The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition and fatty acids profile present in Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) northern population as a function of fish size and fishing area (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). Samples were collected during the northern stock assessment cruise of the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) carried out on board of FRV Capitán Oca Balda in Spring 2008 (OB-02/2008). The fishing trawls were performed between 34º 35' S and 40º 19' S. The area was divided in two zones: the northern, between 34º S-38º S, strongly influenced by the mixohaline waters of the Río de la Plata River estuary and the southern, between 38º S-41º S, that included the El Rincón coastal area. In each... |

This paper will mainly focus on the Western Africa Marine Eco-Region, (WAMER) composed of Mauritania, Senegal, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea. Since all the countries in this eco-region, except The Gambia, have fisheries agreements with the European Union (EU), they provide an interesting example of ACP-EU relations in the fishery sector. In the WAMER eco-region, the fishery sector is a source of foreign currency, jobs and food for more than 22 million people. A look at the current fishery stock shows alarming trends: decrease in average size of fish caught, reduction in Catch per Unit of Effort (CPUE) for various species, especially the coastal demersals,1 etc. Depletion of marine stocks would have disastrous economic and social effects. |

Cannibalism is not an abnormal behaviour and it can be observed in a wide number of animals. In Pisces, cannibalism may be the result of endogenous intraspecific factors (nutritional state, size, age, state of development) or exogenous intraspecific factors (food, density, light). Nevertheless, external fertilization and the high fecundity of teleost fish tend to increase egg cannibalism, in particular among filter feeding fishes such as anchovies. In the present work, two important Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita stocks were studied. The first is to the north of 41°S, and spawns during spring on the coastal and shelf waters of Buenos Aires Province,Argentina, and Uruguay. The second one inhabits the Patagonian region, from 41°S to 47°S. It spawns... |

Spawning and reproductive variables of the northern hake stock were analyzed using macroscopic and histologic gonad information derived from samples collected in May 2009. The study includes estimates of batch fecundity, spawning frequency, oocyte dry weight and size at first maturity. During May 2009 the reproductive activity of the northern hake stock took place mainly near the 50 m isobath, north of 37° S. Spawning occurred within a temperature range of 9 °C-15 °C that coincided with a bottom thermal front. Size at first maturity, much lower than that reported at the beginning of the 1980s, showed differences between males (27.16 cm TL) and females (32.84 cm TL). The reproductive frequency was estimated at one spawning every 13 days and mean batch... |

The annual research planning of the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP, Mar del Plata, Argentina) includes at least two surveys to estimate the total biomass of Argentine anchovy Northern and Southern stocks. The assessment is performed using hydroacoustic techniques and the Daily Egg Production Method. In this paper the results of the acoustic estimates obtained during the 1993-2008 period are summarized. Besides, the studies performed to determine the characteristics of the species behavior such as vertical migrations or avoidance reactions to vessels that would produce uncertainty about estimates absolute value are discussed. |

Engraulis anchoita northern stock reproductive biomass (SSB) during the 1993-2008 period was estimated applying the Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM) and accuracy of estimates assessed using a bootstrap technique (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The basic data were collected in different research surveys carried out in late Spring, at the peak of the spawning season. The aim of this work was to build reliable confidence intervals around the estimates of the mean reproductive biomass applying a non-parametric bootstrap method. Resampling methods are becoming increasingly popular as statistical tools as they are robust and do not require the assumption of any particular distribution of the basic data. This is especially relevant when assessing the DEPM... |

The role played by “speculators” during the 2007/08 food price spike is lively disputed. Our analysis focuses on the increasing participation of index funds in agricultural commodity futures markets before the food price spike. Our central theme is to determine if their prespike massive entry does prepare the subsequent crisis by maintaining low stock levels. We develop a theoretical model explaining the behaviour of speculators and traders on futures and cash markets. We allow index funds to inflict an informational externality on commercial traders that is supposed to induce a lower desire to hold stock. We find out that, once the production decisions of commercial traders are taken into account into the model, the increased net long position of index... |

This working paper examines the food security policy, where food security means ensuring an adequate supply of food for hungry people. In particular, the recommendations of FAO are being used as a measuring rod against which food security policies are assessed. By means of FAO's database a statistical analysis of all Sub-Saharan Africa countries with respect to measuring the incidence and severity of critical food shortages are carried out. Stock policies seem to have been the answer when issues of ensuring adequate supplies have surfaced. In the paper, an estimate of the costs of keeping stocks is provided, and the costs are quite staggering. Based on the statistical analysis an estimate of the number and volume of acute food shortages per year in... |

Abstract The loss of organic carbon stocks from the soil and their expulsion into the atmosphere due to the effect of anthropogenic activities must be understood as a problem that goes beyond the environmental to the social and economic context, with the soil degradation being just one of its many impacts. While the accumulation of carbon in the soil depends naturally on the interaction among a series of biotic and abiotic factors, management practices often cause the deterioration of its physical, chemical and biological properties, and, thus, increase the levels of mineralization and a reduction in carbon stocks. This research was undertaken in the municipality of San José del Rincón, State of Mexico, in volcanic soils under different conditions of soil... |
