Further observations on North African and South Iberian Bathyporeia (Crustacea, Amphipoda), with the description of a new species Naturalis
Udekem d’Acoz, C. d'; Echchaoui, H.M.C.; Menioui, M..
A new species of amphipod, Bathyporeia watkini sp. nov. from the Atlantic coasts of North Africa is described. This very characteristic species is abundant in some lagoons and estuaries near 28°N. New morphological information on B. elkaimi d’Udekem d’Acoz and Menioui, 2004 is given after specimens that were recently collected on the Atlantic coasts of southern Spain and South Portugal. The male of B. ledoyeri d’Udekem d’Acoz and Menioui, 2004 is described for the first time and new records of North African B. guilliamsoniana (Bate, 1857) and B. chevreuxi d'Udekem d'Acoz and Vader, 2005a are discussed.

Gammaridea and Caprellidea (Crustacea — Amphipoda) of the Portuguese south-western continental shelf: taxonomy and distributional ecology Naturalis
Marques, João Carlos; Bellan-Santini, Denise.
Amphipods from the Portuguese south and south-western continental shelf were studied with regard to the species inventory, distribution, and ecology. This study allowed the identification of 113 species, belonging to 52 genera; of these species 28 are recorded for the first time along the Portuguese coast. Two species, Ampelisca heterodactyla Schellenberg, 1925, and A. latifrons Schellenberg, 1925, are redescribed. The latter is different from the Ampelisca named latifrons by Ledoyer in 1972 and 1982. The absolute frequencies and abundances of the species, and their distribution in terms of bathymetry and type of substrate are also analysed. The most frequent and abundant species also presented wide ranges of vertical distribution. In addition, these...

<i>Fosliella farinosa</i> (Lamouroux) Howe var. <i>chalicodictya</i> Taylor (Rhodophyceae-Cryptonemiales) et <i>Lophosiphonia scopulorum</i> (Harvey) Womersley (Rhodophyceae-Ceramiales) récoltées en Méditerranée nord-occidentale OMA
Coppejans, E..
<i>Fosliella farinosa</i> (Lamour.) Howe var. <i>chalicodictya</i> Taylor has been described in 1939 after material from the Caribbean Sea. It has never been mentioned since the <i>descriptio princeps</i>. We found it sometimes while assorting phytosociological relevés from Banyuls and Port-Cros (France). <i>Lophosiphonia scopulorum</i> (Harv.) Womersl., described from Australia, has recently been mentioned by Ardre (1970) along the Portuguese coasts. We noted this species at Banyuls. Both taxa are new for the Mediterranean Sea; the first one is new for the French algological flora.

Uptake of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in turbid, tidal estuaries OMA
Middelburg, J.J.; Nieuwenhuize, J..
Ammonium and nitrate uptake was measured in 6 European tidal estuaries (Ems, Rhine, Scheldt, Loire, Gironde and Douro) using 15N-tracer techniques. Uptake rates of ammonium and nitrate ranged from 0.005 to 1.56 µmol N l-1h-1 and 0.00025 to 0.25 µmol N l-1 h-1, respectively, and differed significantly between and within estuaries. Analysis of nitrogen uptake using the relative preferential index (RPI) indicated ammonium to be the preferred substrate. The turnover times of particulate nitrogen (0.7 to 31 d) and dissolved ammonium (0.1 to 27 d) were similar to or shorter than estuarine-water residence times, whereas turnover times of dissolved...

Comparing the Productive Efficiency of Cooperatives and Private Enterprises: The Portuguese Wine Industry as a Case Study AgEcon
Barros, Carlos Pestana; Santos, J.C. Gomes.
This paper compares the efficiency of cooperatives and private enterprises in the Portuguese wine industry, employing data envelopment analysis (DEA). The use of DEA for the analysis of comparative efficiency within a sector is a key tool in evaluating organizational competitiveness. Competitiveness should be based on benchmarking the different types of organizations that comprise the viniculture sector. We conclude that Portuguese wine cooperatives, on average, are more efficient than their private counterparts. Economic implications arising from the study are discussed.

