Management of Water Reservoirs (Embungs) in West Timor, Indonesia AgEcon
Pradhan, Deepa; Ancev, Tihomir; Drynan, Ross G.; Harris, Michael.
Communal water storage reservoirs (embungs) that serve many villages in West Timor, Indonesia, by providing water during the prolonged annual dry season are experiencing severe sedimentation problems. Sedimentation of reservoirs progressively reduces their water storage capacity and the benefits to community. This paper investigates four alternative strategies for managing the sedimentation of a typical village embung: (1) current management (a “no management” situation), (2) soil conservation in the embung catchment, (3) periodic sediment removal and (4) both soil conservation and sediment removal. Without periodic sediment removal, an embung has a finite life dependent on the rate of sedimentation. The results indicate that periodic cleaning is clearly...

Presence of antibodies against H5, H7 and H9 influenza A virus in wild birds in the State of São Paulo, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Sousa,E de; Costa,T P; Werther,K; Durigon,EL; Araujo,J de; Ferreira,CS; Pinto,AA.
Although the natural reservoirs of the avian influenza (AI) virus have been extensively studied in many countries, there is a clear lack of information on this subject in South America, particularly in Brazil. The objective of this study was to conduct a serological survey for H5, H7 and H9 antibodies to AI-subtype viruses in wild birds in the state of São Paulo , Brazil. Serum samples were tested using the hemagglutination-inhibition assay. Out of the 31 wild birds sampled between January and December of 2006, seven (22.58%), were seropositive for H5, H7 and H9; four (12.90%) were seropositive for H5 and H7; 13 (41.94%), were seropositive only for H7; three (9.7%), were seropositive only for H9; and four (12.90%) were negative for all three hemagglutinin...

Newcastle disease virus infection in sparrows (Passer domesticus, Linneaus, 1758) captured in poultry farms of the agreste region of the State of Pernambuco Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Silva,JSA; Mota,RA; Vilela,SMO; Doretto Júnior,L; Pinheiro Júnior,JW; Silva,LBG.
Reservoir competence for the Newcastle Disease virus (NDV) was evaluated in sparrows (Passer domesticus, Linnaeus 1758) captured on a commercial poultry farm and a chicken hatchery in the State of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. A total number of 103 birds collected from a poultry farm (24/103) and a chicken hatchery (79/103) were examined. Hemagglutination inhibition tests, isolation, and viral characterization were performed in all samples collected from each bird. Titers ranging from 1:2 to 1:64 were detectable in 10.68% of sparrows, but positive serology and viral isolation were obtained only from sparrows captured at the hatchery. Hemagglutination activity was inhibited by anti-avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 (APMV-1) serum, and this sample showed an...

SIMULATION OF BIOMASS DYNAMICS IN PLANKTON OF A HIGH-ALTITUDE ANDEAN TROPICAL RESERVOIR IN COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
PARRA-GARCÍA,Edison Andrés; RIVERA-PARRA,Nicole; RODRÍGUEZ,Boris A; HOYOS RINCÓN,Isabel Cristina.
ABSTRACT The understanding of the relationships between the planktonic communities in a reservoir allows us to infer possible changes in the redistribution of matter and energy flows in these systems. This work proposes a dynamic model for the trophic network of the Riogrande II tropical reservoir, which integrates the planktonic trophic chains of detritus and grazing, limiting the prey-predator interactions by introducing the prey meeting factor (pmf). We built a dynamic model of mass balance supported by an extensive bibliographic search. The limitations of consumers and resources were represented simultaneously by means of the pmf. The data used to validate the model were compiled from previous investigations carried out in this reservoir from 2010 to...

Phytoplankton of two rivers in the eastern Amazon: characterization of biodiversity and new occurrences Acta Botanica
Cunha,Elane Domênica de Souza; Cunha,Alan Cavalcanti da; Silveira Jr,Arialdo Martins da; Faustino,Silvia Maria Mathes.
During the various hydrological periods in 2011, we studied the phytoplankton along an 87-km stretch of the Araguari and Falsino rivers, which are located in the eastern Brazilian Amazon, in the state of Amapá, Brazil, the most ecologically preserved state in the country. In the study area, the aquatic ecosystem is under pressure from human activities such as, mining, hydroelectric power generation and urbanization, which contrast with the surrounding areas that are designated for biodiversity conservation. The aim of this study was to characterize the composition, frequency and richness of algae species and also to identify spatial-temporal patterns of taxa distribution. During the study period, we identified 185 taxa (136 species in 49 genera). The...

