In the framework of the Italian National Research Program in Antarctica (PNRA), the Laboratory of Radioecology of the University of Parma developed from 1987 several researches on terrestrial and marine samples. At first the prin-cipal aim was the study of 90Sr, 137Cs, 238Pu, 239+240Pu and 241Am concentrations in samples of soil, ice, seawater and biota collected near the Italian Antarctic Base (Ross Sea, Terra Nova Bay). |

The growing need to evaluate the quality of aquatic ecosystems led to the development of numerous monitoring tools. Among them, the development of biomarker-based procedures, that combine precocity and relevance, is recommended. However, multi-biomarker approaches are often hard to interpret, and produce results that are not easy to integrate in the environmental policies framework. Integrative index have been developed, and one of the most used is the integrated biomarker response (IBR). However, an analysis of available literature demonstrated that the IBR suffers from a frequent misuse and a bias in its calculation. Then, we propose here a new calculation method based on both a more simple formula and a permutation procedure. Together, these... |

Humans currently occupy all continents and by doing so, modify the environment and create novel threats to many species; a phenomenon known as human-induced rapid environmental changes (HIREC). These growing anthropogenic disturbances represent major and relatively new environmental challenges for many animals, and invariably alter selection on traits adapted to previous environments. Those species that survive often have moved from their original habitat or modified their phenotype through plasticity or genetic evolution. Based on the most recent advances in this research area, we predict that wild individuals with highly plastic capacities, relatively high basal stress level, and that are generally shy—in other words, individuals displaying a reactive... |

The study of variations in the concentration of heavy metals inside a tank filled with the water of a neighbouring lagoon has been carried out since August 1977•The analysis concerned a lagoon station and the bath built for ECOTRON program, closed to this lagoon. They deal with water, molluscs and the sediment. Inside the lagoon station, the tested molluscs are Prosobranch Gastropods : Trochocochlea carinata and inside the basin, cockles : Cerastoderma glaucum. The results point out that the concentration of these heavy metals vary with the tissue in relation with physical and chemical medium parameters, and it can be particularly observed a significative correlation between both the whole concentration of these elements inside the sediment and the... |
