Genetic diversity reduction in improved durum wheat cultivars of Morocco as revealed by microsatellite markers Scientia Agricola
Henkrar,Fatima; El-Haddoury,Jamal; Ouabbou,Hassan; Nsarellah,Nasserlehaq; Iraqi,Driss; Bendaou,Najib; Udupa,Sripada Mahabala.
ABSTRACT It has been argued that genetic diversity in crop varieties has been on the decline in recent times due to plant breeding. This can have serious consequences for both the genetic vulnerability of crops and their plasticity when responding to changes in production environments. It is, therefore, vital for plant breeding programs to maintain sufficient diversity in the cultivars deployed for multi-period cultivation. In this study, to understand the temporal genetic diversity in durum wheat, 21 improved durum wheat cultivars released in Morocco, since 1956 and five exotic cultivars currently used in crossing programs were analyzed using 13 microsatellite markers. The analysis revealed a total of 44 alleles and average genetic diversity of 0.485 with...

DNA fingerprints are DNA banding patterns obtaining from DNA samples that have been undergone through molecular genetic processes. These DNA fingerprints can be used to identify the genetic relationships or differences among individuals. DNA fingerprints will be very useful for plant varietal protection in the future, especially for those economically important crops. Regarding to plant varietal protection, an information used to describe agronomic characteristics of a given plant variety should follow Mendelian rules and not be affected by environments. DNA fingerprints of 33 Thai recommended rice varieties were conducted by using 32 DNA markers. The DNA banding patterns at each locus were compared to allele standards that have been conducted from 17 rice...

Genetic diversity in Calibrachoa pygmaea (Solanaceae): A hawkmoth-pollinated nightshade from the Pampas Acta Botanica
Mäder,Geraldo; Backes,Alice; Reck-Kortmann,Maikel; Freitas,Loreta B..
ABSTRACT Calibrachoa pygmaea is a unique species of Calibrachoa, especially concerning its flower morphology and the environment where it occurs. The species is self-incompatible and is narrowly distributed in wet and flooded fields of the Pampas region. We characterize the genetic diversity of the species based on traditional plastid markers and newly developed nuclear microsatellites to identify drivers that guide its evolution. Our results identified markers that are informative and useful for studying the population structure of C. pygmaea, as well as that of other species of Calibrachoa. Both marker sets were congruent in developing conclusions regarding the evolutionary scenario of C. pygmaea, and revealed that the genetic variability and population...

Population Structure and Genetic Diversity of Sweet Cassava Accessions from the Midwestern, Southeastern and Southern Regions of Brazil BABT
Ortiz,Alex Henrique Tiene; Vidigal Filho,Pedro Soares; Rocha,Vanesca Priscila Camargo; Ferreira,Rebecca Caroline Ulbricht; Gonçalves,Tiago Maretti; Gonçalves-Vidigal,Maria Celeste.
Abstract The objective of this work was to screen sweet cassava accessions collected in smallholding areas in the Midwestern, Southeastern and Southern regions of Brazil, using 15 SSR molecular markers, to determine population structure and genetic diversity. Polymorphism was detected in every loci analyzed, with mean of 6.33 alleles per locus, and mean polymorphism information content (PIC) of 0.6057, pointing out that the primers were highly informative. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.0709 (SSRY 101) to 0.9398 (GA 12), with a mean of 0.6511, and mean genetic diversity of 0.6578, ranging from 0.3592 (GA 136) to 0.8116 (SSRY 21). The most dissimilar combinations observed were BGM526PR-BGM596MS, BGM526PR-BGM622MS and BGM526PR-BGM629MS. The...
