The implementation of a crop insurance program is an old requirement of the agricultural sector. After the failure of the National Crop Insurance Company (CNSA), in the period of 1954 through 1966, the federal government started to stimulate the agricultural insurance market. Aiming increase the crop insurance operations the Government approved Law n. 10.823 which subsidize part of the premium paid by farmers. The nature of this work is essentially analytical, such that any quantitative model has been established. Over the years, government risk management tools, such as, Proagro and some private insurance companies have had unsatisfactory financial results suggesting that the current crop insurance model presents signals of decline. This article shows the... |

The development of innovative functional food products is a major trend in today's food industry. The growth of this industry is driven by increased consumer awareness of their own health deficiencies, increased understanding of the possible health benefits of functional foods, development in formulation technologies, a positive regulatory environment and changing consumer demographics and lifestyles. While there has been a proliferation of omega-3 products such as milk, eggs, yogurt, and margarine in the Canadian food market, very little is known about consumers of omega-3 products. In our study we use ACNielsen HomescanTM data combined with ACNielsen Panel TrackTM survey data to develop profiles of omega-3 consumers in Canada. The focus of the study is... |

In 2001 the first Supplemental Survey (SS) was conducted using the panel of the sample households selected for the 1999/2000 Post-Harvest Survey (PHS). All of the sample households in the PHS 99/00 that were found in the sample standard enumeration areas (SEAs) in 2001 were included in the sample for this first SS. The SS04 and SS08 followed this same panel of sample households three and seven years later to provide additional longitudinal data for these households. The main objective of the SS was to provide longitudinal data for the sample... |

farms in Salumber tehsil of Udaipur district during 2008-09. The study has revealed that farm income per family is higher on beneficiary farms as compared to non-beneficiary farms. The progress of crop insurance scheme in Rajasthan has been found positive, as is evidenced through compound and linear growth rates. In the Udaipur district, the progress of crop insurance scheme has been found positive, except the claim passed to the number of farmers and amount of sum insured. At the overall level, the total area insured under the crop insurance programme has been only about 45 per cent of the total cropped area of the beneficiary farms. Use of inputs such as human and bullock labour, seed, manures, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. has been found significantly... |

Binary logit analysis was used to identify the factors influencing adoption of Global Positioning System (GPS) guidance systems by cotton farmers in 11 Mid-south and Southeastern states. Results indicate that adoption was more likely by those who had already adopted other precision-farming practices and had used computers for farm management. In addition, younger and more affluent farmers were more likely to adopt. Farmers with larger farms and with relatively high yields were also more likely to adopt. Education was not a significant factor in a farmer’s decision to adopt GPS guidance systems. |

The Texas Department of Agriculture launched the GO TEXAN marketing promotion program in 1999 to support Texas agricultural and food production. The underlying assumption is that if successful, the program would support directly or indirectly the demand for Texas agricultural production and the well-being of the state’s rural population. This research analyzes responses to an official 2008 survey sent to the GO TEXAN program beneficiaries. Overall, this study suggests that not all activities in the program have a clearly positive impact. Participation in trade shows, retail promotion and media events, and reverse trade missions seem to have a significant effect on sales increase as well as the use of the program logo on promotional items and web sites. The... |

This paper analyses the spatial pattern of the agricultural yield data. Using the spatial statistics, it is possible to estimate some parameters of the semivariogram to study the problem of the systemic risk, which has great implications for the crop insurance program in Brazil. In particular, the “range” parameter was estimated. This parameter measures the distance, in which the spatial correlation tends to zero. For the empirical analysis, county yield data was used provided by IBGE, for soybean and corn, in the state of Paraná, through 1990 and 2002. The results showed that there is spatial dependence in every year analysed, going to zero in relatively long distances (in km). |

Cereal grains are important staple foods in Africa but yields are still too low at 1.5 tons per ha for maize while compared with a global average of 4.5 tons per ha. This can be partly attributed to limited development of commercial seed markets, low use of improved seeds, small and highly fragmented seed markets. Many released varieties are not widely disseminated due to closed national markets dominated by a few international companies and parastatals, and restrictive laws, regulations and policies. Transactions costs within and across national boundaries are high because of differing arrangements across countries. Establishment of common regulatory structures is expected to reduce transactions costs and promote increased trade and hence use of improved... |
