Early to Middle Pleistocene Hystrix material in the collections of the IVPP in Beijing, has been biometrically studied and compared with other fossil and extant species. The specimens are from Zhoukoudian (Beijing), the Liucheng Gigantopithecus cave (Guangxi) and other caves in that province, the Wazhuwan and Yanhui Cave (Guizhou) and from Longgupo (Sichuan). None of the fossil specimens can be allocated to the extant Chinese Hystrix brachyura subcristata Swinhoe, 1870, subgenus Acanthion F. Cuvier, 1823. Most of the collections studied consist of a mixture of two species with overlapping size ranges. Cheek teeth of most Hystrix species do not show diagnostic characters other than size, so not every one of them can be assigned with certainty to the larger... |

The number of known sciurid and petauristid fossils from The Netherlands is nearly doubled with the description of material from the Zuurland boreholes, the Maasvlakte, and the Tegelen claypit. The material from Tegelen is assigned to a new species of flying squirrel, Hylopetes debruijni nov. sp. One molar from the late Early Pleistocene of the Zuurland borehole is assigned to Sciurus cf. S. vulgaris. The remaining finds from the Tiglian of the Zuurland boreholes, as well as the single molar from the Maasvlakte, are all assigned to Spermophilus primigenius; this name is preferred over the suggestive use of names of recent ground squirrels for fossil material. The presence, during roughly the same stratigraphic interval, of a flying squirrel in Tegelen and... |

According to caves drawings, male specimens of ice age cave lions lacked a mane. Ethological observations of the recent subspecies showed the significance of the mane of male lions (Panthera leo) in intraspecific social interaction. For the Pleistocene lion, there are two possible implications; the social system was different from the modern subspecies or the cooler climate did not allow the development of manes. Whereas the former can only be discussed, the latter is supported by evidence based on infrared thermography and considerations on thermoregulation. Thermal images of the recent subspecies clearly demonstrate the significance of mane development in terms of functional morphology. Probably, manes in felids can develop in warm climate only. The mane... |

Measurements of many hundreds of the high-crowned cheek teeth of Hystrix specimens from the Euro-Asiatic Pleistocene in the collections of European and Asiatic institutions have been compared with extant species for a revision of the genus. A review is given about the extant genera and species of the family. The number of recognisable Euro-Asiatic species in the fossil record is reduced from eight to five. The European H. (A.) vinogradovi Argyropulo, 1941 is here considered to be a synonym of H. (A.) brachyura Linnaeus, 1758, and the three Asiatic species H. (H.) crassidens Lydekker, 1886, H. (H.) gigantea Van Weers, 1985 and H. (H.) magna Pei, 1987 are synonymized with H. (H.) refossa Gervais, 1852. Most of the Chinese fossil specimens are properly... |

A large number of isolated cheek teeth and a mandibular fragment of porcupines from the Late Pleistocene fissure deposits near Punung, Java, are compared with extant H. (Acanthion) brachyura Linnaeus, 1758 (southeast Asia) and H. (Acanthion) javanica (F. Cuvier, 1823) (Java). Middle Pleistocene and Holocene specimens from Java are compared with the latter species. The Punung specimens belong to one species and are considered a new subspecies, Hystrix brachyura punungensis subsp. nov. The Middle Pleistocene specimens are allocated to Hystrix brachyura subsp. and those from the Holocene to Hystrix javanica. |

Re-examination of the two teeth constituting the original type and genotype material of Villanyia exilis KRETZOI, 1956 from Villány-5, Hungary, indicates that subsequently published descriptions need revision. The tooth selected as the lectotype of Villanyia exilis by RABEDER (1981) is considered here to belong to Clethrionomys kretzoii (KOWALSKI, 1958). The second specimen, with morphology in accordance with the original description of Kretzoi, is considered to represent the characters of Villanyia exilis. In order to stabilise the nomenclature in accordance with current usage an application has been made to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. The fine structure of the enamel of Villanyia exilis as defined above is described for the... |

Hooijer, D.A.. |
In a recent monograph, Maglio (1973) states that Stegodon hypsilophus Hooijer (1954a) must be considered a synonym of Elephas celebensis (Hooijer, 1949). Though Elephas celebensis is smaller-toothed and more hypsodont than the "hypsilophous stegodont" of Java (width of M3 42-52 mm against 62-64 mm; height-width index 106-116 against 87-89: Hooijer, 1954a, b; Maglio, 1973: 46, table 21), Maglio (1973: 47) considers the differences not great when the degree of variation of known samples (in other species) is allowed for. Over the years, I studied molars of pygmy proboscideans from various Indonesian islands, and it never occurred to me that the Java pygmy would be same as that from Celebes until this suggestion was put forth by Dr. Maglio. I had described... |