Consumer and Supply Chain Dynamics in the Portuguese Organic Milk Market AgEcon
Rosa, Rui; Mili, Samir; Briz, Julian.
This study explores consumer demand for organic milk products (OMP) and prospective developments in OMP supply chain in Portugal. Consumer demand is approached through a survey accomplished with a stratified sample of 625 consumers from the Porto Metropolitan area (north Portugal), whose population provides a broad representation of Portuguese. Likely future developments in the Portuguese OMP supply chain are established for 2015 time horizon through the Delphi technique, using a panel of 27 qualified experts from different professional backgrounds. Results show inter alia that there are among consumers significant lack of knowledge and conceptual distortion about the organic notion. Cluster analysis has led to the detection of three differentiated...

Institutions of Sustainability and Multifunctional Landscapes: Lessons from the Case of the Algarve AgEcon
Thiel, Andreas.
The paper uses function analysis to complement the analytical framework Institutions of Sustainability and to apply it for the analysis of the role of institutions for the multifunctionality of landscapes. This combination of conceptual tools is evaluated through their application to the case of landscape development in a sub-region of the Algarve, Portugal. In view of this case study it is suggested to complement the Institutions of Sustainability framework: case and transaction specific contextual factors should be included. The paper suggests to look at cross-jurisdictional agency features, cross-function, -transaction and -institutional commonalities, and interconnections as well as to include a dynamic dimension of institutional and physical time lags...

Typology of the Portuguese Farm Holdings and Taxation Regimes AgEcon
Godinho, Maria de Lurdes Ferro; Coelho, Maria Leonor Macedo de Seabra.
The study describes the evolution, since the Portuguese accession to the European Community, in 1986, of the different types of farm holdings (household-farms, corporations, co-operatives and other legal forms), using the Agricultural Census data. In addition, the experience of agricultural taxation in Portugal in the context of the ongoing policy debate about the tax structure and tax reform affecting agricultural producers is addressed for different categories of farms. The research also examines the problems associated with tax regimes. A major problem has been the measurement of the actual taxable farm income. The different measures to estimate farm income are explained for the various taxation regimes.

Coping with ex ante Regulations and ex post Liability Rules for Planting Bt-maize – The Portuguese Experience AgEcon
Skevas, Theodoros; Fevereiro, P.; Wesseler, Justus.
This study investigates the attitude and practices of GM and non-GM maize farmers in Portugal. Thirty seven GM maize farmers were interviewed representing 22.5% of the total number of GM maize notifications in the country. Additionally, 66 non-GM maize farmers were surveyed in an attempt to investigate their opinion on the Bt technology, its viability and its future. The most interesting finding is that almost half of all the surveyed maize farmers (GM and non-GM) stated that the ex ante regulations are rigid and difficult to apply. On the contrary, the ex post tort liability rules are very clear and provide the appropriate security for the continuation of the GM maize cultivation.

Consumer Perceptions and Attitudes Towards Food Safety in Portugal AgEcon
Ventura-Lucas, Maria Raquel.
The recent food crises and its great diffusion through the media had as consequence a reduction of the European consumer's confidence, in general, and of the Portuguese ones in particular, in the products that they buy and consume. These events also served to disclose some of the existing problems in the current marketing chain, in which many sectors result to have low, or no transparency or unknown ones to the consumers. For moreover, these crises had demonstrated that science and technology, in set with the governmental regulation do not offer guarantees that the risks associated with food have acceptable levels. All these questions triggered the interest of researchers to study the impact of food safety related issues on consumer behaviour. The...

Farm Structure and the Effects of Agri-Environmental Programs: Results from a Matching Analysis for European Countries AgEcon
Pufahl, Andrea; Weiss, Christoph R..
This paper extends previous research (Pufahl and Weiss, 2009) and applies a semi-parametric propensity score matching approach to evaluate the effects of agrienvironment (AE) programs on input use and farm output of individual farms in eight Member States of the European Union. We find substantial differences in treatment effects between countries. The analysis reveals significant effects of AE participation on production (Germany, France) and farm profits (France, Ireland, United Kingdom). AE participation sporadically reduces the intensity of land use as measured by the purchase of farm chemicals (fertilizer, pesticide) and grazing livestock densities. We also find differences in the treatment effect among farms with different farm size (heterogeneous...

