From the help desk: Kaplan–Meier plots with stsatrisk AgEcon
Linhart, Jean Marie; Pitblado, Jeffrey S.; Hassell, James.
stsatrisk is a wrapper for sts graph that adds a table to a survival plot with at-risk information, making it easy to create graphs that follow the list of recommendations given by Pocock et al. (2002) for Kaplan–Meier plots. We use stsatrisk to create plots in the desired format with the desired information.

Boolean logit and probit in Stata AgEcon
Braumoeller, Bear F..
This paper introduces new statistical models, Boolean logit and probit, that allow researchers to model binary outcomes as the results of Boolean interactions among independent causal processes. Each process (or “causal path”) is modeled as the unobserved outcome in a standard logit or probit equation, and the dependent variable is modeled as the observed product of their Boolean interaction. Up to five causal paths can be modeled, in any combination—A and B and C produce Y, A and (B or [C and D]) produce Y, etc.

A note on the performance measure of conservation auctions AgEcon
Latacz-Lohmann, Uwe; Schilizzi, Steven.
We argue that previous assessments of discriminatory-price conservation auctions may have systematically overestimated their performance relative to uniform-payment schemes due to an inappropriate counterfactual comparison. We demonstrate that the cost curve (and not the bid curve) is the relevant supply curve when a uniform payment is offered and provide a theoretically rigorous counterfactual based on that insight. We estimate that the performance of BushTender may have been overrated by more than 50%.

EMPIRICAL SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR TWO-CONSTRAINT MODELS OF RECREATION DEMAND AgEcon
Larson, Douglas M.; Shaikh, Sabina L..
Theoretical restrictions implied by the two-constraint recreation demand model are developed. The structure necessary to specify empirical models shows that most current models of recreation incorporate time in a manner inconsistent with theory. Results are applicable to all recreationists and are particularly useful to those with endogenous marginal values of time.

Sequence analysis with Stata AgEcon
Brzinsky-Fay, Christian; Kohler, Ulrich; Luniak, Magdalena.
We describe a general strategy to analyze sequence data and introduce SQ-Ados, a bundle of Stata programs implementing the proposed strategy. The programs include several tools for describing and visualizing sequences as well as a Mata library to perform optimal matching using the Needleman–Wunsch algorithm. With these programs Stata becomes the first statistical package to offer a complete set of tools for sequence analysis.

The 24th hour of agricultural research AgEcon
Vida, Adrienn; Baksa, Adrienn.
Economic and social changes occurring in Hungary and all over the world mean new challenges for sciences. This trend goes also for agriculture; globalization, climate change, the increase in population and food demand, and the decrease of land used for food production at the same time cause problems that can be solved by means of sciences. The year 2007 was the beginning of a new era in agriculture and rural development. The financial period of 2007-2013 presents an essentially new situation in the European Union, so agricultural universities, high schools and research institutes, as well as market operators must undertake serious changes. As Hungary is basically an agricultural country; agriculture plays an important role in national economy, therefore...

Applying regression quantiles to farm efficiency estimation AgEcon
Kaditi, Eleni A.; Nitsi, Elisavet I..
This article is concerned with the methodological question of frontier production functions estimation for agriculture, and the appropriateness of regression quantiles, as a useful semi-parametric approach. Better insights are reached using the proposed methodology that provides robust farm efficiency scores estimates. Using the 2007 Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data for Greece, analysis shows that the distribution of efficiency scores is closer to normality when employing regression quantiles, while underestimation of efficiency obtained by other parametric or deterministic methods based on the conditional mean can be avoided. The results further suggest that government support aimed at enhancing farms viability should be directed towards payments...

A MONTE CARLO COMPARISON OF ALTERNATIVE ESTIMATORS OF AUTOCORRELATED SIMULTANEOUS SYSTEMS USING A U.S. PORK SECTOR MODEL AS THE TRUE STRUCTURE AgEcon
Naik, Gopal; Dixon, Bruce L..
Monte Carlo analysis of the performance of alternative estimators of simultaneous system's coefficients in the presence of autocorrelation is performed. The "true" underlying model is an estimated, three-equation, monthly model of the U.S. pork market. Estimators for ex post forecasts are also compared. Multicollinearity is found to be a salient characteristic likely adversely affecting estimator performance. Results show that correcting for autocorrelation is desirable when levels of autocorrelation are high for both parameter accuracy and ex post forecasting. However, the best structural coefficient estimator for high levels of autocorrelation is not necessarily the best estimator for ex post forecasting.

