Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Garnier, Jacqueline; Prioul, Daniel; Heurtebise, Serge; Razet, Daniel.
Different types of pregrowth of the Japanese palourde are compared on the some site. The method by upwelling which is the more common used, to have good growth, requires a compromise between the running and the raised biomass. Two periods are critical, in the summer the growth of mollusks is stopped because of a decrease in the phytoplanktonic production ; in the winter, a fall in temperature lessens filtration and stops growth. The results concern clams consummatation rates of particular food (chlorophyll, protids, lipids, glucids) as weIl as the way to supply the decreasing growth : increase of phytoplankyonic production in the summer by recycling waters from nurseries that are loaded with ammoniac and raise winter temperatures by using under-ground...

Bodoy, Alain; Riva, Alain; Maitre-allain, Thierry.
Measurements of oxygen consumption in the two species Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes phi/ippinarum were perfonned using hatchery-reared juveniles, grown under controlled conditions. The temperature range varied from 10 to 30°C. The linear relations between the logarithms of the dry weight and of the oxygen consumption were calculated for each species. Rates were compared in terms of standardized clam tissue weight calculated from the regression of respiration on tissue weight. Such a technique allows to make comparisons between the species by avoiding any interference from the variations in individual weight. Within this range of temperature, oxygen consumption of R. philippinarum and of R. decussatus exhibit the same variations, with a maximum at...

Caill-milly, Nathalie; Duclercq, Benoit; Morandeau, Gilles.
Between 1980 and 1986, some Arcachon oyster farmers took up breeding the Japanese clam on the foreshore (Robert et Deltreil, 1990). This production was short lived. The steep fall in prices due to economic competition from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia, predator action such as the trigger fish (Popovsky et al., 1999), added to the significant amount of mortality that occurred in the summer and autumn of 1992 that affected two-thirds of the total stock, led to clam farming being abandoned at the end of the 1980s. In the Arcachon basin, the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population, now natural to the area, has found favourable conditions for development and is expanding rapidly there. This species has been supplanting the local species...

Goulletquer, Philippe.
Since 1984, experiments have been carried out on clam Ruditapes philippinarum foreshore culture, with a one year pond pre-growth. Culture conditions are now well-known: population level with a tide coefficient of around 70 to 80, sediment of silty or fine grain size, sediment stability over the culture period-between the end of April and November. This culture possibility gives way to a diversification of production in the shellfish culture basin of Marennes-Oléron and can be used as an alternative to oyster overexploitation. Clam densities (2 kg/m²) are five times lower than oyster and the Ruditapes philippinarum filtration rate is 20% lower than that of Crassostrea gigas.

An infection of Ruditapes decussatus (Bivalvia) by Rickettsia ArchiMer
Mialhe, Eric; Chagot, Dominique; Boulo, Viviane; Comps, Michel; Ruano, Francisco; Grizel, Henri.
The authors report the presence of a Rickettsia in Ruditapes decussatus from natural populations of the Algarve (Portugal). Light microscopic shows infections of varying importance in gill tissues. Some enclose small procaryotic colonies (cp) scattered in all lamellae; in others, the colonies are scarce and hypertrophic (100 mu m). These different pictures suggest an amplification process. Digestive diverticulae may also be infected, but to a lesser extent. The ultrastructural features of this intravacuolar (mvd: densified vacuolar membrane) procaryote (P) and its multiplication by scission without a complex developmental cycle allows its classification in the order Rickettsiales.

Intensive culture of the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) in marine ponds. The impact of rearing densities and feeding levels on growth rates and yields ArchiMer
Baud, Jean-pierre; Haure, Joel; Bodoy, Alain.
Intensive ongrowing (from 28 mm to the commercial size, 35 mm) of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was studied in experimental raceways with a natural bottom of clay. The factors controlled were rearing density (100, 200, and 300 individuals/m2) and food concentration (34.0 and 68.1 µg.1-1 chlorophyll a). Food was produced from a batch culture of Skeletonema costatum in a large volume (50 m3), thanks to the fertile ground and saline water. Best results regarding final size were obtained in the vicinity of the inflow with a densilY of 100 individuals/m2. However it was a density of 300 individuals/m2 which appeared from the following results to be the optimal choice for intensive rearing: the survival rate was 84 %, the final biomass was 4 kg/m2 and...

Stable isotopes changes in the adductor muscle of diseased bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Dang, Cecile; De Montaudouin, X.; Savoye, N.; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Martinez, P.; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
In this article, we show how a disease could bias stable isotope analyzes of trophic networks and propose a strategy in the choice of tissues to be analyzed. In the past few years, a new pathology (brown muscle disease or BMD) affecting the posterior adductor muscle of Ruditapes philippinarum has emerged in Arcachon Bay. BMD induces a necrosis of muscle tissues which become infused by conchiolin and hence calcified. As muscle of mollusks are often used for trophic food webs studies through stable isotopic analyzes, this work investigated the effect of BMD on carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios of anterior and posterior adductor muscles of clams collected in February and August 2007. Infected clams displayed a lower condition index and a posterior adductor...

Bensch, Alexis; Bacher, Cedric; Baud, Jean-pierre; Martin, Jean-louis.
The growth of Ruditapes philippinarum was modeled with an energetic budget equation. Clams were fed with Skeletonema costatum in experimental units during 6 months. The filtration and respiration terms of the budget were depending on the temperature and the dry weight. The spawning effort was represented by an allometric relation derived from the experimental data. The model simulated the individual growth of the dry weight and of the shell converted into energy during the 6 months of the experiment. The results fitted well with the observations until the loss of energy due to the spawning. After that period the model overestimated the growth which was explained by another spawning loss not taken into account in the model and not noticeable with the...