A Multi-Criteria Approach for Irrigation Water Management AgEcon
Saraiva, Joao Paulo; Pinheiro, Antonio Cipriano.
The major implications that the European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive (WFD) may have in irrigated agriculture were analysed using alternative water policy measures. The consequences of policy change were evaluated in a case study (Baixo Alentejo, Portugal), using a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) model that simulates farmers’ preferred behaviour. The study compares the effects of water pricing (volumetric and flat tariffs) and consumption quotas, in farmer’s income, water agency revenues, agricultural employment and water demand for irrigation. Model results indicate that the adjustments in farmer’s responses are dependent on the policy strategy enforced and on the policy level.

Demand for Organic Milk Products in Portugal AgEcon
Rosa, Rui; Briz, Julian; Mili, Samir.
Milk consumption patterns are changing in Portugal. Factors like convenience, quality and safety increasingly constitute the basis for the Portuguese consumer purchasing decision. Demand for organic milk products (OMP) is emerging while most of these products are supplied by foreign companies. This study explores the demand for OMP in Portugal using both direct market observation and multivariate methods, in particular factor and cluster analysis. It appears that there are specific emerging segments preferring OMP, as they are increasingly concerned by health attributes and environmental protection.

Sustainability of Local Agri-food Products in the Border Area of Northern Portugal and Castilla-Léon AgEcon
Baptista, Alberto; Tiberio, Luis; Cristovao, Artur.
Even in relatively peripheral areas, such as the Portuguese-Spanish border regions, agriculture and food systems have changed greatly in the last decades. Traditional agricultural systems have been declining and some products are no longer appreciated, or even tend to become quantitatively insignificant. Not only are producers ageing but their knowledge and know-how along with the local genetic heritage and biodiversity associated with farming are at risk of disappearing. Local products and markets have been progressively integrated into the larger framework of the global food market. Distributors, restaurant owners and consumers in general rely more and more on exogenous food products, despite the undeniable quality of the existing products and the...

A agricultura familiar em Portugal: rupturas e continuidades Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Carmo,Renato Miguel do.

Assigning dates and identifying areas affected by fires in Portugal based on MODIS data Anais da ABC (AABC)
PANISSET,JESSICA; DACAMARA,CARLOS C.; LIBONATI,RENATA; PERES,LEONARDO F.; CALADO,TERESA J.; BARROS,ANA.
ABSTRACT An automated procedure is here presented that allows identifying and dating burned areas in Portugal using values of daily reflectance from near-infrared and middle-infrared bands, as obtained from the MODIS instrument. The algorithm detects persistent changes in monthly composites of the so-called (V,W) Burn-Sensitive Index and the day of maximum change in daily time series of W is in turn identified as the day of the burning event. The procedure is tested for 2005, the second worst fire season ever recorded in Portugal. Comparison between the obtained burned area map and the reference derived from Landsat imagery resulted in a Proportion Correct of 95.6%. Despite being applied only to the months of August and September, the algorithm is able to...

Occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in silages assessed by fluorescent in situ hybridization Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,M.; Guerra,M.; Bernardo,F..

Patterns of avian malaria in tropical and temperate environments: testing the "The enemy release hypothesis" Biota Neotropica
Antonini,Yasmine; Lobato,Debora Nogueira Campos; Norte,Ana Cláudia; Ramos,Jaime A.; Moreira,Patrícia de Abreu; Braga,Erika Martins.
Abstract: According to the enemy release hypothesis (ERH) the spread of invasive species will be facilitated by release from their enemies as they occupy new areas. However, the ERH has rarely been tested by comparing populations of native (non-invasive, long established) species with expanding or shifting ranges, to the same species as invasive in another area. We tested the ERH with respect to blood parasite levels (prevalence and intensity of Plasmodium spp. and Haemoproteus spp.) of (a) two closely related, widely distributed species of thrush (Turdus leucomelas and T. merula), and (b) an invasive sparrow (Passer domesticus) whose range has expanded from the Old World to the New World since the 18th century. A total of 158 birds were sampled in...
