Galvan, D.E..
This study describes the structure and seasonal dynamics of the reef fish assemblages that inhabit the Nuevo and San José gulfs of the Argentine coast. It analyzes relationships between the structure of the assemblage and several habitat variables, with emphasis on shelter availability and refuge characteristics. The diets and feeding strategies of the most conspicuous fish species are described and their impact on the density of one of their preys is evaluated. The northern Patagonian gulfs are in a temperate region (41° – 43° Lat. S) and are characterized by large extensions of sandy bottoms scattered by patches of rocky outcrops that form reefs. The fish assemblage associated to these reefs is low in species richness and has components of the...

Coral reef fish assemblages of Baie Ternay National Marine Park and Baie Beau Vallon, Mahé, Seychelles OceanDocs
Pittman, S.J..
The two most important foreign exchange earning activities in the Seychelles are tourism and fisheries and therefore, the coastal areas and their management are of the greatest importance to the Seychelles government (Khadun, 1991). In recent years government policy has encouraged marine conservation (Procter, 1970; 1984-1989 National Development Plan) and is part way to fulfilling the programme outlined in the Environmental Management Plan of the Seychelles (EMPS, 1990-2000). To date, five marine areas have been designated as national marine parks covering about 23 000 ha with several more proposed parks and protected areas. However, financial constraints, a deficit of qualified personnel, lack of boundary delimitation, inadequate legislation and...

Catálogo de peces cubanos OceanDocs
Duarte-Bello, Pedro Pablo.
Las otras obras que han servido de base son: "Fishes of North and Middle America", Jordan & Evermann, 1896-1900, abreviado en el texto JEC "Check List of Fishes and Fish like Vertebrates of North and Middle America", Jordan, Evermann & Clark, 1928, abreviado JEC; y los dos vo lumenes publicados de "Fishes of the Western North Atlantic", Partes I y 11, Bigelow & Schroeder, 1948 y 1953, abreviado BS.

Reyes Nivia, M. C.; Rodríguez Ramírez, A.; Garzón Ferreira, J..
Five coral reef areas at the Colombian Caribbean were assessed between 1998 and 2003 through the “National Coral Reef Monitoring System of Colombia” (SIMAC), recording 198 species of fishes. The highest species number was observed in Chengue bay (149), including four new records for the Santa Marta area. At San Andrés Island, 138 species were identified, with nine new records for the Archipelago. At the Rosario Island, 128 species were recorded with eight new records, while 114 species and 12 new records were observed at San Bernardo Islands. Of the 119 fish species recorded at the Urabá area, 48 are reported for the first time.

Olaya-Restrepo, J.; Reyes-Nivia, M.C.; Rodríguez-Ramírez, A..

Garzón-Ferreira, J..
The yellowcheek wrasse Haliocheres cyanocephalus (Bloch) is registred by the first time for the Colombian Caribbean. In spite of extensive diving in most reef areas of Colombia since 1980, H. cyanocephalus was observed only in four occasions at the Tayrona Natural Park, the Urabá area, and San Andrés islands. The fish is known to occur in deep waters but in Colombia it was found only in shallow (7-15 m in depth)reef environments. Eight species of the genus Halichoeres are now known from the Colombian Caribbean.

A Review on the Ecology, Exploitation and Conservation of Reef Fish Resources in Mozambique OceanDocs
Pereira, M.A.M..
Coral and rocky reefs are very important ecosystems in terms of their diversity, productivity, abundance and beauty. Mozambique possesses extensive reef areas, where fish fauna is the main exploited resource. Nevertheless, the ecology of these resources is little studied. A recent report listed 794 reef-associated fishes known to occur in Mozambican coral and rocky reefs. This is a first accountancy of the high fish diversity of Mozambican reefs, which must be assessed. Reef-associated fish resources exploitation is conducted at three basic levels: (i) subsistence (artisanal fishery); (ii) commercial exploitation (semi-industrial reef fishery, ornamental fish trade and recreational diving); and (iii) sports fishing. Presently, the artisanal fishery is the...

Irigoyen, A.J..
This study investigates the impact of Undaria pinnatifida on the reef fish assemblage associated with the coastal rocky reefs of Golfo Nuevo in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Undaria pinnatifida is a laminarian kelp, indigenous to the temperate regions of Japan, China and Korea. It has spread around the world by international shipping and has also been introduced in some regions for mariculture. Its expansion into the northern Patagonian gulfs and Peninsula Valdes, a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site, may threaten eco-tourism activities that depend on local biodiversity and the esthetic quality of the ecosystem. In particular, there is concern about the impact of Undaria on a variety of recreational activities including diving, angling and spear fishing, which...

Visual Census of the Reef Fishes in the Natural Reserve of the Glorieuses Islands (Western Indian Ocean) OceanDocs
Durville, P.; Chabanet, P.; Quod, J.P..
This paper constitutes the first qualitative study of coral reef fish populations in the archipelago of the Glorieuses Islands (northern Mozambique Channel). Sampling by visual census techniques, at depths between 0 and 15 meters, was carried out at 30 stations spread over the whole reef. Three hundred and thirty-two (332) fish species belonging to 57 families were registered in this way. These relatively high numbers show that isolated coral reef formations, even of small size, can be endowed with a great specific richness of reef ichthyofauna. These results may be explained by an oceanic flow that favours recruitment, a diversified habitat, and low anthropogenic impact.

Triplefin fishes from the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Rojas-Vélez,Stephania; Beltrán-León,Beatriz Susana; Tavera,José.
ABSTRACT The fishes of the family Tripterygidae are commonly known as triplefins because its dorsal fin is divided into three segments. Of the 183 species recognized as valid only 16 are distributed in the eastern Pacific. Two endemic species and only members of the family are found in the FFS Malpelo Island: Axoclinus rubinoffi y Lepidonectes bimaculatus. In this work, additional data are provided on the adults and larvae of the triplefins of the sanctuary. The mean abundances of the larvae were 1,88 individuals/m2 for A. rubinoffi and 0.25 individuals/m2 for L. bimaculatus at the night stations where they were collected, 0.8 and 1.61 km to the west of the island and very close specifically on El Arrecife and La Nevera. The adults were collected around...
