Atmospheric deposition is an important component of the nutrient cycles of terrestrial ecosystems, but field measurements are especially scarce in tropical regions. In this study we analysed 15 months of precipitation chemistry collected in an old growth tropical forest located in French Guiana. We measured nutrient inputs via bulk precipitation and throughfall and used the canopy budget model to estimate nutrient fluxes via canopy exchange and dry deposition. Based on this method we quantified net fluxes of macronutrients and compared their contribution to internal cycling rates via litterfall. Our results suggest that while atmospheric deposition of nitrogen was relatively high (13 kg ha−1 year−1), and mainly in organic forms, the N inputs via litterfall... |

Acacia mearnsii is the third forest species more planted in Brazil, especially in small farms at Rio Grande do Sul State. The species is also known as black wattle and is important as a source of tannin, timber, pulpwood and rayon. Its fast growth results in high demand of nutrients and fertilization is necessary to keep site productivity. In this paper it is reported the results of the application of four doses of Phosphorous (0, 20, 40, 80g/tree as P2O5) and three of Potassium (0, 20, 40g/tree as K2O), in a factorial designed trial established on a chemically poor soil at the region of Ponta Grossa, State of Paraná, Brazil. Trees were implanted in a 3m X 2m spacing with 35 plants per plot. The fertilizers were applied in furrows between the rows at the... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of temperature (10, 20, 30, 20/10 and 30/10ºC) and period of storage on electrical conductivity (EC) in four seed lots of corn (Zea mays L.), as well as the mineral composition of the soaking solution. EC test determines indirectly the integrity of seed membrane systems, and is used for the assessment of seed vigor, because this test detects the seed deterioration process since its early phase. The research comprised determinations of water content, germination, accelerated aging (AA), cold (CT) and EC vigor tests, and determinations of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ release to the solution, after seed soaking of four corn seed lots. The evaluations were performed each four months during a period of 16 months. For... |
