Zukunftsmodell Schweiz - eine Landwirtschaft ohne Gentechnik? Organic Eprints
Brunner, Thomas; Nowack, Karin; Tamm, Lucius; Tappeser, Beatrix; Eckelkamp, Claudia; Weber, Barbara; Köchlin, Florianne; Vogel, Benno.
Denn Gentech-food ist out, in ganz Europa.

Trading Opportunities for Organic Food Products from developing Countires - Strengthening Research and Policy-making capacity on Trade and Environment in Developing Countries Organic Eprints
Since 1999, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Foundation for International Environment Law and Development (FIELD), with the support of the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), have assisted developing countries in strengthening their research and policy-making capacity with regard to trade and environment issues. Among the priority issues selected by beneficiary countries to be addressed under this programme has been the identification of opportunities for increased exports of organic agricultural products. I believe there are good reasons for this. As several of the papers in this volume indicate, a significant proportion of agricultural land in many developing countries is cultivated by...

Innovation Research in High-Value Commodity Chains: Lessons Learned Organic Eprints
Jensen, Henning Høgh; Odhong, Charles; Odwonga, Richard N; Halberg, Niels.
The current paper reports on the main findings emerging from a research alternative to the two dominant paradigms in agricultural development. This alternative is both context-driven and problem-focused on the rapidly developing East African market-oriented agriculture that demonstrates high economic growth rates based on high-value market-driven commodity chains. The approach to this innovative research in high-value chains includes information feedback loops that bring back translated reports regarding market requirements, retailers’ requests, tailor made production techniques, etc. These reports include price determining information like preferences for certain quality attributes such as colour, size, and texture in addition to extrinsic quality...

Researching the future Organic Eprints
Browning, Helen.
The author, a recent Chair of the Soil Association and an organic farmer, examines the relationship between the research community and farmers, and argues for publicly funded, radical 'pioneering research' which will increase the sustainability of organic farming and deliver greater benefits. This will require genuine collaboration between researchers, farmers and the public.

An approach to include soil carbon changes in life cycle assessments Organic Eprints
Petersen, B.M.; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Hermansen, J.E.; Halberg, Niels.
Globally, soil carbon sequestration is expected to hold a major potential to mitigate agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. However, the majority of life cycle assessments (LCA) of agricultural products have not included possible changes in soil carbon sequestration. In the present study, a method to estimate carbon sequestration to be included in LCA is suggested and applied to two examples where the inclusion of carbon sequestration is especially relevant: 1) Bioenergy: removal of straw from a Danish soil for energy purposes and 2) Organic versus conventional farming: comparative study of soybean production in China. The suggested approach considers the time of the soil CO2 emissions for the LCA by including the Bern Carbon Cycle Model. Time...

Evaluating Research beyond Scientific Impact - How to Include Criteria for Productive Interactions and Impact on Practice and Society Organic Eprints
Wolf, Birge; Lindenthal, Thomas; Szerencsits, Manfred; Holbrook, J. Britt; Heß, Jürgen.
Currently, established research evaluation focuses on scientific impact – that is, the impact of research on science itself. We discuss extending research evaluation to cover productive interactions and the impact of research on practice and society. The results are based on interviews with scientists from (organic) agriculture and a review of the literature on broader/social/societal impact assessment and the evaluation of interdisciplinary and ransdisciplinary research. There is broad agreement about what activities and impacts of research are relevant for such an evaluation. However, the extension of research evaluation is hampered by a lack of easily usable data. To reduce the effort involved in data collection, the usability of existing documentation...

Evaluating trust in organic quality marks: a network approach using laddering data Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Dr Danilo; Naspetti, Dr Simona.
A low level of information affects trust in organic quality in Italy. Since organic brands and labels credibility, depends on trust relationships that consumers perceive, it is crucial to understand which kind of relations are more relevant and which of them could have a positive or negative effect in the long-term. The purpose of this study is to examine trust relationship related to buying organic products, to better understand the consumer decision-making process and trust-builders inside the organic channel, using an innovative network approach based on laddering analysis.

