Different types of pregrowth of the Japanese palourde are compared on the some site. The method by upwelling which is the more common used, to have good growth, requires a compromise between the running and the raised biomass. Two periods are critical, in the summer the growth of mollusks is stopped because of a decrease in the phytoplanktonic production ; in the winter, a fall in temperature lessens filtration and stops growth. The results concern clams consummatation rates of particular food (chlorophyll, protids, lipids, glucids) as weIl as the way to supply the decreasing growth : increase of phytoplankyonic production in the summer by recycling waters from nurseries that are loaded with ammoniac and raise winter temperatures by using under-ground... |

Between 1980 and 1986, some Arcachon oyster farmers took up breeding the Japanese clam on the foreshore (Robert et Deltreil, 1990). This production was short lived. The steep fall in prices due to economic competition from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia, predator action such as the trigger fish (Popovsky et al., 1999), added to the significant amount of mortality that occurred in the summer and autumn of 1992 that affected two-thirds of the total stock, led to clam farming being abandoned at the end of the 1980s. In the Arcachon basin, the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population, now natural to the area, has found favourable conditions for development and is expanding rapidly there. This species has been supplanting the local species... |

Since 1984, experiments have been carried out on clam Ruditapes philippinarum foreshore culture, with a one year pond pre-growth. Culture conditions are now well-known: population level with a tide coefficient of around 70 to 80, sediment of silty or fine grain size, sediment stability over the culture period-between the end of April and November. This culture possibility gives way to a diversification of production in the shellfish culture basin of Marennes-Oléron and can be used as an alternative to oyster overexploitation. Clam densities (2 kg/m²) are five times lower than oyster and the Ruditapes philippinarum filtration rate is 20% lower than that of Crassostrea gigas. |

The influences of diet and seawater dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) on the carbon isotope composition of shell aragonite (Cinched in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum reared under laboratory conditions were investigated. Clams were exposed to two successive negative carbon isotope shifts: a first shift in diet (delta C-13(phytoplankton)) and a second shift, 35 days later, in DIC (delta C-13(DIC)). Both successive shifts induced a decrease in delta C-13(shell). These results are the first to experimentally confirm an incorporation of respired carbon derived from food and carbon from DIC into shell carbonate of adult bivalves. Skeletal delta C-13 responded to changes in the delta C-13 of both diet and DIC in less than 7 days. Consequently, proxies... |

Recently, Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, populations have suffered mortalities in Arcachon Bay (SW France). Mortality was associated with extensive lesions of the posterior adductor muscle, which become progressively brown and calcified. Ultrastructural observations by transmission electron microscopy revealed tissue degradation with necrotized muscle fibres and granulocytomas. Unenveloped virus-like particles (VLPs) were detected in muscle, granulocytic, epithelial and rectal cells. VLPs were abundant in the extracellular space, in the cytoplasm (free or enclosed in vesicles) and in the nucleoplasm of granulocytes. Nuclei and mitochondria of granulocytes displayed changes which suggested reactive oxygen species production and apoptosis induction.... |

The influence of salinity and water chemistry on Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios in the aragonitic shells of the Manila clam were investigated. Clams were reared at constant temperature (20 °C) under different controlled conditions of salinity, commonly encountered in their natural habitat. Clams were held in three tanks with a constant salinity of 35 for the first 35 days and then two tanks were changed to lower salinities (20 and 28) for the next 29 days. Individual shell Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios were studied through time. Despite stable conditions (temperature, salinity, and Mg/Cawater) for clams reared at salinity 35 during the experiment, Mg/Ca shell ratios increased through the time. Moreover the salinity decrease at t35 slowed the increase of... |
