Nitrogen cycling and budget in Belgian coastal waters: North Sea areas with and without river inputs OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P.; Pichot, G.; Ozer, J.; Adam, Y.A.; Baeyens, W.F.J..
The coastal sea off Belgium has been extensively studied for a number of years on a multidisciplinary basis. Thus the stocks within the system's various compartments as well as the carbon or nitrogen fluxes between them resulting from biological activity at several trophic levels have been measured. Further, the tidal and residual circulations have been investigated and modeled in addition to the erosive properties of the flow. There are strong differences between the more coastal part of this area and the open sea. In particular, inputs from rivers and channels seem to exert an influence beyond what could normally be expected in coastal areas.Adequate modelling of the nitrogen cycle in such a diverse environment demanded a fine approach, including a...

<i>Syrticola flandricus</i> n.g., n.sp., a harpacticoid copepod from the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Willems, K.A.; Claeys, D..
During a comprehensive study of the macro- and meiobenthos of the Kwintebank, a sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea, eleven female specimens of a cylindropsyllid, belonging to a new genus, were collected from one of the stations sampled. The station's coordinates are 51°18'00''N 2°40'10''E. The sediment at this stations is a pure, very well sorted, coarse sand (median grain size: 517 µm; sorting: 0.24; mud<63µm: 0%) with a harpacticoid community similar to the <i>Leptastacus laticaudatus-Paramesochra helgolandica</i>- community from the "Open Sea" Zone described by Govaere et al. (1980). All specimens have been deposited at the "Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen", Vautierstraat 31, B-1040 Brussels, under no....

Toxicological investigations on four sperm whales stranded on the Belgian coast: inorganic contaminants OMA
Bouquegneau, J.-M.; Debacker, V.; Gobert, S.; Nellissen, J.P..
Nine heavy metals have been analysed in the liver, muscle and kidneys of sperm whales that stranded on the Belgian coast, November 18, 1994. The concentrations of most of the studied inorganic contaminants -except mercury and cadmium- were very low. The mercury content of the tissues was high, but in the range of those found in sperm whales previously described in the literature, as shown by Joiris et al. (this volume), and most of the mercury was found under an inorganic form. We found a close correlation between the mercury and selenium contents of the livers, which strongly suggests that the pollutant was detoxified under the tiemannite form, and therefore was not potentially toxic for the animals. On the contrary, cadmium was found in high...

On primary production in the South Bight of the North Sea OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
The area of the North Sea next to the Belgian and Dutch coasts has been surveyed since January 1971. The photosynthetic capacity (potential production) of samples collected at 63 stations and 4 depths has been measured using the 14C techniques. The homogeneity of the water column was demonstrated almost everywhere. A general pattern of decrease of the potential production from the coast to the open sea was demonstrated in all seasons. Figures ranged from 3 to 30 mg C m-3 h-1. Primary production was also determined both by calculations, using the Steemann Nielsen (1952) formula, and by <i>in situ</i> measurements. The higher turbidity near the coast has proved to limit...

Seismic tracking of geological hazards related to clay tectonics in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Henriet, J.-P.; D'Olier, B.; Auffret, J.P.; Andersen, H.L..
A joint seismic exploration programme, carried out in recent years by Belgian, British, French and Danish university laboratories in the southern North Sea and Schelde estuary, has revealed various styles of clay tectonics in Eocene and Oligocene deposits. In this paper particular attention is drawn on the remarkable deformation features observed in the Ieper or London clay, which forms the subsoil of the major part of the Thames estuary and the Belgian shelf sector. Those clay structures have eluded many previous investigations, mainly due to a lack of interfaces with large reflection coefficients. When however a seismic source is adequately tuned, the sum of reflection responses from the many subtle interfaces within the clay sequence may construct an...

Particulate trace metals above the Southern Bight of the North Sea: 1. Analytical procedures and average aerosol concentrations OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Dedeurwaerder, H..
Heavy metal concentrations in total particulate suspended matter and size fractionated particulate suspended matter above the Southern Bight of the North Sea have been assessed. Most of the samples were collected from a light vessel; the total sampling period covered about 70 days at sea. Stringent precautions were taken during sampling, storage, handling and analysis of the samples. As a conclusion, we found that on a long-term basis the aerosol concentrations above the North Sea have a fairly homogeneous composition, but short-term variations probably resulting from point emissions were observed. The cascade impactor results indicated that Pb, Cu, Cd and Zu were carried by submicrometer aerosols, Na, Fe, Mn and Al by supermicrometer aerosols. Most of the...

