Dietary supplementation with glutamine or glutamic acid for weanling piglets PAB
Amorim,Alessandro Borges; Saleh,Mayra Anton Dib; Miassi,Gabriela de Mello; Berto,Dirlei Antonio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of dietary glutamine and glutamic acid supplementation on carbon turnover (δ13C) in the muscles of piglets, on animal performance, and on feed economic feasibility. The diets consisted of: control (C), 1% glutamine (G), and 1% glutamic acid (GA). In experiment I, 111 piglets were used to assess carbon turnover in the Masseter, Psoas major, and Abdominal internal oblique muscles in terms of their isotopic composition and 13C substitution over time. In experiment II, 72 piglets were assigned randomly to blocks (eight replicates per treatment and three animals per experimental unit), in order to evaluate animal performance and feed economic feasibility. The GA diet promoted the best 13C...

Santos,Viviane Maria Oliveira dos; Caldara,Fabiana Ribeiro; Seno,Leonardo de Oliveira; Feijó,Gelson Luis Dias; Paz,Ibiara Correia de Lima Almeida; Garcia,Rodrigo Garófallo; Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Altemio,Ângela Dulce Cavenaghi.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of alkaline solution marinades on the characteristics of pork subjected to post-mortem pH decrease in pig muscle. The pH of carcasses was measured in a commercial slaughterhouse (n = 526), 45 min after slaughtering (pH45) and, then, the carcasses were divided into the groups with pH45<5.7 or pH45>5.7. Ten samples of the longissimus dorsi muscles of each group were collected and distributed in an entirely randomized design, in a 2x4 factorial arrangement, with two conditions (pH45<5.7 or pH45>5.7), and four marinade solutions: TC, no marinade; TM1, sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride; TM2, sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium chloride; TM3, sodium bicarbonate, sodium...

Invasive wild boars and native mammals in agroecosystems in the Atlantic Forest of Western Brazil PAB
Doutel-Ribas,Cynthia; Martins,Fernando Ibanez; Campos,Zilca; Piovezan,Ubiratan; Tomas,Walfrido; Silva,Virgínia Santiago; Pellegrin,Aiesca; Mourão,Guilherme.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate an index of the relative biomass per species, in a medium to large-sized mammal community, as well as to determine how the introduced wild boar (Sus scrofa) fits into this index, and to verify if the occupancy of sites by domestic dogs interferes with those of wild boars and how much the periods of dogs’ activity overlap those of wild boars. The biomass/effort index was measured for each native mammal species and for the introduced wild boar, in two surveyed farms in Brazil’s Western Atlantic Forest range, through the use of camera trappings that were also used to verify if dogs and wild boar overlap in space and activity time. Wild boars seem to dominate the community, just a few years after their...

Behavior of immunocastrated pigs R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Rita de Kássia Silva dos; Caldara,Fabiana Ribeiro; Moi,Marta; Santos,Luan Sousa dos; Nääs,Irenilza Alencar; Foppa,Luciana; Garcia,Rodrigo Garófallo; Borquis,Rusbel Raul Aspilcueta.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of immunocastrated male pigs compared with females and castrated males during the period before and after full immunization. A total of 30 animals were divided into three treatments, with ten animals in each (females, barrows, and immunocastrated males). The experiment was divided into three periods: 70 to 80 days of age (period 1), 81 to 110 days of age (period 2), and 111 to 140 days of age (period 3). The behavior of animals during these stages was evaluated. Immunocastrated males showed a higher rate of aggressive and sexual behavior during period 2, which decreased after the second vaccine dose. Both barrows and immunocastrated males presented high locomotion in period 1, reducing the...

Behaviour, heart rate, and heart rate variability in pigs exposed to novelty R. Bras. Zootec.
Zupan,Manja; Framstad,Tore; Zanella,Adroaldo José.
ABSTRACT In the present study, we investigated behavioural responses and determined parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) to elucidate a relative activation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) during baseline (10 min) and in response to potentially stressful situations (10 min) in two pig breeds and sexes. Gilts (n = 21) and barrows (n = 9) of the Landrace × Yorkshire (LY; n = 15) and Landrace/Yorkshire × Landrace/Duroc (LYLD; n = 15) breeds were subjected to a novel object test (NOT) and a novel arena test (NAT). Basal ANS state differed in pigs across breeds but not sexes. Landrace × Yorkshire pigs had a significantly lower basal heart rate (HR) and low-frequency band (LF) with a higher root mean square of successive interbeat intervals (RMSSD) and...