Energianövények szántóföldi termelésének optimalizálása AgEcon
Bedene Szoke, Eva; Mohamed, Zsuzsanna.
--------------------------------------- We have developed a Biomass Production Model (BTM), which is based on linear programming....

The economic viability of Environmental Management Systems: an application of Analytical Hierarchy Process as a methodological tool to rank trade-offs AgEcon
Hussain, Salman; Halpin, Lauran; McVittie, Alistair.
Environmental management systems [EMS] are now a well established management tool in the ‘greening’ of industry. There is a large body of literature on methodological procedures and application strategies for implementing EMS. Associated with this proliferation of ‘how to’ manuals has been a limited discussion of why a firm ought to implement a management tool that inevitably affects the bottom line of profitability. We argue that there has been much less by way of methodologically rigorous and academically objective analysis of the motivation for EMS application. Much of this literature is coined in terms of the potential benefits (social, ethical and financial) with arguably an insufficient emphasis on potential real cost burdens. This arises in part...

FORECASTING FOR AUSTRALIAN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Freebairn, John W..
The paper provides a review of the objectives of forecasts and of the techniques for generating forecasts in the context of agriculture. Forecasts provide information to facilitate decision making. The techniques are evaluated in terms of assumptions about the processes generating the forecast variables, their relative requirements for time, data and other resources, and their relative forecast accuracy. An evaluation of naive, informal model and econometric model forecasts of Australian agricultural commodity prices and production levels is reported.

LEAST SQUARES AND ENTROPY AS PENALTY FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Preckel, Paul V..
Mathematical measures of entropy as defined by Shannon (1948) and Kullback and Leibler (1951) are currently in vogue in the field of econometrics, primarily due to the comprehensive work by Golan, Judge, and Miller (1996). In this paper, an alternative interpretation of the entropy measure as a penalty function over deviations is presented. Using this interpretation, a number of parallels are drawn with least squares estimators, and it is demonstrated that, with a minor modification of the traditional least squares estimator, both approaches may be applied to the general linear model. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed, and a philosophical approach to the selection of estimation technique is suggested.

Incursion Management: An agent based modeling approach AgEcon
Elliston, Lisa; Yainshet, Alasebu; Hinde, Ray.
An exotic disease incursion management model was developed to estimate the regional economy effects of a potential karnal bunt incursion in south eastern Queensland. By developing an agent based spatial model that integrates the biophysical aspects of the disease incursion with the agricultural production system and the wider regional economy the model can be used to analyse the effectiveness of alternative management strategies for a range of different incursion scenarios. It is also possible to estimate the effectiveness and economic implications of education campaigns to improve the likelihood of detection by farmers in the field or at the silo.

Surveys: What Does One Need to Know More About Them AgEcon
Djunaidi, Harjanto.
The use of surveys as a data collection method gained its popularity in recent years. However, one needs to be aware of the possibility to make measurement errors due to incorrect surveys design. The way how a question is asked and the choice the respondents have to choose from shape the sample space which in turns will affect the expected value, variance and co-variance of a random variable.

Context and the VSL: Evidence from a Stated Preference Study in Italy and the Czech Republic AgEcon
Alberini, Anna; Scasny, Milan.
We report on the results of a survey based on conjoint choice experiments that was specifically designed to investigate the effect of context on the Value of a Statistical Life (VSL), an important input into the calculation of the mortality benefits of environmental policies that reduce premature mortality. We define “context” broadly to include i) the cause of death (respiratory illness, cancer, road traffic accident), ii) the beneficiary of the risk reduction (adult v. child), and iii) the mode of provision of the risk reduction (public program v. private good). The survey was conducted following similar protocols in Italy and the Czech Republic. When do not distinguish for the cause of death, child and adult VSL are not significantly different from one...