Particulate trace metals above the Southern Bight of the North Sea: 2. Origin and behaviour of the trace metals OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Dedeurwaerder, H..
Ninety-six aerosol samples were collected in all seasons and wind conditions in the troposphere of the Southern Bight of the North Sea. About one third of these samples were collected with a six stage cascade impactor sampler. Considering that in each sample metals were analyzed, the data set we had to handle consisted of about 2000 results. In addition, wind directions and wind speeds are also included in this data set. To interpret all these results, we relied upon two methods: (1) enrichment factors were calculated and allowed us to identify some of the metal sources; (2) three factors resulted from a multivariate analysis method: in the first factor we only find Na, representing the marine component; the second factor includes Al (a crustal and...

Estimates of dry and wet deposition and resuspension fluxes of several trace metals in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Dedeurwaerder, H.L.; Dehairs, F.A.; Decadt, G.; Baeyens, W.F.J..
In this study we have investigated air-sea exchanges in the Belgian coastal area located in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. Since 1980 the tropospheric aerosol contents for the trace elements Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn and for the reference elements Al , Fe, Na have been monitored on an intermittent basis from a maritime sampling platform (Light-Vessel West-Hinder; position: 51°23.5'N- 2°21.5'E, fig. 1). During 1981 sampling campaigns at sea were paralleled by sampling campaigns on land, in the coastal area (natural reserve De Blankaert, located at 20 Km inland), in order to allow for a better evaluation of the specific source or sink role of the sea. No major source of pollution exists between the maritime and the continental sampling sites. During these...

Benthic communities in the Southern Bight of the North Sea and their use in ecological monitoring OMA
Govaere, J.C.R.; Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; De Coninck, L.A.P..
Macrobenthic and meiobenthic communities of an area off the Belgian coast of the North Sea were studied from 1970 until 1975 at 74 stations. On the basis of both macro- and meiobenthos, three zones can be distinguished in the area. The coastal zone is characterized by the macrobenthic <i>Abra alba</i> community, corresponding to the meiobenthic <i>Microarthridion littorale</i>-<i>Halectinosoma herdmani</i> community, and the open sea zone by the macrobenthic <i>Venus gallina</i> community and the meiobenthic <i>Leptastacus laticaudatus-Paramesochra helgolandica</i> community. In between is a transient zone where elements of both other zones mix. The distribution of these zones is governed by the...

Dynamic patterns of dissolved nitrogen in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Goeyens, L.; Dehairs, F.A.; Dedeurwaerder, H.; Decadt, G..
Spatial and temporal variations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) have been assessed in onshore and offshore areas of the Southern Bight on the basis of several years' measurements. They indicate that both the residual flow lines and DIN isoconcentration lines run parallel with the coast except in the vicinity of important freshwater discharge points such as the Scheldt estuary. Evidence was found that the seasonal DIN oscillations are not created through fluctuations in input conditions at the lateral boundaries, despite considerable fluctuations in these inputs which include the English Channel (from 500 tons(t) N day-1 in June up to approximately 2000 t N day-1 in February) and also rivers such as the...

The relative importance of nannoplankton in the North Sea primary production OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
The South Bight of the North Sea has been investigated for the photosynthetic capacity of net- and nannoplankton, the fractional filtration method being used simultaneously with the C14 technique. The water appeared to be well mixed so that no important variations occurred along the vertical profile. The horizontal distribution of net-/nannoplankton ratios showed, however, a zonation pattern with netplankton-dominant activity near to the coast and nannoplankton-dominant activity further off. The interference of the River Scheldt has also been demonstrated. The various implications of the 'metabolic structure' of the phytoplankton community demonstrated by the fractionation method are discussed.

Single particle characterisation of inorganic and organic North Sea suspension OMA
Jambers, W.; Dekov, V.; Van Grieken, R..
Automated electron probe X-ray micro-analysis and scanning transmission electron microscopy were used to characterise the chemical and mineral composition of individual suspended particles, collected in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. The suspended matter contains 13 particle types, which can be classified in seven genetic groups: (i) terrigenous (aluminosilicate and calcium carbonate particle types); (ii) terrigenous-biogenic (silica type); (iii) terrigenous-hydrogenous (Fe-rich type); (iv) biogenic-authogenic (S-containing type); (v) terrigenous-anthropogenic (Ti- and Al-rich types); (vi) biogenic-anthropogenic (organic type); and (vii) terrigenous-anthropogenic-authogenous (heavy metal rich type). Effects of titanium dioxide industry waste dumping on sea water chemistry OMA
Roekens, E.J.; Van Grieken, R.E..
An investigation was made to determine the influence of the dumping of a 1000 ton day-1, on the average, of acid-iron waste from the titanium dioxide industry into the shallow but turbulent Southern Bight of the North Sea. This waste contains some 20% sulphuric acid and 2% iron. After the passage of the barge that discharges 10 ton of waste min-1 into its wake, the vertical and horizontal distributions of the pH, iron-concentrations and turbidity were measured as a function of time. It appeared that a few seconds after the discharge and for a very brief period, the pH was down to approx. 4 and the Fe-concentration was 13 mg l-1. More than 1 min after the discharge a pH below 6 and an...
