Typologie des pêcheurs embarqués pêchant dans et aux abords de la Réserve Naturelle Marine de La Réunion (enquêtes de juillet à octobre 2010) ArchiMer
Lemoigne, Valerie; Fleury, Pierre-gildas.
Marine Protected Areas (MPA) have turned to be a privileged tool for sustainable management of coastal areas and associated activities. But MPA's results for biodiversity and sustainable fisheries have to be assessed. That is the aim of PAMPA project, which is built on the experience of 7 French MPAs in the Mediterranean sea and in the overseas territories. In this PAMPA project, Ifremer Océan Indien has mainly been involved in the analysis of fisheries data and opinion surveys, conducted from July to October 2010, towards fishermen on board around the coral reef. About sixty fishermen have been interviewed. Only two of them denied answering. Recreational fishers are "local people", about forty or fifty years old, regularly at sea, but without fishing...

Comment améliorer la précocité de l'alerte en conchyliculture ? Exemple des mortalités de moules en 2014 dans les Pertuis Charentais ArchiMer
Lupo, Coralie; Prou, Jean.
Surveillance of shellf ish health is based on clinical surveillance of shellfish mortality, including a detection phase and a mandatory notification phase. While control measures are limited, early detection of pathogens is a challenge which needs to be met. The relevance and feasibility of an enhanced clinical surveillance based on phone interviews were studied. The results made it possible to reconstruct the spatial and temporal evolution of the outbreaks of mussel mortality which occurred in Pertuis Charentais in 2014. Moreover, a qualitative analysis of the interviews revealed contextual elements that were used to enhance the previous description and to devise causal scenarios which could be used as research hypotheses. By incorporating the...

Local fishermen's perceptions of the usefulness of artificial reef ecosystem services in Portugal ArchiMer
Ramos, Jorge; Lino, Pedro G.; Himes-cornell, Amber; Santos, Miguel N..
Proponents of artificial reef (AR) deployment are often motivated by the usefulness of such structures. The usefulness of ARs is related to their capability of providing ecosystem services/additional functions. We present two distinct Portuguese AR case studies: (1) The Nazare reef off the central coast of Portugal and (2) the Oura reef off the Algarve coast. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with local fishermen in the fishing towns of Nazare and Quarteira pre-and post-AR deployment. The main focus of the interviews was to understand fishermen's perception of AR usefulness (or lack thereof) in terms of nine ecosystem services/additional functions potentially provided by the ARs. We tested the null hypothesis that ARs do not provide additional...

PERCEPTIONS OF RISKS AND RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES; AN ANALYSIS OF DUTCH LIVESTOCK FARMERS AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M.; Hardaker, J. Brian.
The risk environment of farmers is changing and new risk management strategies are being introduced. Beal (1996) stated that risk management strategies adopted by farmers will be in accordance with their personal preferences for risk. In this context it would be useful for developers and sellers of new risk management strategies to have insight into farmers' preferences for risk. This paper studies to what extent such preferences are farmer-specific or whether general relationships exist. By means of a large questionnaire survey among 2700 livestock farmers in the Netherlands we gathered data on four groups of variables, i.e. socioeconomic characteristics of the farm, farmers' attitudes towards risk, their perceptions of sources of risk, and their...

Environmental Perceptions and Behavioral Change of Hillside Farmers: The Case of Haiti AgEcon
Bayard, Budry; Jolly, Curtis M..
Land degradation is one of the most serious problems facing resource-poor tropical hillside farmers. Studies examining determinants of farmers’ decisions to invest in land improvement technologies have focused on economic and financial factors, neglecting individuals’ perceptions and awareness of the problems and how they affect land use and behavioral change that enhance environmental sustainability. This study examines Haitian peasants’ environmental behavior structure using a structural equation modeling approach. Specifically, the study examines the effects of perceived susceptibility, seriousness, benefits, and barriers to change on attitude, and the causal effect of attitude on behavior. The influence of the level of resources extracted from the land...

USING BEST WORST SCALING TO INVESTIGATE PERCEPTIONS OF CONTROL AND CONCERN OVER FOOD AND NON-FOOD RISKS AgEcon
Erdem, Seda; Rigby, Dan.
This research locates a series of risks or hazards within a framework characterized by the level of control respondents believe they have over the risks, and the level of worry the risks prompt. It does this for a set of both food and non-food risks. The means by which this is done is novel and differs from past risk perception analyses in that it asks people directly regarding their relative assessments of the levels of control and worry regarding the risks presented. The cognitive burden associated with people ranking and scaling items in large sets is notoriously heavy and so this study uses an elicitation method designed to make the process intuitive and cognitively manageable for respondents. The substantive analysis of the risk perceptions has 4 main...

WHO IS MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THE MEAT WE EAT IS SAFE? AgEcon
Erdem, Seda; Rigby, Dan; Wossink, Ada.
We report results of an analysis of the attribution of relative responsibility across the stages of the food chain for ensuring food safety. Specifically, we identify perceptions of the share of the overall responsibility that each stage in the food chain has to ensure that the meat people cook and eat at home does not cause them to become ill. Results are reported for two groups of stakeholders: consumers and farmers, and for two types of meat: chicken and beef. The stakeholders’ opinions regarding the relative degrees of responsibility of the sequential food chain stages (feed supplier, farmer, livestock transportation, abattoir,… consumer) are elicited via surveys using the Maximum Difference technique (best-worst scaling). The data are analyzed using...