Experimental shift of diet and DIC stable carbon isotopes: Influence on shell delta C-13 values in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Poulain, C.; Lorrain, Anne; Mas, R.; Gillikin, D. P.; Dehairs, F.; Robert, Rene; Paulet, Yves-marie.
The influences of diet and seawater dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) on the carbon isotope composition of shell aragonite (Cinched in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum reared under laboratory conditions were investigated. Clams were exposed to two successive negative carbon isotope shifts: a first shift in diet (delta C-13(phytoplankton)) and a second shift, 35 days later, in DIC (delta C-13(DIC)). Both successive shifts induced a decrease in delta C-13(shell). These results are the first to experimentally confirm an incorporation of respired carbon derived from food and carbon from DIC into shell carbonate of adult bivalves. Skeletal delta C-13 responded to changes in the delta C-13 of both diet and DIC in less than 7 days. Consequently, proxies...

Dang, Cecile.
The Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was introduced into Arcachon Bay at the beginning of the 1980s for aquaculture purposes. It rapidly naturalized in all intertidal flats of the lagoon. Nowadays, Arcachon Bay ranks at the first French place in terms of exploitable stock. However, recent stock assessments have shown an unbalance size structure with a deficit in juvenile and adult clams (> 38 mm shell length). These alarming patterns asked many questions on the sustainability of Manila clam populations within Arcachon Bay and have motivated the present thesis. This study aimed to better understand the population dynamics of this species and also some factors controlling this dynamic. The final objective was to improve the Manila clam fishing...

Goulletquer, Philippe.
For some years, high mortalities on Manila clam's bredding occured at the end of winter on Atlantic coasts. The ecophysiological survey of population was performed using a ground culture technique. This permitted to characterize the conditions related with mortalities such as a loss in dry weight and a decrease of metabolic reserves. A comparison of biochemical composition was conducted during the occurence of mortality on different sites along the Atlantic coast, and in different ecosystems (tidal land, oysters ponds).

Polyploidy in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. II. Chemical induction of tetraploid embryos ArchiMer
Diter, Alain; Dufy, Christian.
Tetraploidy was induced in embryos of Ruditapes philippinarum by treating the eggs with cytochalasin B. (CB). Two treatment times were found to be effective in inducing tetraplidy : 0 to 10 minutes after insemination (before formation of the first polar body) and 45 minutes after insemination (just before the first cleavage). Treatments, started 5 and 45 minutes after insemination, produced 64.4 ± 7.8% and 28.3 ± 2.3% tetraploid embrios, respectively, after 6 hours (on the average over 3 experiments). However, no tetraploids were detected in 4-month-old spat. Sperm entry delayed by the CB could be involved in induction of tetraploidy by early treatment.

Virus-like particles associated with brown muscle disease in Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, in Arcachon Bay (France) ArchiMer
Dang, C.; Gonzalez, P.; Mesmer-dudons, N.; Bonami, J-r; Caill-milly, Nathalie; De Montaudouin, X..
Recently, Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, populations have suffered mortalities in Arcachon Bay (SW France). Mortality was associated with extensive lesions of the posterior adductor muscle, which become progressively brown and calcified. Ultrastructural observations by transmission electron microscopy revealed tissue degradation with necrotized muscle fibres and granulocytomas. Unenveloped virus-like particles (VLPs) were detected in muscle, granulocytic, epithelial and rectal cells. VLPs were abundant in the extracellular space, in the cytoplasm (free or enclosed in vesicles) and in the nucleoplasm of granulocytes. Nuclei and mitochondria of granulocytes displayed changes which suggested reactive oxygen species production and apoptosis induction....

An evaluation of Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and Ba/Ca ratios as environmental proxies in aragonite bivalve shells ArchiMer
Poulain, C.; Gillikin, D. P.; Thebault, Julien; Munaron, Jean-marie; Bohn, M; Robert, Rene; Paulet, Yves-marie; Lorrain, Anne.
The influence of salinity and water chemistry on Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios in the aragonitic shells of the Manila clam were investigated. Clams were reared at constant temperature (20 °C) under different controlled conditions of salinity, commonly encountered in their natural habitat. Clams were held in three tanks with a constant salinity of 35 for the first 35 days and then two tanks were changed to lower salinities (20 and 28) for the next 29 days. Individual shell Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios were studied through time. Despite stable conditions (temperature, salinity, and Mg/Cawater) for clams reared at salinity 35 during the experiment, Mg/Ca shell ratios increased through the time. Moreover the salinity decrease at t35 slowed the increase of...

Methods of gynogenesis, androgenesis and polyploidy induction were developed with the aim of genetic improvement in the rainbow trout, the Pacific oyster, the Manila clam and the black scallop. In the trout: · haploid androgenesis was induced by means of a pressure shock applied on diploid eggs, probably at the time of karyogamy. Diploid androgenetic individuals were directly produced from eggs fertilized with sperm from tetraploid male. · a heat shock treatment effective for suppressing the first egg mitosis was developed. This treatment allows the production of homozygous gynogenetic lines (checked using enzyme electrophoresis technique) from eggs inseminated with ultraviolet irradiated sperm. The treatment also induced tetraploidy in eggs normally...
