Ingestive behavior and efficacy of male sheep housed in different stocking densities R. Bras. Zootec.
Costa,Roberto Germano; Ribeiro,Neila Lidiany; Nobre,Priscila Torres; Carvalho,Francisco Fernando Ramos de; Medeiros,Ariosvaldo Nunes de; Martins,Fabrício Ehm.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of housing density on ingestive behavior of male Santa Inês sheep housed individually and in double. Forty non-castrated males were used with an average initial weight of 21.33±2.62 kg and an average age of 120 days. The males were housed in two types of covered stalls: double stalls (two males/stall) of 3.0 m2 and individual stalls of 1.50 m2. Animals housed in individual stalls spent more time ruminating and less time eating than those in double stalls. These animals also spent more time in idleness. Sheep idled approximately 11.43 hours/day (47% of the time), which can be explained by the shorter time spent in rumination, considering that the diet used in this experiment had adequate...

Missio,Regis Luis; Oliveira,Mauro Dal Secco de; Sforcini,Mariana Paula Rossi; Abud,Guilherme de Carvalho; Ferrari,Viviane Borba; Elejalde,Denise Adelaide Gomes; Ezequiel,Jane Maria Bertocco.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical characteristics of the forage and ingestive behavior of Nellore heifers fed hydrolyzed sugarcane in different periods of storage. Twenty-four heifers with initial body weight of 119.6±8.1 kg were utilized. The experimental design was completely randomized, in which the treatments were diets with fresh sugarcane and hydrolyzed sugarcane (5 g of lime kg-1 of chopped sugarcane) stored for 24, 48 or 72 hours as the only roughage. The addition of lime to sugarcane associated with its storage up to 72 hours provided an increase of 20% of the potentially degradable cell wall of carbohydrates, from 382.4 to 458.8 g kg-1 of total carbohydrates. The in vitro digestibility of dry matter was altered by the...

Cruz,Rossini Sôffa da; Alexandrino,Emerson; Missio,Regis Luis; Neiva,José Neuman Miranda; Restle,João; Melo,Jonahtan Chaves; Sousa Júnior,Antonio de; Resende,José Messias de.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the feeding behavior of feedlot Nellore bulls fed two levels of concentrate (650 and 710 g/kg dry matter) with or without the inclusion of 350 g babassu mesocarp meal/kg dry matter in the concentrate. Twenty-eight animals at 18 months of initial age and 356.66±19.25 kg initial body weight were used. A completely randomized design was used with treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Increase in concentrate level from 650 to 710 g/kg dry matter did not change the feeding time, of 194.41 and 189.64 minutes/day, respectively. The inclusion of 350 g babassu mesocarp meal/kg dry matter in the concentrate increased the feeding time from 173.92 to 210.12 minutes/day, ensuring similar energy intake in...

Barbosa,Julicelly Gomes; Costa,Roberto Germano; Medeiros,Ariosvaldo Nunes de; Queiroga,Rita de Cássia Ramos do Egypto; Batista,Ângela Maria Vieira; Medeiros,Geovergue Rodrigues de; Beltrão Filho,Edvaldo Mesquita.
The objective of this study was to evaluate intake, apparent digestibility, ingestive behavior and blood parameters of milking goats fed cactus pear (Opuntia ficus indica) and increasing urea levels in substitution to soybean meal. Ten multiparous Alpine goats with average weight of 31±6.0 kg were used and distributed into (5 × 5) Latin squares and assessed during five 17-day periods, receiving five treatments with the following substitution levels: 0; 5; 10; 15 and 20 g/kg of urea. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF), non-fiber carbohydrates, ether extract, organic matter and water intake values showed differences, whith average values ranging from 1.03 to 1.13; 0.12 to 0.14; 1.76 to 2.10 kg/day and 0.77 to 1.48 kg/day, respectively. The NDF and crude protein...

Canizares,Gil Ignacio Lara; Gonçalves,Heraldo Cesar; Rodrigues,Luciana; Marques,Raquel Ornelas; Komiyama,Claudia Marie; Medeiros,Brenda Batista Lemos; Gomes,Helen Fernanda Barros; Arruda,Guilherme Mendes Machado Franco de.
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate levels of replacement (0, 33, 67 and 100%) of corn silage with fresh sugarcane in dairy-goat diets on the ingestive behavior of these animals. Eight lactating Alpine goats (after lactation peak) with a live weight of 51.95±3.29 kg were distributed into two 4 × 4 Latin squares according to their milk production. Animals were placed in individual pens where they received diets ad libitum, twice a day, with a roughage:concentrate ratio of 40:60, during 72 days of experiment. The evaluated variables were time spent feeding (TSF), ruminating (TSR), idle (TSI) and chewing (TSC), dry matter intake (DMI), neutral detergent fiber intake (NDFI), feeding efficiency of dry matter (FEDM) and neutral detergent fiber...
