Distribuição espacial das precipitações anuais no Piauí: caracterização e modelos. Infoteca-e

Infoteca-e

Validation of the TOPEX rain algorithm: Comparison with ground-based radar - art. no. 4038 ArchiMer
Mcmillan, A; Quartly, G; Srokosz, M; Tournadre, Jean.
[1] Recently developed algorithms have shown the potential recovery of rainfall information from spaceborne dual-frequency altimeters. Given the long mission achieved with TOPEX and the prospect of several other dual-frequency altimeters, we need to validate the altimetrically derived values so as to foster their integration with rain information from different sensors. Comparison with some alternative climatologies shows the bimonthly means for TOPEX to be low. Rather than apply a bulk correction we investigate individual rain events to understand the cause of TOPEX's underestimation. In this paper we compare TOPEX with near-simultaneous ground-based rain radars based at a number of locations, examining both the detection of rain and the quantitative...

Evaluation des proliferations d'algues vertes sur le littoral breton en juin 1994 ArchiMer
Piriou, Jean-yves; Annezo, Jean-pierre.
During June 1994, 44 beaches with "green-tides" were identified along the coasts of Brittany. Compared to previous years, seaweed amounts accumulated on beaches receiving nitrogen inputs from granitic catchments can be considered stable, contrary to beaches exposed to nutrient fluxes originating from schistous catchments, where an increase of accumulations is observed. This late process can be explained by an increase of nitrogen loadings during periods of heavy rain (late spring 1994) on impervious basement rocks.

Validation of Envisat Rain Detection and Rain Rate Estimates by Comparing With TRMM Data ArchiMer
Tran, N; Tournadre, Jean; Femenias, P.
This letter provides validation results on both Envisat altimeter rain detection flag and rain rate estimates. This assessment was performed based on 18-month collocated data sets between Envisat with two sensor measurements from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, i.e., the microwave imager and the precipitation radar. Along with the comparison between closest sensor measurements with strict spatial and temporal criteria, discussion is also provided on environmental context insight when interpreting comparison results based on collocated data.

Impact of rain cell on scatterometer data: 1. Theory and modeling - art. no. 3225 ArchiMer
Tournadre, Jean; Quilfen, Yves.
[1] The two scatterometers currently in operation, the Ku-band NASA Seawinds on the QuikScat satellite and the C-band AMI-Wind on the ERS-2 satellite, are designed to infer the ocean wind vectors from sea surface radar backscatter measurements. They provide excellent coverage of the ocean, and their wind products are of great value for ocean and meteorological communities. However, the presence of rain within scatterometer cells can significantly modify the sea surface backscatter coefficient and hence alter the wind vector retrieval. These perturbations can hamper the analysis of wind fields within atmospheric low-pressure systems or tropical cyclones. Rain perturbations result from volume scattering and attenuation by raindrops in the atmosphere as well...

Impact of rain cell on scatterometer data: 2. Correction of Seawinds measured backscatter and wind and rain flagging ArchiMer
Tournadre, Jean; Quilfen, Yves.
In October and early November 1999, the GOGP99 experiment collected hydrological, currentmeter, tide recorder, thermistor and drifting buoy data near the Strait of Hormuz. Data analysis provides the water mass structure in the Strait: Persian Gulf Water (PGW) core is banked against the Omani coast, while Indian Ocean Surface Water (IOSW) lies near the Iranian coast. These water masses are most often covered by a homogeneous surface layer. Thermohaline characteristics of the PGW core decrease substantially downstream, from the Persian/Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. PGW and IOSW thermohaline characteristics and distribution also exhibit notable changes at periods shorter than a month as shown by repeated hydrological sections. The tidal signal measured...

Characterization of North Sea aerosols by individual particle analyses OMA
Bruynseels, F.; Storms, H.; Van Grieken, R.; Van der Auwera, L..
On aerosol and rain water samples, collected in the Southern Bight of the North Sea, single particle analyses were performed using both laser microprobe mass analysis and electron-probe X-ray microanalysis in combination with an automated image analysis system. In the aerosols collected from an air mass that had traveled from the Atlantic Ocean along the coast of North France, pure seasalt constituted the most abundant particle type, while aluminosilicates (mostly spherical fly-ash particles) amounted to about 20% and mixed seasalt/aluminosilicates, carbonaceous particles, CaSO4 and spherical iron oxides contributed each 5-10%. In air masses that had a longer residence time over the continent, spherical iron oxides, carbonaceous...

Impacts of climate change on water resources and agriculture in Sri Lanka: a review and preliminary vulnerability mapping AgEcon
Eriyagama, Nishadi; Smakhtin, Vladimir U.; Chandrapala, Lalith; Fernando, Karin.
There is ample evidence to suggest that Sri Lanka’s climate has already changed. However, the bigger question of national importance is what Sri Lanka’s climate will look like in 50 or 100 years and how prepared the country is to face such changes. This report reviews the status of climate change (CC) research/activities in Sri Lanka in terms of observed and projected climatic changes, their impacts on water resources and agriculture, CC mitigation and adaptation, and research needs. The study also developed a pilot level CC Vulnerability Index, which was subsequently mapped at district level. The maps indicate that typical farming districts such as Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala, Ratnapura and Anuradhapura are the most vulnerable to CC due to their...
