Description of ten additional ossicles in the foregut of the freshwater crabs Sylviocarcinus pictus and Valdivia serrata (Decapoda: Trichodactylidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Lima-Gomes,Renata C.; Lima,Jô de Farias; Magalhães,Célio.
ABSTRACT The morphology of stomach ossicles of decapod crustaceans provides valuable information on their phylogeny and biology. We herein described ten new ossicles in the foreguts of two trichodactylid crabs, Sylviocarcinus pictus (H. Milne-Edwards, 1853) and Valdivia serrata White, 1847, in addition to previously described 38 ossicles, which are also recognized and listed. Five specimens each of S. pictus and V. serrata were selected for morphological analysis of gastric ossicles. The stomachs were obtained after removing the carapace, and they were fixed in 10% formalin for 24 hours. After this procedure, the stomachs were immersed in a solution of 10% Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) and heated to 100 °C during 60 minutes for tissue maceration. At this...

Estudo ultra-estrutural do estômago de Trichogenes longipinnis (Britski & Ortega) (Pisces, Siluriformes, Trichomicteridae) Zoologia
Pinheiro,Nadja Lima; Mendes,Rosa Maria M.; George,Luiz Ludovico; Chaves,Antonio Carlos P..
The observations made about the stomach of Trichogenes longipinnis (Britski & Ortega, 1983) showed a rounded organ which has in its dorsal side an accessory structure - a cul de sac - that comunicates with it. The distal part of this dorsal accessory presents characteristic of an organ that exercise respiratory functions: reduction in the thickness of the mucosa and arrangement of an intrincate continuous capilar net in close contact with the superficial cells of the epithelium. In this portion there are no glands in the lamina propria. The epithelium shows a superficial squamous cels; they are very slim, and sometimes, with the capillary endothelium form a single barrier between the organ lumen and the blood. Polyhedric cells are also present in...

Development and functional morphology of the larval foregut of two brachyuran species from Northern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Monteiro,Joely R.C.; Souza Junior,Antonio N. de; Oliva,Pedro A.C..
Feeding is an important factor for the successful rearing of larvae of the crab species. Further information on the morphological features of the foregut may to reveal larval feeding behaviour and or/whether there is a lecithotrophy in some or even in all stages of the larval cycle. In the present study, the structural development of the foregut and their digestive functions were examined in larvae of two brachyurans, Uca vocator and Panopeus occidentalis, reared in the laboratory. During larval development, the foreguts of the larvae in the first and last zoeal stages and in the megalopa stage were microscopically examined, described and illustrated. The zoeal foreguts of both species were well developed, showing specialization with a functional...

Lesions (ulcers and/or erosions) and desquamations location in the gastric mucosa from asymptomatic Quarter Horse foals: endoscopic survey Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
DEARO,Antonio Cezar de Oliveira; LOPES,Marco Aurélio Ferreira; GANDOLFI,Waldir.
Gastric ulcer accounts for an important cause of abdominal discomfort in young horses. Concerning either the presence or absence of clinical signs and their variations, the lesions location in the gastric mucosa and complications resulting from ulcerative lesions, four clinical syndromes have been described in foals: 1) Asymptomatic or silent ulcers; 2) Symptomatic or active ulcers; 3) Perforated ulcers; and 4) Gastric or duodenal obstruction. With the aim of studying the distribution of lesions (ulcers and/or erosions) and desquamations from the non-glandular epithelium in the gastric mucosa of young horses and a possible relationship between both alterations (lesion/desquamation), sixty Quarter Horse foals without signs of gastric disease underwent...

Prevalence of gastric lesions (ulcers and/or erosions) and their relationship to possible stressfull factors in asymptomatic Quarter Horse foals: endoscopic survey Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
DEADO,Antonio Cezar de Oliveira; LOPES,Marco Aurélio Ferreira; GANDOLFI,Waldir.
Gastric ulcer accounts for one of the most important causes of abdominal discomfort in young horses. With the aim of studying the prevalence of lesions (ulcers and/or erosions) and their relationship to factors such as stress, age and sex, sixty quarter horse foals without signs of gastric disease underwent gastroscopy. Foals were divided into four age groups of 15 animals as follows: 1 to 30 days, 31 to 60 days, 61 to 90 days and 91 to 120 days. The prevalence of gastric lesions was 43.3%. Foals aged 61 to ninety days were the most affected (nine of 15). There were no significant differences between ages. Squamous epithelial exfoliation was observed in nine foals (60%) less than thirty days, in six (40%) between 31 to sixty days and only in two foals...

Clinical, endoscopic and prognostic aspects of primary gastric non-hodgkin's lymphoma associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome BJID
Rezende,Rosamar Eulira Fontes; Mantelmacher,Marcos; Ferreira,Sandro da Costa; Hyppólito,Elodie Bomfim; Machado,Alcyone Artioli; Ardengh,José Celso; Módena,José Luiz Pimenta.
Primary gastric non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a co-morbidity that can be observed during the clinical course of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We evaluated the prevalence, clinical-evolutive aspects and form of endoscopic presentation of primary gastric NHL associated with AIDS. Two hundred and forty-three HIV patients were submitted to upper digestive endoscopy, with evaluation of clinical, endoscopic and histological data. A CD4 count was made by flow cytometry and viral load was determined in a branched-DNA assay. Six cases (five men; mean age: 37 years; range: 29-46 years) of primary gastric NHL were detected. The median CD4 count was 140 cells/mm³ and the median viral load was 40,313 copies/mL. Upper digestive endoscopy revealed polypoid...

Associated laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy and ovariohisterectomy in a Great Dane bitch Ciência Rural
Pinto Filho,Saulo Tadeu Lemos; Dalmolin,Fabíola; Oliveira,Marília Teresa de; Souza,Fernando Wiecheteck de; Sprada,Arícia Gomes; Rosa,Matheus Pippi da; Feranti,João Pedro Scussel; Brun,Mauricio Veloso.
Gastropexy techniques are performed aiming to adhere permanently the stomach to the abdomen, being this one of the most common indications for prevention and treatment of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). The only accepted method for the prevention of GDV is the prophylactic gastropexy, and the laparoscopic-assisted procedure is quick and easy to perform. It is aimed to report the association of laparoscopic-assisted prophylactic gastropexyand elective ovariohysterectomy (OVH) in a two years old Great dane bitch using the two-portals access, when it was observed rapid and complete recovery. It is concluded that the two portals laparoscopic-assisted prophylactic gastropexy is feasible and safe in dogs, when combined with elective OVH. It makes the...
