Gear selectivity for three by-catch species in the shallow-water shrimp trawl fishery at the Sofala Bank, Mozambique OceanDocs
Pinto, M.A..
The reduction of shrimp by-catch when fishing with shrimp trawlers can constitute a strategy to minimise discards. A research cruise was conducted in February 1995 in shallow waters off Sofala Bank, Mozambique to investigate the sorting (selection) efficiency of cod-ends (55mm and 60mm meshes) compared to the top-grid (14mm space bar) systems using covered cod-end method. The selectivity parameters were obtained for Otolithes ruber, Johnius dussumieri and Thryssa vitrirostris through the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) method, using logit function and pooled samples through the variance component model (VCM) . The top-grid was mounted at a theoretical angle of 33°, one metre aft of the retriever strap, in a downward direction. The overall shrimp to...

An interview-based assessment of the incidental capture and mortality of sea turtles in Mozambique´s Sofala Bank commercial shrimp fishery OceanDocs
Brito, A..
Trawling for penaeid shrimps in Sofala Bank (central Mozambique) has been suggested to have major effects on the size of sea turtle populations. A total of 39 commercial fishers, fishery observers and enforcers were interviewed to assess the level of sea turtle catches in fishing operations and reported that at least 1,735±1,235 sea turtles are caught each fishing season of about seven months. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas, 48.4%), the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta, 25.8%) were the most common species, but catches also comprised the olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea),the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea). Over 54.8% of the incidents occur within a few miles of the small islands forming the Primeiras...

Reclutamiento del camarón rosado Farfantepenaeus notialis (Decapoda: Penaeidae) en el golfo de Ana María, Cuba. OceanDocs
Giménez Hurtado, E.; Alzugaray Martínez, R.; Garcés Rodríguez, Y.; Delgado Miranda, G.; Ventura Flores, A..

An intercomparison study of the determination of sulfite in tropical shrimps by the West European Fish Technologists' Association (WEFTA) OMA
Luten, J.; Bouquet, W.; Oehlenschläger, J.; Meetschen, U.; Etienne, M.; Stroud, G.; Bykowski, P.; Batista, I.; Vyncke, W.; Stefansson, G..
Eight WEFTA laboratories participated in two series of intercomparison exercises on sulfite determination in tropical shrimps. Samples of tropical shrimps were spiked with sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) and hydroxymethylsulfonate (HMS) at a level of 25-90 mg SO2/kg. Most of the laboratories determined the sulfite content with (modified) methods of Monier-Williams or De Vries et al. The overall mean recovery of sulfite was rather low (47-60%), which may be attributed to an irreversible reaction of sulfite with the tropical shrimps. The repeatability of the methods within the participating laboratories was good. However, reproducibility among the laboratories was...

Growth, longevity, and juvenile recruitment of the white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti (Burkenroad, 1936) (Decapoda: Penaeoidea) in southeastern Brazil Biological Sciences
Miazaki, Lizandra Fernandes; Santos, Ana Paula Freitas dos; Salvati, Dalilla da Silva; Simões, Sabrina Morilhas; Costa, Rogério Caetano da.
Litopenaeus schmitti is one of the most commercially exploited penaeids on the southeastern and southern Atlantic coast of Brazil. Information about juvenile recruitment and growth patterns of individuals is important for management programs. The present study estimated the growth parameters, longevity, and recruitment of L. schmitti in the region of Ubatuba, São Paulo State. The growth parameters of individuals were estimated by the Bertalanffy growth model, and longevity was estimated with the inverted Bertalanffy equation. The growth parameters were, for females and males respectively: CL∞ = 53.10 mm and 43.23 mm, k = 1.82 year-1 and 2.19 years-1, t0= 1.10 and 0.69. Longevity was calculated to be 2.27 years for females and 2.10 years for males....

Bony fish bycatch in the southern Brazil pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis and F. paulensis) fishery BABT
Vianna,Marcelo; Almeida,Tabajara.
Trawling for pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis and F. paulensis) catches also large quantities of fish, mostly bony fish, which are discarded, as they have no commercial value. Their composition and abundance were studied in an area that corresponded to the southeastern coastline of Brazil. Ninety one species were registered. Incidental fishing affected mainly small individuals and occured throughout the year. The year round rate of bony fish to shrimp catches was 10,5:1,0. Three assemblages of bony fishes could be identified, influenced by the seasonal variation of the water masses, the predominant group being associated with the Coastal Water, another with the penetration of colder waters onto the platform (SACW) and a third group of a more...
