Electrical conductivity of soil irrigated with swine wastewater estimated by time-domain reflectometry¹ Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Soncela,Rosimaldo; Sampaio,Silvio Cesar; Vilas Boas,Marcio Antonio; Tavares,Maria Hermínia Ferreira; Souza,Claudinei Fonseca; Soncela,Adriana Smanhotto.
Wastewater application to soil is an alternative for fertilization and water reuse. However, particular care must be taken with this practice, since successive wastewater applications can cause soil salinization. Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) allows for the simultaneous and continuous monitoring of both soil water content and apparent electrical conductivity and thus for the indirect measurement of the electrical conductivity of the soil solution. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of TDR for the indirect determination of the electrical conductivity (ECse) of the saturated soil extract by using an empirical equation for the apparatus TDR Trase 6050X1. Disturbed soil samples saturated with swine wastewater were used, at soil proportions of 0,...

Sensor placement for soil water monitoring in lemon irrigated by micro sprinkler AGRIAMBI
Coelho,Eugênio F.; Santos,Delfran B. dos; Azevedo,Carlos A. V. de.
This research had as its objective the investigation of an alternative strategy for soil sensor placement to be used in citrus orchards irrigated by micro sprinkler. An experiment was carried out in a Tahiti lemon orchard under three irrigation intervals of 1, 2 and 3 days. Soil water potential, soil water content distribution and root water extraction were monitored by a time-domain-reflectometry (TDR) in several positions in soil profiles radial to the trees. Root length and root length density were determined from digital root images at the same positions in the soil profiles where water content was monitored. Results showed the importance of considering root water extraction in the definition of soil water sensor placement. The profile regions for soil...

Environmental control on water vapour and energy exchanges over grasslands in semiarid region of Brazil AGRIAMBI
Gondim,Patrícia S. de S.; Lima,José R. de S.; Antonino,Antonio C. D.; Hammecker,Claude; Silva,Renan A. B. da; Gomes,Clarissa A..
A micrometeorological experiment was conducted over grasslands in a semi-arid region of north-eastern Brazil (São João, Pernambuco) from January to December 2011, using the Bowen ratio energy balance method, to improve the current understanding of energy partitioning and water vapour exchange over this ecosystem in this region. The objectives of the present study were to quantify the seasonal and diurnal variations in energy and water vapour exchanges over grasslands and understand the biotic and abiotic factors controlling the energy partitioning of this ecosystem. In the dry period, the low stored soil water limited the grass production and leaf area index, and as a consequence of these conditions, most of the annual net radiation (58%) was consumed in...

Water potential in peach branches as a function of soil water storage and evaporative demand of the atmosphere Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Monteiro,Alex Becker; Reisser Júnior,Carlos; Romano,Luciano Recart; Timm,Luís Carlos; Toebe,Marcos.
Abstract The use of water potential indicators in the plant has been adopted in irrigation management, in recent years, since it is accepted that the plant is the best indicator of its own water status. The objective of this study was to verify the relationship between water potential in peach tree branches and the evaporative demand of the atmosphere and the water availability in two textural classes of an Aquertic Hapludalf soil, aiming to adopt irrigation management strategies based on the water potential in the plant. Research was carried out in a commercial peach orchard, cv. Esmeralda, in the municipality of Morro Redondo-Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Four peach tree rows were evaluated, being two irrigated and two non irrigated. The irrigation...

Response of the TDR sensor to moisture under different types of management of a typical Latosol in the Cerrado Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Guimarães,Claudinei Martins; Costa,Carlos Alexandre Gomes; Carneiro,Leandro Flávio; Assunção,Hildeu Ferreira da.
ABSTRACT The technique of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is important in the evaluation of soil moisture due to being an instantaneous method, which is non-destructive, precise and little dependent on environmental factors. However, researchers have emphasised the need for continuous specific calibration for each soil-management situation. The aim of this work therefore, was to evaluate the response of a portable TDR sensor to soil moisture in a Dystroferric Red Latosol in the Cerrado, under three different systems of soil management and at three different depths in the soil profile. To do this, TDR equipment consisting of two rods, each 0.12 m in length, was used for instantaneous measurement of the volumetric water content of the soil. The depths of...

Neutron probe measurement of soil water content close to soil surface Scientia Agricola
Falleiros,M.C.; Ravelo Sanchez,A.; Souza,M.Dornelas de; Bacchi,O.O.S.; Pilotto,J.E.; Reichardt,K..
The problem of neutron probe soil water content measurements close to soil surface is analysed from the spatial variability and also from the slow neutron "loss" to the atmosphere points of view. Results obtained on a dark red latosol of the county of Piracicaba,SP, indicate the possibility of precisely measuring the neutron "sphere of influence" when different media are used on soil surface.

Soil moisture calibration of TDR multilevel probes Scientia Agricola
Serrarens,Daniel; MacIntyre,Jim L.; Hopmans,Jan W.; Bassoi,Luis H..
Time domain reflectometry (TDR) probes are increasingly used for field estimation of soil water content. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the multilevel TDR probe under field conditions. For this purpose, eight such TDR probes were installed in small plots that were seeded with beans and sorghum. Data collection from the probes was such that soil moisture readings were automated and logged using a standalone field unit. Neutron probe measurements were used to calibrate the TDR probes. Soil-probe contact and soil compaction were critical to the accuracy of the TDR, especially when a number of TDR probes are combined for a single calibration curve. If each probe is calibrated individually, approximate measurement errors were...