PROCESSORS’ PERCEPTION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SOME CASSAVA PROCESSING INNOVATIONS IN OGUN STATE, NIGERIA AgEcon
Adebayo, K.; Sangosina, M.A..
The current drive towards higher levels of commercialisation of cassava processing under the Presidential Initiative on Cassava requires that the scale of cassava processing be increased in Nigeria. Primary data obtained from 112 respondents selected from the 4 extension zones of Ogun State was used to examine the perception of effectiveness of innovations by cassava processors and the factors responsible for adoption of these innovations. The processors’ perception of effectiveness of cassava processing innovations was measured on a 5-point Likert-type scale containing 20 items. Most of the respondents (75%) are indifferent in their perception of the effectiveness of innovations in cassava processing. All the cassava processing innovations considered in...

Literature review on the perception of agro-foods quality cues in the international environment AgEcon
Marchesini, Sergio; Hasimu, Huliyeti; Regazzi, Domenico.
Consumers look for the highest affordable food quality, given their household budgets and perceptions of product quality. Such perception is however strictly related to culturally linked variables, and the importance attached to each component of the overall quality vary greatly among countries. Different perceptions lead to different purchase decisions. This concept is even clearer for the aspects of quality that can’t be tested directly. Consumer goods may be divided into search, experience and credence goods, depending on when the consumer is capable of assessing their quality (before buying, after consuming or in the very long term). Most quality agro-food products, such as food with geographical indications (GIs) and low input food (LIFs), fall into...

Social Capital and Soil Erosion Control in Agriculturally Marginal Areas of Kenya: The Case of Machakos and Taita-Taveta Districts AgEcon
Obare, Gideon A.; Mwakubo, Samuel M.; Ouma, Emily Awuor; Mohammed, Lutta; Omiti, John M..
This paper evaluates the farmers’ perception of the soil erosion problem, and identifies and analyses social capital elements that motivate households to actively participate in soil conservation in agricultural production process. The data used in the study was generated using a structured questionnaire in a survey that covered 321 households in Kenya’s semi arid districts of Machakos and Taita-Taveta Districts. Two modelling strategies were used: A Probit model was used to estimate the likelihoods of factors that may influence farmers’ perception of soil erosion problem, and a Tobit to estimate parameters of factors that influence terracing intensity. The results indicate that although perception of the soil erosion problem is relatively high in the...

Perception paysanne et adoption des biopesticides et/ou extraits botaniques en production maraîchère au Bénin AgEcon
Adekambi, Souleimane Adeyemi; Adegbola, Patrice Ygue; Arouna, Aminou.
The importance of farmers’ perceptions of characteristics on agricultural innovation adoption has increased these two decades. Empirical studies revealed that in addition to farmers’ socioeconomic characteristics and institutional factors, farmers’ perceptions of the innovation-specific characteristics are particularly important in determining whether or not to adopt them. This study assessed vegetables farmers’ perceptions of botanical extracts and biopesticides compared with current chemical pesticides. It also examined the relationship between farmers’ perceptions and the adoption of botanical extracts and biopesticides. Data were collected from a stratified randomly sample of 198 vegetables farmers selected in vegetable producing zones in Benin and...

Farmers Perception and Adaptation to Climate Change: An Estimation of Willingness to Pay AgEcon
Acquah, H. de-Graft; Onumah, Edward E..
This paper assesses farmers’ perception and adaptation to climate change to enhance policy towards tackling the challenges climate change poses to the farmers in Ghana. With regards to farmers’ perception and methods of adaptation, majority of the farmers perceived increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall pattern. Farmers’ level of adaptation was found to be relatively high with majority of the farmers using changing planting dates, different crop varieties, soil conservation and water harvesting as the major adaptation measures to climate change impacts. However, access to water, high cost of adaptation, lack of information, lack of knowledge on adaptation, insecure property rights, insufficient access to inputs and lack of credits were identified...

Distrust of the State and observance of the law among peasants in the San Nicolas Valley Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Durán-Palacio,Nicolasa María; Cogollo-Ospina,Sonia Natalia; Moreno-Carmona,Norman Darío.
Abstract In Colombia, political decisions related to the countryside preserve an unjust social order, maintaining inequities and obstacles to the well-being and life quality of farmers. In this scenario the Territorial Arrangement Planning of the San Nicolas Valley, in the East of the department of Antioquia, has generated a series of rural conflicts that accentuate the vulnerabilities of rural residents, threatening the agricultural tradition in this subregion. Thus, this study inquired about the perceptions of legality in the peasant population of the area. A descriptive-correlational study with non-probabilistic sampling was carried out, including 380 peasants, members of civic-rural associations of the San Nicolas Valley, evaluating in four scales:...

Perception and use of non-native and invasive flora from Sierras de Córdoba in central Argentina Acta Botanica
Martínez,Gustavo Javier; Manzano-García,Jessica.
ABSTRACT The perception, knowledge and use of non-native and invasive flora by social actors associated with protected areas in central Argentina were analyzed. Contemporary ethnoecology methods were followed. A total of 108 non-native species of botanical interest was documented. An organization of species is proposed according to their Relative Importance, and on an attitude scale in relation to conservation/elimination interest. In the case of invasive species, perceptions on ecology, importance and/or control are discussed based on the profiles of the social actors. The results shed light upon local points of view and nuances of what “non-native” and “invasive” means to the studied rural population. The use spectrum for some of the non-native species...