Evaluation of sustainability in farm and wastewater systems – decision theoretical applications Organic Eprints
Refsgaard, Ph. D. Karen.
The position taken in this study is that long run sustainability is a complex and context dependent concept, implying that the estimation of value depends on the issues at stake, the decision actors involved and the criteria being emphasised. Sustainability connects the economic process explicitly to the natural environment and the study elucidates how thermodynamics can supplement, although not substitute economic analyses. Both natural and social systems are multidimensional and changes are difficult to assess in a simple, one-dimensional way. The standard assumptions in many decision methods concerning rationality are thus hardly adequate. The empirical focus is on agricultural production and wastewater handling and in four papers decision...

Global Vision and Strategy for Organic Farming Research Organic Eprints
Andres, Christian.
The Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM (TIPI) has developed a vision and strategy for organic farming research to advance organic agriculture through research, development, innovation and technology transfer. TIPI's vision and strategy was finalized in February 2016. TIPI’s vision recognizes that current technologies based on heavy use of external inputs that are toxic, pollute the environment and are very energy-intensive come at a price. Investments in ecosystem services and the development of technologies that are productive, stable, adaptable, resilient, and fairly shared are much more likely to sustain the world’s population in a rapidly changing environment. Sustainable pathways to innovation will require engagement of all stakeholders in a...

Organic Eprints - spiren til succes Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A..

Research for transition: Europeans deserve a better agricultural and food policy Organic Eprints
Barret, Philippe; Marq, Pascal; Mayer, Carolin; Padel, Susanne.
Research is a key element in the exploration of new pathways in farming systems. Organic farming relies on specific methods and a strict regulation. By design, organic farming harmonizes the environmental and productive dimensions of farming systems. The report covers four sections. 1. Funding of organic farming research is low both at EU and national levels, but at the EU and national levels, statistics on the financial support to the different models of agriculture are neither precise nor comprehensive. This lack of transparency impairs any comparative analysis. 2. Several countries have specific programmes for organic farming research The total amounts of money are limited but in most cases the programmes are multi-annual and help to build long-term...

Research and development strategy 2012 in Organic farming and food "Growth, credibility and resilient systems" Organic Eprints
This new overarching research and development strategy has been prepared by the programme committee at ICROFS in 2012. It describes the areas where a research effort would benefit the industry and also its importance to society. Research and development strategy 2012 is the result of a long hearing process, where stakeholders within and associated with the organic sector were given the opportunity to present their views on existing development potentials and barriers and where research and development activities will be able to make a difference. It has led to hoth new ideas and greater visions, which the sector believes are essential to ensure leaps in knowledge and development. The process has also uncovered very specific barriers and problems that...

The Future of Organic Agriculture: Otopia or Oblivion? Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Organic agriculture could feed the world, but will it? A state of Otopia, an organic Utopia of 100% organic food and organic agriculture, is a dream, or is it a pipe-dream? And if a dream, then when might it manifest? Two scenarios are presented, extrapolating from the rate of growth of the organics sector achieved over the past decade. Under a geometric rate of growth, Otopia could be achieved in 39 years, whereas under an arithmetic rate of growth, Otopia would take 544 years to be achieved.

Ecosystem properties and principles of living systems as foundation for sustainable agriculture – Critical reviews of environmental assessment tools, key findings and questions from a course process Organic Eprints
Ekbladh, G.; Grönlund, E.; Ingemarson, F.; Karlsson, L.; Nilsson, S.; Strid Eriksson, I..
With increasing demands on limited resources worldwide, there is a growing interest in sustainable patterns of utilisation and production. Ecological agriculture is a response to these concerns. To assess progress and compliance, standard and comprehensive measures of resource requirements, impacts and agro-ecological health are needed. Assessment tools should also be rapid, standardized, userfriendly, meaningful to public policy and applicable to management. Fully considering these requirements confounds the development of integrated methods. Currently, there are many methodologies for monitoring performance, each with its own foundations, assumptions, goals, and outcomes, dependent upon agency agenda or academic orientation. Clearly, a concept of...

Samfundsvidenskabelig bæredygtighedsteori Organic Eprints
Kjeldsen, Chris.