Seasonality of soil water exchange in the soybean growing season in southern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Moreira,Virnei Silva; Roberti,Débora R.; Minella,Jean Paolo; Gonçalves,Luis Gustavo G de; Candido,Luiz Antônio; Fiorin,Jackson E.; Moraes,Osvaldo L. L.; Timm,Andréa U.; Carlesso,Reimar; Degrazia,Gervásio Annes.
The processes of water transfer in the soil-plant-atmosphere system are strongly affected by soil use and management. Differences in the dynamics of soil water transfer between no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) practices during a soybean (Glycine max) growing season in southern Brazil were assessed in this study. All the water balance components were analyzed during the soybean growing season (2009/2010). Rainfall, runoff, soil water storage and hydro-physical soil properties were analyzed under two tillage systems. The land-atmosphere water vapor exchanges, obtained from eddy covariance stations, were analyzed with regard to the soybean agroecosystem. Characterizations of soil water storage were also formulated in the 2006/2007 and 2008/2009...

Calibration of a capacitance probe in a Paleudult Scientia Agricola
Silva,Cláudio Ricardo da; Andrade Júnior,Aderson Soares de; Alves Júnior,José; Souza,Antonio Barros de; Melo,Francisco de Brito; Coelho Filho,Maurício Antonio.
The use of capacitance sensors is one of the methods used to quantitatively measure soil water contents (theta, m³ m-3). Sensors provide readings at desired depths and time intervals. A capacitance probe (Diviner 2000) was calibrated for a Rhodic Paleudult from the Piaui State, Brazil. Six access tubes were installed in a 5 × 2 m grid arrangement. Three moisture levels (saturated, moist and dry) were used in two replications. Probe readings and soil samplings to determine theta were made at 0.1 m depth intervals down to a depth of 1.0 m. A power calibration equation was developed for each depth as well as for the entire soil profile (Root Mean Square Error = 0.014, R² = 0.93) for a theta range of 0.068 to 0.264 m³m-3. A separate calibration for each depth...

Dye tracer and morphophysical properties to observe water flow in a Gleyic Luvisol Scientia Agricola
Salvador,Monica Martins Silva; Köhne,Sigrid; Köhne,John Maximilian; Lennartz,Bernd; Libardi,Paulo Leonel.
The understanding of the preferential water flow and solute transport is important with regard to losses of nutrients and pesticides that affect the quality of the groundwater or surface water resources. Experiments using the brilliant blue dye tracer, a tension infiltrometer (TI) and a double square infiltrometer (DI) were carried out in the experimental field site located around 15 km southeast of the city of Rostock (North-Eastern Germany) on arable land in a Pleistocene lowland landscape where corn (Zea mays L.) and barley (Hordeum spp.) had been cultivated. One day after dye the infiltration, a pit was dug and vertical profiles were prepared in the TI and DI sites to assess the dye pathways in the subsoil of a Gleyic Luvisol. We wanted to examine if...

Neutron probe calibration correction by temporal stability parameters of soil water content probability distribution Scientia Agricola
Reichardt,K.; Portezan,O.; Bacchi,O.O.S.; Oliveira,J.C.M; Dourado-Neto,D.; Pilotto,J.E.; Calvache,M..
A neutron probe calibration correction is proposed in order to reduce soil water content variability, assumed to be a consequence of improper calibrations relations. The time stability of spatially measured soil water content data is used to correct the intercepts of linear calibration relations. This procedure reduced the coefficients of variation of soil water content data from 4 to less than 2% in a Rhodic Kanhapludalf.

Replacing clean fallow with minimum tilled pulse legume in a subtropical dryland at Pothwar, Pakistán Agrociencia
Sohail-Ijaz,Shahzada; Ali,Safdar.
Clean fallowing has been criticized in the recent past due to the fact that it causes accelerated soil erosion, emission of CO2 to the atmosphere and reduction in farm income. In an effort to reduce fallowing in Pothwar, Pakistan, field experiments were carried out from 2005 through 2008 at three locations (Rawalpindi, Chakwal and Fateh Jang). The experimental design was split-plot and treatments were applied as follows: conventional cultivator, moldboard plow and minimum tillage in main plots; fallow, legume (mungbean, Vigna radiata) and mulch of wheat straw were used in sub plots. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) was planted in all the subplots during winter. All the treatment plots had equivalent volumetric water content at wheat planting. Consequently, the...

Extending the integrated Richards Equation method to new boundary conditions: model description and validation Agrociencia
Yang,Dejun; Zhang,Tuqiao; Zhang,Kefeng; Lei,Shaogang.
There is a need for developing an accurate and simple method, which can be widely used in agro-hydrological models. The Integrated Richards Equation method is a good and simple method to simulate cyclic movement of water in the soil-atmosphere system. However, this method still has some unsolved problems and it is needed for further development if used in agro-hydrological simulation. In this study, the Integrated Richards Equation method was further developed for the agro-hydrological simulation by introducing the commonly used soil hydraulic functions, top and lower boundary conditions. Infiltration numerical experiments and a lab evaporation experiment were used for the validation of the model's capabilities of modelling infiltration and evaporation,...
