The aim of this paper was to accurately estimate population parameters of northern (“bonaerensis”, latitude < 41° S) and southern (“patagonic”, latitude 41° S) Argentine anchovy stocks and to describe some aspects of their behaviour. The research surveys allowed to obtain data on length, total weight, sex, maturity and age of 27,853 specimens of the northern and 12,787 of the southern stocks. Besides, 20,717 age determinations stemmed from commercial landing samplings of the northern stock were established. Sex proportion in the northern population was 0.50 : 0.50; the southern showed a slight predominance of males (0.52 : 0.48). Data derived from cruises and commercial landings showed statistical differences in the growth ratio of the northern stock... |

The information gathered in Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) Northern population assessment cruises allowed to perform studies on the zooplankton community of the Buenos Aires shelf since 1995. In this work the most relevant results as regards the taxonomy and size structure of the community, faunistic areas, and 'key' species in relation to the hydrographic conditions and frontal systems of the region are presented. Besides, the consequences those results might have on Argentine anchovy trophic ecology are analyzed. The taxonomic groups studied included copepods, cladocerans, appendicularians, chaetognaths, amphipods, and euphausiids. The multivariate analysis applied to quantitative data allowed to clearly distinguish three faunistic areas with... |

The Workshop on the Management of Shared Small Pelagic Fishery Resources in Northwest Africa was held in Banjul, the Gambia, from 30 April to 3 May 2002. The objectives of the workshop were to examine the implications of national and joint management o f shared stocks using Sardinella sp. and Trachurus sp. as cas e studies, to explore possible ways o f how sustainabl e management o f shared stocks can be achieved, to propose options aimed at ensuring optimal and sustainabl e use of small pelagic fish resources for the benefit o f coastal countries, and to suggest the way forward for a regional management system for the adoption and implementation of fisheries management. As a general recommendation the group suggests to support the current FAO Working... |

Within the frame of the National Program (PNM), 'Assessment of Marine Tunisian Resources' (1996-1999), two prospecting surveys on small pelagic fishes, have been led in narrow collaboration with French Institute IFREMER. Their objectives were to specify the relative fishes abundance, their spatial-temporal variability but also to quantify the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) of this resource. A third important goal was to familiarize a Tunisian scientist team, with numerical methods and data processing used during the cruises (reading of echograms, treatments of data, etc.) in stocks assessment. It is known that the indirect stocks assessment methods of small pelagic species is not reliable, reason for which we opted to apply echo - integration techniques.... |