Terrestrial arthropods are poorly known from the Cenozoic of Jamaica. A probably Late Pleistocene land crab, Sesarma primigenium sp. nov., is described from the Western Cement Company Cave, parish of St. Elizabeth, southwestern Jamaica. The same species is also tentatively recognised from the Late Pleistocene Red Hills Road Cave, parish of St. Andrew, eastern central Jamaica. The propodi of the new species are moderately globose, with an upper margin that is comparatively short and finely granulate ridged; the fingers are obscurely spooned and gaped; and the in-turned fixed finger is in line with, and a litt le shorter than, the basal margin. Of the nine extant endemic members of this subgenus in Jamaica, S. jarvisi Rathbun and S. verleyi Rathbun have... |

ABSTRACT Coastal and marine environments are characterized by a lack of evident physical barriers or geographic isolation, and it may be difficult to understand how divergence can arise and be sustained in marine environments. The identification of 'soft' barriers is a crucial step towards the understanding of gene flow in marine environments. The marine catfishes of the family Ariidae are a demersal group with restricted migratory behavior, no pelagic larval stages, and mechanisms of larval retention, representing a potentially useful model for the understanding of historical processes of allopatric speciation in the marine environment. In the present study, two lineages of the Coco sea catfish, Bagre bagre , were recognized from their complete... |

ABSTRACT The eastern coastal basins of Brazil are a series of small and isolated rivers that drain directly into the Atlantic Ocean. During the Pleistocene, sea-level retreat caused by glaciations exposed the continental shelf, resulting in enlarged paleodrainages that connected rivers that are isolated today. Using Geographic Information System (GIS), we infer the distribution of these paleodrainages, and their properties for the east Brazilian coast. Specifically, using elevation/bathymetric data for the largest sea-level retreats during the Pleistocene, the paleodrainages, their area and the number of contemporary basins connected by each palaeodrainage, was inferred. For the 145 inferred paleodrainages, total paleodrainage area is strongly correlated... |

Along the coast of Tanzania, coral reefs, marine terraces and beach ridges are among the most important geomorphological features indicative of the Pleistocene/Holocene sea level changes. Three major terrace units can easily be identified on the mainland coast, namely, Mtoni (youngest), Tanga and Sakura (oldest). Three terrace units have also been identified on the Islands of Unguja and Pemba. On the basis of the difference in the terrace elevations between the two terrace systems it is postulated that the marine terraces on the islands probably represent minor fluctuations of sea level, rather than major phases of sea level fluctuation. A sand beach on the seaward side and several sand ridges on the landward side represent the Recent phase. The oldest... |

The organic matter in sediment series across two organic-matter–rich layers from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 977A drilled in the Alboran Basin of the Western Mediterranean Sea has been characterized by organic geochemical methods. Organic carbon contents reached more than 2% in the organic-matter–rich layer and was ~1% in the background sediment under and overlying it. Molecular compositions of the extractable bitumens in the organic-matter–rich layer for a wide range of compound groups are broadly similar to those of the background sediments. The organic matter in the organic-matter–rich layer is enriched in marine biomarkers, especially long-chain diols and keto-ols and particularly sterols. A higher supply of landderived material to the sediment during... |

Three families, two genera and two species are recorded for the first time for the Cuban Cretaceous to Pleistocene geologic age. The genera Persephona Leach, 1817 (Leucosiidae), Mithrax Desmarest, 1823 (Majidae) and Panopeus Milne Edwards, 1834 (Panopeidae) are well known in the Recent of the Caribbean region. Fossils of these taxa are found in formations from lower Miocene to upper Pleistocene in age in the Caribbean. Portunus oblongus Rathbun, 1920, an extinct species, is the first species of Portunus Weber, 1795 recorded from Cuban Oligocene–Miocene. Lophoranina precocious Feldmann, Vega, Tucker, García-Barrera y Avendaño, 1996 (Raninidae), other extinct species, is also recorded for the Cretaceous (Campanian- Maastrichtian). This is the most ancient... |

Remains of a medium-sized megathere from Pleistocene deposits near Ulloma, Bolivia, suggest that the commonly accepted synonymy of Megatherium sundti Philippi, 1893 with Megatherium medinae Philippi, 1893 (Mammalia: Xenarthra: Megatheriidae) is unjustified. The strongest evidence supporting the distinction of these species is provided by their femora. In M. medinae the femur is plesiomorphic, bearing nearly parallel lateral and medial margins and an unreduced patellar trochlea. In M. sundti the femur bears strongly concave lateral and medial margins and a somewhat reduced patellar trochlea, resembling the derived condition in Megatherium americanum Cuvier, 1796. Less marked morphological differences in the skull, mandible, and tibia are apparently... |

Pleistovultur nevesi, a new genus and species of a large Vulturidae is described from the Upper Pleistocene or beginning of the Holocene, based on a complete and well preserved right tibiotarsus from the Cuvieri cave deposits, one of the hundreds of caves of the Lagoa Santa region in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Also described here is a distal half of a left tibiotarsus from Gruta dos Brejões, a cave in Morro do Chapéu, Bahia state, Brazil, which probably belongs to another not-yet-known genus and species of the Vulturidae. The described material, added to prior literature, is proof of the appreciable diversity of the Vulturidae during the Pleistocene in South America. |
