Community forests and protected areas have each been proposed as strategies to stop deforestation. These management strategies should be regarded as hypotheses to be evaluated for their effectiveness in particular places. We evaluated the community-forestry hypothesis and the protected-area hypothesis in community forests with commercial timber production and strict protected areas in the Maya Forest of Guatemala and Mexico. From land-use and land cover change (LUCC) maps derived from satellite images, we compared deforestation in 19 community forests and 11 protected areas in both countries in varying periods from 1988 to 2005. Deforestation rates were higher in protected areas than in community forests, but the differences were not significant. An...

The Conservation Contributions of Conservation Easements: Analysis of the San Francisco Bay Area Protected Lands Spatial Database Ecology and Society
Rissman, Adena R; University of California at Berkeley; arissman@nature.berkeley.edu; Merenlender, Adina M; University of California at Berkeley; adina@nature.berkeley.edu.
Conservation easements have emerged as an important tool for land trusts and government agencies aiming to conserve private land in the United States. Despite the increase in public investment in conservation easement acquisitions, little is known about their conservation outcomes, particularly at a landscape scale. The nine-county San Francisco Bay Area exemplifies a complex conservation context: 190 organizations hold 24% of the land base in some type of protection status. Using a detailed protected lands database, we compared the contributions of conservation easements and fee-simple protected areas to ecological, agricultural, and public recreation benefits. We found that conservation easements were more likely to conserve grasslands, oak woodlands,...

Invasive alien species management in Patagonia, Argentina: Prioritization, achievements and science-policy integration challenges identified by the National Parks Administration: Invasive alien species are a threat to biodiversity. Management options encompass prevention, early detection, eradication, control, exclusion and even"no action." More technical information is needed to achieve complex management actions successfully. In addition, managers and researchers address the problem with different approaches. Managers seek to prioritize management actions, and for researchers, these species are an opportunity to study basic and/or theoretical aspects, but not always applied to management. However, the management strategies offer a unique opportunity for...

Marine biodiversity in Venezuela: Status and perspectives Gayana
Miloslavich,Patricia; Klein,Eduardo; Yerena,Edgard; Martin,Alberto.
Venezuela is among the ten countries with the highest biodiversity in the world, both in the terrestrial and the marine environment. Due to its biogeographical position, Venezuelan marine flora and fauna are composed of species from very different marine bioregions such as the Caribbean and the Orinoco Delta. The ecosystems in the Caribbean have received considerable attention but now, due to the tremendous impact of human activities such as tourism, over-exploitation of marine resources, physical alteration, the oil industry, and pollution, these environments are under great risk and their biodiversity highly threatened. The most representative ecosystems of this region include sandy beaches, rocky shores, seagrass beds, coral reefs, soft bottom...

Duarte,Cleber; Py-Daniel,Lúcia H. Rapp; Deus,Cláudia Pereira de.
Fish assemblages from two sandy beaches in the lower Purus river (Amazonas, Brazil) were compared. Four sampling groups were represented by: day and night samples in sandy beach inside the Reserva Biológica de Abufari (biological reserve) and day and night samples in the Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Piagaçu-Purus (sustainable development reserve). Samples were collected during low water levels (November) in 2007. The fish were sampled by means of seines with mesh size of 5 mm between opposing knots, 11 m long and 6 m wide. A total of 112 fish species belonging to nine orders and 27 families was captured. The vast majority of the dominant forms consisted of small fishes (< 100 mm SL) or juveniles. Samples collected in Abufari at night presented...

Benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators of water quality in an Atlantic forest fragment Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oliveira,Augusto; Callisto,Marcos.
The objective of this study was to evaluate benthic macroinvertebrate communities as bioindicators of water quality in five streams located in the "Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural" (RPPN) Mata Samuel de Paula and its surroundings, in the municipality of Nova Lima near the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, southeastern Brazil. This region has been strongly modified by human activities including mining and urbanization. Samples were collected in the field every three months between August 2004 and November 2005, totaling six samplings in the rainy and dry seasons. This assessment identified one area ecologically altered while the other sampling sites were found to be minimally disturbed systems, with well-preserved ecological conditions....

INTRODUCTION: The Dover Strait (Figure 1) connects the North Sea to the English Channel. Here, northern France and South-East England are at their closest. This narrow corridor, one of the world's busiest straits for maritime shipping, is a key economic area for numerous activities, such as leisure and tourism, international ports and shipping, plus the exploitation of living or abiotic marine resources. This area is a significant resource for fisheries because many commercial fish species are abundant there, but also because of the presence of nursery and spawning areas and migratory routes linked to specific environmental characteristics. The vulnerability of these resources, which are subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures, has brought together...

Economic Constraints to the Management of Marine Protected Areas OceanDocs
Tessema, Y.; Emerton, L..
Eastern Africa contains an extensive network of marine protected areas (MPAs), stretching from the Red Sea states of Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti, along the Indian Ocean coastline of Somaliland, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, and out to the Indian Ocean islands of Seychelles, Comoros, Réunion, Mauritius and Madagascar. Most of these MPAs have been gazetted because they contain species or habitats of particular interest, importance or conservation concern that are under threat in some way. The main threats to Eastern Africa’s MPAs arise from human economic activities. These include over-fishing and destructive fishing techniques (such as poison fishing, dynamite fishing and the use of small-mesh nets), the over-harvesting of other marine products...

A New Methodology for Assessing the Effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas OceanDocs
Angulo-Valdés, J.A.; Hatcher, B.G..

Community Participation in the Planning and Management of Marine Protected Areas: A Study Of Kenya and the Philippines OceanDocs
Ole-MoiYoi, L.K..
For countless centuries, fishing-dependent indigenous communities have protected their marine environments from over-exploitation. Understanding that proper conservation guaranteed food for future generations, many of these communities fished only during certain times of the year, or divided up fishing grounds based on familial ties. However, as these communities lost water rights following the formation of certain nation-states, and international fishing fleets moved into the world’s oceans, a need arose to devise new techniques for protecting marine environments. Not only is this protection necessary to maintain biodiversity, but also to guarantee food security and the cultural traditions of fishing villages around the world. In 1957, British biologists...

State of the World's Protected Areas at the End of the Twentieth Century OceanDocs
Green, M.J.B.; Paine, J..
Protected areas are widely held to be among the most effective means of conserving biological diversity in situ (McNeely and Miller, 1984; MacKinnon et al., 1986; Leader-Williams et al., 1990). A considerable amount of resources has been invested in their establishment over the last century or more, with the result that most countries have established or, at least, planned national systems of protected areas. The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent of the world's protected areas globally and regionally and to consider other options for its further strengthening and development during the twenty-first century.

Factors Influencing the Sustainability of Resource Use and Management Within Multiple Use Marine Protected Areas OceanDocs
Senaratna, S..
Multiple Use Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have emerged as an important mechanism in the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. This study investigates whether there are common factors that enhance or constrain the sustainability of resource use and management within the MPAs. A comparative analysis of resource use patterns and associated socio-economic, socio-political, and institutional factors was carried out in four MPAs: Hikkaduwa Nature Reserve (Sri Lanka), Mafia Island Marine Park (Tanzania), Hon Mun Marine Protected Area (Vietnam), and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (Australia). In this investigation a simple analytic framework was used. This was broadly based on a framework developed by the Sustainable Use Specialist Group...
