
Achatina fulica or "giant African snail" is an exotic species, considered to be one of the world's hundred most invasive species, causing serious environmental damages. In the present study we report, for the first time, the occurrence of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infecting A.fulica in the Amazon region. This nematode is described parasitizing mainly the pulmonary system of felines, which causes "aelurostrongilose", also known as feline cardio-pulmonary strongyloidosis. New morphometric data of third stage larvae are presented herein. The present study demonstrated that 40% of all the snails were infected by A. abstrusus. Achatina fulica specimens were collected from three different areas in Manaus namely: rural; east and west areas. The east area...

Seasonality of nematode larvae in Iguanodectes spilurus (Characidae) an ornamental fish from northeastern Para, Brazil Acta Amazonica
Fujimoto,Rodrigo Yudi; Anjos,Ellem Cristina Silva dos; Ramos,Fabrício Menezes; Martins,Maurício Laterça.
The current study presents a parasitological survey of larval nematodes from freshwater ornamental fish Iguanodectes spilurus caught in the watercourse of the Caete River, in the northeast region of the State of Para, Brazil. A total of 176 specimens, 1.36±0.75 g weight and 5.53±0.98 cm total length, were analyzed. Nematode larvae were identified as Capillaria sp., Procamallanus sp. and Anisakidae, with prevalence of 70.45% and infection intensity ranging from 1.81 to 4.70 larvae. The highest prevalence 57.38% occurred in the liver, but no seasonality was observed, indicating high infection throughout the year. Seasonality was observed in fish parasitized in the stomach, intestine and caecum, with prevalence and mean intensity of 17.61% and 2.32 parasites,...

Cytological and molecular detection of Leishmania spp. in different biological tissues of dogs in areas endemic for visceral leishmaniasis Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dias,A.F.L.R.; Almeida,A.B.P.F.; Rodrigues,J.Y.; Nakazato,L.; Fujimori,M.; Sousa,V.R.F..

Patient age does not affect mefloquine concentrations in erythrocytes and plasma during the acute phase of falciparum malaria BJID
Vieira,José Luiz Fernandes; Borges,Larissa Maria Guimarães; Ferreira,Michelle Valéria Dias; Rivera,Juan Gonzalo Bardarez; Gomes,Margarete do Socorro Mendonça.
Abstract Objective To evaluate whether patient age has a significant impact on mefloquine concentrations in the plasma and erythrocytes over the course of treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria. Methods A total of 20 children aged between 8 and 11 years and 20 adult males aged between 22 and 41 years with uncomplicated falciparum malaria were enrolled in the study. Mefloquine was administered to patients in both age groups at a dose of 20 mg kg−1. The steady-state drug concentrations were measured by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Results All patients had an undetectable mefloquine concentration on day 0. In adults, the plasma mefloquine concentrations ranged from 770 to 2930 ng mL−1 and the erythrocyte concentrations...

Ventura,Arlene Sobrinho; Ishikawa,Márcia Mayumi; Gabriel,Andrea Maria de Araújo; Silbiger,Helcy Lylian Nogueira; Cavichiolo,Fabiana; Takemoto,Ricardo Massato.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the histological changes in the liver of thirty-five Gymnotusspp. parasitized by endohelminths collected between April 2012 to October 2013 in commercial bait fish farming of Pantanal basin. Histological cuts of 7µm were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for parasites research and liver changes and have also been submitted to the Perls histochemical method for evaluation of hemosiderosis (Fe+++) based on the incidence degree and severity of change (Grade I, II and III) and tests for the presence of central melanomacrophages. Parasites identified were: Brevimulticaecumsp. with a prevalence of 22,9%, Eustrongylidessp 17,1%, Contracaecumtype I 68,7%, Contracaecumtype II 5,7%, Contracaecumtype III 5,7% and larvae of...