Relationship between phytoplankton structure and environmental variables in tropical reservoirs with different trophic states Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Simone Alves de; Ferragut,Carla; Bicudo,Carlos Eduardo de Mattos.
ABSTRACT Phytoplankton structure is influenced by environmental factors, seasonal cycles and the trophic state of the system. The objective of the present study was to identify guilds of phytoplankton species that are representative of seasonality and trophic status. We evaluated phytoplankton biomass and species composition in five tropical reservoirs, with different trophic states and during rainy and dry periods. At most of the sampling sites, total biomass was higher during the rainy season. Moreover, high cyanobacterial biomass was observed in all reservoirs except for one of the mesotrophic reservoirs, which had no significant contribution from the group. Phytoplankton guilds associated with the trophic gradient and seasonality were identified....

Changes in diet of a neotropical cichlid in response to river damming Biological Sciences
Jorge, Monica Bueno; Vilela, Maria José Alencar; Suarez, Yzel Rondon; Lima Junior, Sidnei Eduardo.
Changes in diet of Laetacara araguaiae Ottoni and Costa, 2009 were evaluated in the Sucuriú River (Upper Paraná basin, Brazil) in an area with a small hydroelectric power plant, both before and after the formation of the reservoir, in order to answer: Did the construction of the reservoir affected the diet of this species? The results showed greater change of diet composition in the upstream section of the reservoir. It was observed that before the formation of the reservoir and the first year after, the individuals from upstream section formed a group characterized by an insectivorous diet. With the dam construction and habitat change we observed that aquatic plant material, sediment, and algae predominated in the diet. These results show the...

The goal of this study was to evaluate the concordance amongst three zooplankton groups (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) and between the zooplankton groups and the environmental variables in the Luis Eduardo Magalhães reservoir, in the Mid-Tocantins River, Tocantins State, Brazil. Concordance patterns were found in relation to environmental variables, cladocerans, and rotifers, although values were relatively low. These results indicate that one should be cautious about the use of indicative taxonomic groups to detect environmental changes, where divergent results annul extrapolation possibilities and indicate the existence of distinct environmental factors controlling different groups.

Monitoring studies should consider temporal variability to reveal relations between cyanobacterial abundance and environmental variables Anais da ABC (AABC)
WOJCIECHOWSKI,JULIANA; PADIAL,ANDRÉ A..
One of the main goals of monitoring cyanobacteria blooms in aquatic environments is to reveal the relationship between cyanobacterial abundance and environmental variables. Studies typically correlate data that were simultaneously sampled. However, samplings occur sparsely over time and may not reveal the short-term responses of cyanobacterial abundance to environmental changes. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that stronger cyanobacteria x environment relationships in monitoring are found when the temporal variability of sampling points is incorporated in the statistical analyses. To this end, we investigated relationships between cyanobacteria and seven environmental variables that were sampled twice yearly for three years across 11 reservoirs,...

Stonemeal of amazon soils with sediments from reservoirs: a case study of remineralization of the tucuruí degraded land for agroforest reclamation Anais da ABC (AABC)
THEODORO,SUZI H.; LEONARDOS,OTHON H.; ROCHA,EDUARDO; MACEDO,IRIS; REGO,KLEYSSON G..
This study suggests the employment of accumulated sediments in the reservoir of Tucuruí (Pará /Brazil) to remineralize the surrounding degraded soils. The approach was based on the principles of stonemeal technology. It suggests that the soil can be rejuvenated by crushed rocks rich in macro and micronutrients. Removal of the sediments for agricultural use will bring benefits to family farmers and increase the life cycle of the reservoir and, therefore, energy generation. Geochemical data on retained sediments, soils and rocks in the area of influence of the reservoir were evaluated regarding nutrient transport mechanisms and soil-fertility potential. Results show that sediments from the reservoir contain nutrients levels at least one order of magnitude...

Stable isotopes of carbon (delta13C) and nitrogen (delta15N) were used to describe sources of energy and trophic position for adult Leporinus friderici in the area of the Corumbá Reservoir, Brazil. Samples were collected from April 1999 to March 2000. Spatial variations were not identified in the isotopic composition. The maximum and minimum contribution of C4 plants calculated integrating the variation of plants and fish were 47.7% and 2.4%, respectively. Among C3 plants, periphyton presented closer isotopic values to those observed for fishes, corresponding to an important carbon source. The proportion of ingested plant item is larger in rivers upstream from the reservoir (42.7%), which justifies the smaller trophic level among there. However, in the...
