Monte Carlo analysis of the performance of alternative estimators of simultaneous system's coefficients in the presence of autocorrelation is performed. The "true" underlying model is an estimated, three-equation, monthly model of the U.S. pork market. Estimators for ex post forecasts are also compared. Multicollinearity is found to be a salient characteristic likely adversely affecting estimator performance. Results show that correcting for autocorrelation is desirable when levels of autocorrelation are high for both parameter accuracy and ex post forecasting. However, the best structural coefficient estimator for high levels of autocorrelation is not necessarily the best estimator for ex post forecasting. |

--------------------------------------- We have developed a Biomass Production Model (BTM), which is based on linear programming.... |

Environmental management systems [EMS] are now a well established management tool in the ‘greening’ of industry. There is a large body of literature on methodological procedures and application strategies for implementing EMS. Associated with this proliferation of ‘how to’ manuals has been a limited discussion of why a firm ought to implement a management tool that inevitably affects the bottom line of profitability. We argue that there has been much less by way of methodologically rigorous and academically objective analysis of the motivation for EMS application. Much of this literature is coined in terms of the potential benefits (social, ethical and financial) with arguably an insufficient emphasis on potential real cost burdens. This arises in part... |

The paper provides a review of the objectives of forecasts and of the techniques for generating forecasts in the context of agriculture. Forecasts provide information to facilitate decision making. The techniques are evaluated in terms of assumptions about the processes generating the forecast variables, their relative requirements for time, data and other resources, and their relative forecast accuracy. An evaluation of naive, informal model and econometric model forecasts of Australian agricultural commodity prices and production levels is reported. |

Mathematical measures of entropy as defined by Shannon (1948) and Kullback and Leibler (1951) are currently in vogue in the field of econometrics, primarily due to the comprehensive work by Golan, Judge, and Miller (1996). In this paper, an alternative interpretation of the entropy measure as a penalty function over deviations is presented. Using this interpretation, a number of parallels are drawn with least squares estimators, and it is demonstrated that, with a minor modification of the traditional least squares estimator, both approaches may be applied to the general linear model. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed, and a philosophical approach to the selection of estimation technique is suggested. |

An exotic disease incursion management model was developed to estimate the regional economy effects of a potential karnal bunt incursion in south eastern Queensland. By developing an agent based spatial model that integrates the biophysical aspects of the disease incursion with the agricultural production system and the wider regional economy the model can be used to analyse the effectiveness of alternative management strategies for a range of different incursion scenarios. It is also possible to estimate the effectiveness and economic implications of education campaigns to improve the likelihood of detection by farmers in the field or at the silo. |
