Estimating leaf wetness duration over turfgrass, and in a 'Niagara Rosada' vineyard, in a subtropical environment Scientia Agricola
Lulu,Jorge; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar; Pedro Júnior,Mário José; Pezzopane,José Ricardo Macedo; Blain,Gabriel Constantino.
Leaf wetness duration (LWD) is a key parameter in agrometeorology because it is related to plant disease occurrence. As LWD is seldomly measured in a standard weather station it must be estimated to run warning systems for schedule chemical disease control. The objective of the present study was to estimate LWD over turfgrass considering different models with data from a standard weather station, and to evaluate the correlation between estimated LWD over turfgrass and LWD measured in a 'Niagara Rosada' vineyard, cultivated in a hedgerow training system, in Jundiaí, São Paulo State, Brazil. The wetness sensors inside the vineyard were located at the top of the plants, deployed at an inclination angle of 45º and oriented southwest, with three replications....

Spatial and temporal variability of leaf wetness duration in the State of São Paulo, Brazil Scientia Agricola
Hamada,Emília; Ghini,Raquel; Fernandes,Jeferson Lobato; Pedro Júnior,Mário José; Rossi,Paulo.
One of the main factors influencing the occurrence of plant diseases is the leaf wetness duration (LWD). However, this climatic parameter is not generally and systematically recorded at meteorological stations, and the alternative to obtain an estimate for LWD is the use of mathematical models. The objective of this study was to estimate LWD for the State of São Paulo, on the basis of the number of hours with relative humidity equal to or higher than 90%, and also plot them on a map with help of the Geographical Information System (GIS) tool. Using daily relative humidity data from ten meteorological stations of the State, for six years, adjustment equations were obtained for different LWD periods (hours day-1) (R² from 0.58 to 0.81) and of number of days...

Climatic risk of grape downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) for the State of São Paulo, Brazil Scientia Agricola
Hamada,Emília; Ghini,Raquel; Rossi,Paulo; Pedro Júnior,Mário José; Fernandes,Jeferson Lobato.
Viticulture in Brazil has been growing in importance in recent years. In the State of São Paulo, a significant percentage of the production is basically destined to in natura consumption and, more recently, much effort has been made by institutions to revitalize the viticulture in the State. Among fungal diseases, the downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) is one of the main diseases affecting this crop in Brazil, with extreme damage effects on its production. The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence of the downy mildew on grape under the climatic conditions of the State of São Paulo, based on a mathematical model and using Geographical Information System - GIS tools. The study considered the months from September to April, a period in which...

This study investigated the influences of paddy aging at 60 C and 70% relative humidity for 5 days on pasting properties of rice flours and molecular structures of major constituents in rice grain. The rice cultivars investigated included waxy rice Sanpah-Tawng 1 (SPT1), which contained 1.3% amylose and 8.3% protein. Non-waxy rice paddies; namely Pathum Thani 1 (PTT1), which had 14.1% amylose and 6.7% protein, as well as and Leuang Pratew 123 (LPT123), which contained 28.6% amylose and 9.6% protein, were also investigated. Paddy aging significantly changed the RVA pasting characteristics of rice flour pastes from all cultivars investigated (p<0.05). All aged rice flour pastes had higher final viscosity than that of new rice flour paste. Fourier...

Main objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between climate changes and rice disease s epidemics in Chiangrai and Phayao provinces. The study was conducted at Chiangrai Rice Research Center during the year 2011-2013 by monthly broadcasting two popular rice varieties in the area; Phitsanulok 2 and Sanpatong 1. The experiment was carried out in Split plot in RCB Design with 3 replicates having month as main plot and variety as sub-plot. Disease incidence and severity were evaluated at 3 growth stages i.e. 20, 50 and 90 days after sowing. Concurrently, Disease incidence and severity were recorded for rice diseases in the farmers’ fields of Chiangrai and Phayao provinces having infected at 10 rai and above. Disease data showed that both rice...

Comparison of five commonly used thin-layer moisture transfer models in fitting the re-wetting data of barley CIGR Journal
Basunia, Mohammad Ali.
Five commonly cited thin-layer rewetting models, including Page, Diffusion, Approximate form of diffusion, Exponential, and Polynomial were compared for their abilities to the fit the experimental re-wetting data of barley based on the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean relative error (MRE) of estimate of the measured and simulated moisture contents.  The comparison shows the Page model is the most suitable model (average, RMSE = 0.176% d.b. and MRE = 0.713% d.b.) followed by the Diffusion model (average RMSE = 0.199% d.b. and MRE = 0.862% d.b) to fit the re-wetting experimental data of barley.  The Approximate form of diffusion, the Exponential and the Polynomial models have less fitting ability then the Page and Diffusion models for the entire period...

Development of a photovoltaic driven ventilation system to modified traditional Ethiopian gombisa for on-cobs-maize drying CIGR Journal
Garbaba, Chemeda Abedeta.
Mycotoxin-producing fungal growth commonly reported from traditional maize storage system in southwestern Ethiopia. Un-safe moisture content at loading and non-climatically controlled nature of gombisa results in mycoflora growth and development on maize in storage system. Therefore, this paper was aimed to develop a photovoltaic driven ventilation system fitted to modified gomibsa for natural air in-bin drying of on-cobs-maize and increase the shelf life of the product. Modified gombisa was constructed from locally available materials for the current experiment. An appropriate fan type and size, humidistat set at >70% and two 20 Wp photovoltaic panels were used for ventilation purpose, fan control and power the fan, respectively. In total 1.76 m3 of...

Behavior of a portable solar dryer for pineapple fiber Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Moya,Róger; Solano,Marco.
In Costa Rica, there has been a growing interest to use pineapple fiber from plant, for which current processes need to be improved or new processes need to be developed, with emphasis on drying methods. This work presents the design and evaluation of the behavior of a prototype portable solar dryer in four sites of Costa Rica. The design describes the main parts of the dryer, as well as how they were constructed. The behavior was evaluated according to temperature and relative humidity inside e outside the chamber, and the influence of direct and indirect solar radiation. In order to achieve improved dryer efficiency, a dehumidifier was used to control relative humidity, and a heating system was implemented during the hours of low temperature, low solar...

Efficiency of oxygen: absorbing sachets in different relative humidities and temperatures Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Cruz,Renato Souza; Soares,Nilda de Fátima Ferreira; Andrade,Nélio José de.
The main objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of oxygen - absorbing sachets at relative humidity of 75%, 80% and 85% and different temperatures, 10±2 ºC and 25±2 ºC. The experiment consisted in determining the O2 absorption under these conditions. A sachet was placed in desiccators with an internal air homogenization system. Aliquots of air were removed at pre-established time intervals and analyzed for oxygen content. The results showed that oxygen absorption by the sachet increased as the relative humidity increased for both temperature. Therefore the oxygen - absorbing sachets were most active under 25±2ºC and 85% relative humidity. At ambient condition (25±2ºC/75%RH) the rate of oxygen absorbed was 50 mL/day and 18,5 mL/day for 10±2ºC....
