Einfluss von Wirtschaftsweise und Betriebstyp auf die Artenvielfalt im Grünland Organic Eprints
Heidt, Hanna; Stoll, Evelyne; Moes, Georges; Dahlem, Richard; Zimmer, Steffi.
For decades the loss of biodiversity in cultivated landscapes has been extremely high. Now the question arises how to combine profitable farming practices with the conservation of species-rich grassland (SRG. The aim of the study was to analyse the relation between grassland biodiversity, cultivation method (organic or conventional), cultivation intensity (low-input or intensive), profitability and type of farms (beef or dairy farm). For this study grassland biodiversity recordings of 12 organic and 12 conventional farms were analysed in a pairwise comparison. These results were then applied to the economic factors of the farms. Significant differences in biodiversity were found within cultivations methods and type of farms. Organic farms had a higher...

The influence of phosphorus deficiency on growth and nitrogen fixation of white clover plants Organic Eprints
Høgh-Jensen, Dr Henning; Schjoerring, Dr Jan K.; Soussana, Dr Jean-Francois.
The effects of P deficiency on growth, N2-fixation and photosynthesis in white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were investigated using three contrasting relative addition rates of P, or following abrupt withdrawal of the P supply. Responses to a constant below-optimum P supply rate consisted of a decline in N2-fixation per unit root weight and a small reduction in the efficiency with which electrons were allocated to the reduction of N2 in the nodules. Abrupt P removal arrested nodule growth and caused a substantial decline in nitrogenase activity per unit root weight, but not per unit nodule mass. Similarly, the rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area was unaffected by abrupt P removal, while the CO2 acquisition for the plant as a whole decreased due to...

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation and N-transfer in a grass-white clover mixture Organic Eprints
Vinther, Finn P..
Symbiotic N2 fixation (SNF) and transfer of fixed N from clover to grass in a grass-white clover mixture was measured during two years using 15N isotope dilution techniques. White clover derived from 87 to 99% of its N from the atmosphere. The total SNF ranged from 150 to 277 kg N ha-1 yr-1, which corresponded to 34-45 mg N fixed per gram of white clover dry weight. The transfer of fixed N from clover to grass corresponded to approximately 10 kg N ha-1 yr-1.

Mixed grazing with heifers and pregnant sows Organic Eprints
Søegaard, Karen; Sehested, Jakob; Danielsen, Viggo.
In 1999, a mixed grazing system with heifers and pregnant sows was compared with grazing systems with heifers and sows alone. Normally, herbage quality used for sow grazing is not optimal for high herbage intake and it was therefore examined whether mixed grazing with heifers could improve the grazing system. Herbage quality and botanical composition of the sward was best in swards where heifers grazed alone, followed by swards with mixed grazing and the poorest quality and composition were in swards, where the sows grazed alone. The daily weight gain of the sows tended to be higher and the weight gain of the heifers was significantly higher for mixed than at mono grazing. The mixed grazing system seems to be a usable alternative for grazing sowas.

Profitability of organic and conventional dairy production with different dietary proportions of high-quality grass silage Organic Eprints
Patel, M.; Wredle, E.; Spörndly, E.; Bertilsson, J.; Kumm, K.-I..
Profitability in milk production was calculated using diets with three different proportions of high-quality grass silage. The treatments consisted of the same feeds, but differed in the dietary proportion of forage: low (L), medium (M) and high (H), representing one conventional and two organic diets. The calculations were based on results in feed intake and milk production from a large dairy cow experiment. In the calculations, three different districts with different conditions for farming were used as models, and calculations were performed on two different herd sizes. In addition, current financial supports were both included and excluded in the calculations. The results showed only minor differences in profitability between using in average 60% or...

Effects of feeding dairy cows different legume-grass silages on milk phytoestrogen concentration Organic Eprints
Höjer, Annika; Adler, Steffen; Purup, Stig; Hansen-Møller, Jens; Martinsson, Kjell; Steinshamn, Håvard; Gustavsson, Anne-Maj.
Phytoestrogens are hormone-like substances in plants that can substantially influence human health (positively or negatively), and when fed to dairy cows are partly transferred to their milk. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of varying the botanical composition and regrowth interval of legume-grass silage on phytoestrogen intake and milk phytoestrogen concentrations. In one experiment, 15 Swedish Red dairy cows were fed two- or three-cut red clover-grass silage, or two-cut birdsfoot trefoil-grass silage. In a second experiment, 16 Norwegian Red dairy cows were fed short-term ley silage with red clover or long-term ley silage with white clover, and the effects of supplementation with α-tocopherol were also tested. There were high...

Sulphur supply: a limiting factor in organic roughage-based livestock production? Organic Eprints
Bakken, Anne Kjersti; Hansen, Sissel; Strøm, Turid; Steinshamn, Håvard.
Abstract - The herbage sulphur (S) content on 28 organic farms was monitored in order to evaluate the S supply for plants and ruminants in organic livestock production. The S content and the protein content were generally low. S fertilisation improved the yield and protein content of red clover only when the initial S supply was very low. Increasing S application rates did not increase the S content of red clover above a certain level that depended on other soil and environmental factors. Instead of an increase in the shoots with increasing S supply, there was an accumulation of S in the roots.

Main, Michael; Lynch, Derek; Ward, Amanda; Voroney, Paul; Schneider, Kim; Juurlink, Shelly.
2. Études en...

Utilisation and quality of fodders from grass-lands in organic livestock production in Poland Organic Eprints
Jankowska-Huflejt, Dr Halina; Wróbel, Dr Barbara; Kaca, Prof. Edmund.
During the years 2004-2005 the investigation of organic farms with livestock production with the questionnaire method and chemical analyses of fod-der from permanent grasslands were cared out. The structure of agriculture lands, type of livestock pro-duction, livestock density and fodders quality from grasslands were evaluated. The quality and quantity of fodders from organic farms was similar to feeds from conventional farms. Also the utilisation of grass-lands for livestock production was better on the stud-ied organic farms than on conventional farms. The high proportion of pastures suggest he proper direc-tion of grasslands utilisation and indicates better effectiveness of those lands in relation to conven-tional farms
