CEREALICOLTURA BIOLOGICA: INTERVENTI AGROTECNICI E GENETICI PER IL MIGLIORAMENTO QUANTI-QUALITATIVO DEL FRUMENTO DURO E TENERO E LA VALORIZZAZIONE DEI PRODOTTI DERIVATI Organic Eprints
In order to guarantee a suitable income to the farmers and respond to the consumers’ demand, European Commission has proposed new guidelines for the cultivation of cereals. Such proposal strictly depends on: previous decisions of the Community which didn’t give the expected results; the presence of new exporting countries on the international market; the variable cereal production of the last years. Being the new guidelines involving further economic sacrifices of the cereal farmers this project would become essential to recover a strong competitiveness on the international cereals' market. The competitiveness of cereal sector can be increased by innovative high quality varieties and the set up of suitable cultural techniques maximizing the germoplasm...

Innenbrand und Mineralstoffgehalte verschiedener Sorten Eis- und Kopfsalat aus biologisch-dynamischem Anbau Organic Eprints
Hagel, Dr. Ingo; Haneklaus, Prof. Dr. Silvia; Schnug, Prof. Dr. Ewald.
Im Salatkopf können die Blattränder Nekrosen (sog. Innenbrand) aufweisen.

Towards Improved Quality in Organic Food Production Organic Eprints
From 21 to 23 January 2009 the fifth QLIF training and exchange workshop took place. Inspired by the theme “Towards improved quality in organic food production” a group of 20 participants and 11 lecturers had intensive days with lectures, discussion, exchange and some practical experience in research set-up and taste experiments. Fifteen nationalities exchanged their experiences in research in product quality. Many results from comparative studies between conventional and organic products were presented and discussed. In some presentations more emphasis was laid on exploring the mechanism behind the presence or absence of certain health-influencing plant components. Comparative studies will be continued, but exploring the mechanisms behind found...

Effect of organic and conventional crop production systems on food quality and safety Organic Eprints
Schmidt, Dr. Christoph S; Lueck, Dr. Lorna; Shotton, Peter; Seal, Dr. Chris J; Brandt, Dr. Kirsten; Leifert, Prof. Carlo.
A range of comparative studies have recently been carried out to compare the composition of foods produced in organic, “low input” and conventional production systems. This paper will review the currently available information on nutritional differences between organic and non-organic crops. It will also describe the Nafferton Factorial Systems Experiment which was established as part of the IP Quality-LowInputFood to study the effect (and interactions between) (a) rotational design, (b) fertility management and (c) crop protection regimes on crop quality and safety.

Weibel, Franco P.; Treutter, Dieter; Graf, Ursula; Häseli, Andi.
In a 3 years lasting field study with the ‘Golden Delicious’ cultivar, we compared fruits of 5 pairs of organic/integrated fruit farms. The orchards were similar in microclimate, soil conditions and planting system. To assess inner fruit quality we investigated at the beginning and at the end of cold storage: (i) standard parameters (firmness, sugar, malic acid., mineral content); (ii) sensorial quality by panel tests; (iii) health related components (23 phenolic compounds, nutritional fibres; vitamins); and (v) fruit «vitality quality» by holistic approaches (crystallisation in copper chloride, self degradation tests, feeding preference tests with laboratory rats). The most significant differences were found in year one of the study, and were by tendency...

Quality Assessment of Summer and Autumn Carrots from a Biodynamic Breeding Project and Correlations of Physico-Chemical Parameters and Features determined by Picture Forming Methods Organic Eprints
Hagel, Ingo; Bauer, Dieter; Haneklaus, Silvia; Schnug, Ewald.
Assessment of product quality is of special significance in organic farming and includes the supervision of crop quality in different growing systems and the characterisation of different cultivars. Several methods have been developed and applied for this purpose, e.g., the physico-chemical analysis of crops, picture forming methods (PFMs) and plant observation. So far only limited information is available on the com-parability of these methods. This contribution aims to compare the results of the analysis of physico-chemical parameters of summer and autumn carrots with features determined by PFMs by means of correlation analysis. High and significant correlation coefficients were found between quality parameters of summer and autumn carrots from a...

Micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography—Synchronous monitoring of substrate and products in the myrosinase catalysed hydrolysis of glucosinolates Organic Eprints
Bellostas, Natalia; Sorensen, Jens Christian; Sorensen, Hilmer.
A micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) method has been developed for monitoring the myrosinase catalysed hydrolysis of 2-hydroxy substituted glucosinolates and the simultaneous formation of the corresponding degradation products (oxazolidine-2-thiones (OZTs) and nitriles). Glucosibarin ((2R)-2-hydroxy-2-phenylethylglucosinolate) was chosen as the model glucosinolate owing to the difficulties in determining hydrolysis rates of this type of substrates in traditional UV-assays. The method was afterwards validated with glucobarbarin ((2S)-2-hydroxy-2-phenylethylglucosinolate) and progoitrin ((2R)-2-hydroxybut-3-enylglucosinolate). Aromatic glucosinolates without a 2-hydroxy group in their side chains, such as glucotropaeolin...

Biogramm und Qualitätskennzahl Organic Eprints
Velimirov, Alberta.
The quality assessment and comparison of differently cultivated products still represents a problem. On the one hand “quality” comprises many, mostly target group oriented aspects, necessitating the application of relevant methods, on the other hand the interpretation of diviating results is not easy or suitable to corroborate cultivation dependent quality aspects systematically. Some scientists have already tried to tackle that problem and developed quality indices by integratig different quality parameters (BREDA 1973, HUBER et al. 1988, SCHULZ & KÖPKE 1997). The aim of this presentation is to reach a grafic and numeric interpretation of results obtained from different methods. Although organic quality research corresponds to the holistic...

Organic Eprints
Hagel, I.; Haneklaus, S.; Schnug, E..

The consistently superior quality of carrots from one organic farm in Austria compared with conventional farms Organic Eprints
Velimirov, Alberta.
The aim of this 5 year investigation was to compare quality parameters of differently cultivated carrots of the same cultivar grown in the same region as well as to compare the relevance of different methods of analysis to differentiate between these products. The following quality tests were applied: • Sensory tests (all harvests) • Food preference tests with laboratory rats (all harvests) • Decomposition tests (all harvests) • P-value determination (all harvests) • Single-Photon-Counting (1999) • Chemical analysis of the main components (1998 and 1999) It could be shown that carrots (var. Tarvil) grown using an organic farming method were significantly preferred by humans and laboratory rats, lost significantly less dry matter during...

Penicillium verrucosum occurrence and Ochratoxin A contents in organically cultivated grain with special reference to ancient wheat types and drying practice Organic Eprints
Elmholt, S.; Rasmussen, P.H..
This study addresses the relationship between the ochratoxigenic strains of Penicillium verrucosum and ochratoxin A (OTA) contents in organically cultivated grain. It included 37 combined, non-dried grain samples from farmers with no drying facilities as well as 19 non-dried and 22 dried samples from six farms with on-farm drying facilities (Case studies 1-6). The study focused on the ancient wheat type spelt but also included samples of wheat, rye, barley, oats, triticale, emmer, and einkorn. All 78 samples were analysed for moisture content (MC) and occurrence of P. verrucosum. The latter was assessed by plating non-disinfected kernels on DYSG agar and counting those contaminated by the fungus. Fiftyfive samples were analysed for OTA. Most of the combine...
