Performance evaluation of a bush mango (irvingia gabonensis) nut cracking machine CIGR Journal
AVIARA, NDUBISI A.; Iyilade, Idowu J.; Oyeniyi, Samuel K.; Aremu, Ademola K..
A bush mango (Irvingia gabonensis) nut handling machine was developed to ease the tedium involved in the cracking operation and enhance the efficiency of separating the kernels from hulls. The machine consists of a hopper, cracking unit barrel, electric motor, blower, tool frame, hull outlet and kernel outlet. It operates on the principle of impact using centrifugal force from the baffles on a spinning disc. Results of performance tests carried out using nuts at four moisture levels in the range of 7.52-20.6% (d.b) showed that percent effective cracking decreased, while percentage kernel breakage increased with increase in feed rate, moisture content and resident time of nuts in the cracking chamber. Winnowing efficiency increased with feed rate and...

Development and Evaluation of a Fish Feed Mixer CIGR Journal
ADEBUKOLA, ADENIGBA ADEMOLA.
Abstract A Fish feed mixing machine was designed, developed and the effect of speed and retention time on the performance of the mixer was evaluated. The mixing system was tested using three fish feed ingredients; bone meal, groundnut cake and maize grain which was purchased from the market in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. The moisture content of the bought ingredients was determined to be 13.1%, 14.7% and 17.5% moisture content dry basis respectively. The mixer was tested using a feed component of three equal measures of 10 kg of ground corn (maize), milled groundnut cake and bone meal which were initially retained on 2 mm, 850 µm and 150 µm sieve respectively. The experiment was replicated thrice at four retention time (5 min, 10 min, 15 min and 20 min)...

Developing a mixed solar drier for improved postharvest handling of food grains CIGR Journal
DHANDE, HIMANSHU KISHOR; SHELARE, SAGAR DNYANESHWAR; KHOPE, PRAVIN BALKRUSHNAJI.
Drying of grain is usually achieved by spreading grains on earth for solar radiation. This technique is moderate, but being unsecured from a downpour, dust, invasion of bugs, rodents, and distinct animals, items might be severely degraded to the degree that occasionally becomes contaminated and issued loss of nourishment excellence. To defeat this, solar drying is the greatest assuring technique for the protection of agricultural commodities. In the proposed research, the low-cost mixed-mode solar dryer was developed (Workshop of Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Technology, Pimpri, Pune, Maharashtra, India) using locally accessible, environmentally friendly materials, and the performance was evaluated. The solar dryer was developed using the components like a...

Design, Construction and Performance Evaluation of a Twin Screw Extruder CIGR Journal
Sobowale, Sunday Samuel.
The aim of this study was thus to design, construct a multi-purpose twin screw extruder and evaluate its performance. All parts of the extruder were constructed using locally available materials and its suitable for both batch and continuous production. The extruder essentially consists of the hopper, barrel, variable speed and temperature control, electrical motor and replaceable dies to give different sizes and shapes in the final products. It could also handle feed materials of different rheology. Performance evaluation of the extruder was done using cocoyam flour, varying feed moisture content (FMC) and screw speed (SS). Both the FMC and SS were observed to significantly affect the all performance indicators (expansion ratio, residence time, throughput...

Performance evaluation of PV ventilated hybrid greenhouse dryer under no load condition CIGR Journal
Madhava, Mondru; kumar, Sivala; Bhaskara rao, D; D D, Smith.
The PV ventilated hybrid greenhouse dryer was designed and fabricated for drying of food grains. The greenhouse dryer with 446.7 X 213.4 cm size and with central height of 259 cm was constructed using 50.8X25.4 mm MS pipe, 19X30.2 mm MS angles. Clear twin wall polycarbonate sheet with 6 mm thick was used insulate the greenhouse dryer structure. Performance evaluation was conducted under no load test condition. It was observed that, the average temperature inside the dryer was 7.6-13.40C and 6.3-13.20C (22-43%) higher and average relative humidity was 26-47% and 23-40% lower than ambient temperature and relative humidity during May and December months respectively. Exhaust air flow rate varied in the range of 38.93-81.95 m3/min and 28-63 m3/min during May...

Development of a motorized yam slicer CIGR Journal
Samuel Enyi Obetta; University of Agriculture, Benue State, Nigeria.; J. C. Ehiem.
A motorized yam-slicing device was designed and developed to improve drying by increasing the surfaces area of yam tubers.  It consists of rotary blades, feeding chutes and electric motor.  The operating power was obtained from 1.5 hp electric motor (1,400 rpm) and, using pulley and belt with complete drive.  The device is manually fed with one tuber at a time.  Performance of the device was evaluated using the following parameters: slicing efficiency, throughput and percentage of non -uniform slices.  The slicing efficiency, throughput and non-uniform slices obtained was 52.3%, 315 kg/h and 47.65% respectively.  Making the chute adjustable to different tuber thickness would eliminate wobbling and further reduce the percentage of non-uniform slices.
