Genetic polymorphisms and asthma: findings from a case - control study in the Madeira island population Biol. Res.
Berenguer,Anabela Gonçalves; Fernandes,Ana Teresa; Oliveira,Susana; Rodrigues,Mariana; Ornelas,Pedro; Romeira,Diogo; Serrão,Tânia; Rosa,Alexandra; Câmara,Rita.
BACKGROUND: Asthma is a complex disease influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors. While Madeira has the highest prevalence of asthma in Portugal (14.6%), the effect of both genetic and environmental factors in this population has never been assessed. We categorized 98 asthma patients according to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines, established their sensitization profile, and measured their forced expiratory volume in 1second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) indexes. Selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analysed as potential markers for asthma susceptibility and severity in the interleukin 4 (IL4), interleukin 13 (IL13), beta-2-adrenergic receptor (ADRB2), a disintegrin and metalloprotease 33 (ADAM33),...

Coastal vulnerability to sea level rise in the southwestern Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
García Echavarría,Luz Marleny; Alcántara-Carrió,Javier; Jaramillo Vélez,Alfredo.
ABSTRACT One of the concerns about climate change is the rise in sea level, which is associated with an increase in coastal erosion, saline intrusion in estuaries and the risk of flooding. These changes make it necessary to evaluate the coastal susceptibility and its adaptation capacity facing with this phenomenon. The Coastal Vulnerability Index made up of the variables geomorphology, slope, rate of change of coastline, significant wave height, rate of change of relative sea level and mean tidal range, seeks to locally estimate vulnerability. This work focused on determining the Vulnerability in the coastline of the sectors Volcán de Lodo, Río Hobo, Zapata and Punta Las Vacas through the use of aerial photographs, satellite images, in situ data and...

Involvement of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGFβ1) cytokine and FOXP3 transcription factor genetic polymorphisms in hematological malignancies BABT
Vitiello,Glauco Akelinghton Freire; Guembarovski,Roberta Losi; Oliveira,Carlos Eduardo Coral de; Amarante,Marla Karine; Perim,Aparecida de Lourdes; Watanabe,Maria Angelica Ehara.
Hematological malignancies (HM) are a group of neoplastic diseases that arise from hematologic cell lineages. Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) is shown to negatively regulate normal and malignant hematopoiesis and, in immunological context, to promote T cell exhaustion and generation of regulatory T cells, which are shown to be deleterious in cancer, by the induction of transcription factor FOXP3 expression. The present study aimed to evaluate TGFB1 exon-1 rs1800470 and FOXP3 intron-1 rs2232365 polymorphisms in relation to HM susceptibility. DNA was extracted from blood samples of 43 HM patients and 142 neoplasia-free individuals and polymorphisms were analyzed by allelic-specific PCR. Association analysis was assessed by the Odds Ratio (OR) with...

Susceptibility of S. pneumoniae to various antibiotics among strains isolated from patients and healthy carriers in different regions of Brazil (1999-2000) BJID
Rossi,F.; Andreazzi,D.; Maffucci,M.; Pereira,A A..
Resistance of microbes to commonly used antibiotics became a major concern at the end of the last century. Because Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common pathogen in respiratory infections, we conducted microbiological assessment of drug susceptibility patterns among strains collected from two different population groups: 1) adult and pediatric patients (375 isolates) with different infections, and 2) healthy children in day care centers (< 5 years old; 350 isolates). High level resistance to penicillin was not identified in either group. Intermediate resistance levels were similar in both groups (adults: 9.9%; children: 9.2%). The Central West region of Brazil tended to have lower susceptibility of S.pneumoniae from infected adults and children to...

Kubiça,Thaís Felli; Denardi,Laura Bedin; Azevedo,Maria Isabel; Oliveira,Vanessa; Severo,Luiz Carlos; Santurio,Janio Morais; Alves,Sydney Hartz.
ABSTRACT The antifungal activity of tacrolimus in combination with antifungal agents against different fungal species has been previously reported. Here we report the in vitro interactions between tacrolimus and amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole, and caspofungin against 30 clinical isolates of both fluconazole-susceptible and fluconazole-resistant Trichosporon asahii. For these analyses, we used the broth microdilution method based on the M27-A3 technique and checkerboard microdilution method. Tacrolimus showed no activity against T. asahii strains (minimal inhibitory concentrations, MICs > 64.0 µg mL−1). However, a larger synergistic interaction was observed by the combinations tacrolimus + amphotericin B (96.67%) and tacrolimus + caspofungin...

Bioassay method for toxicity studies of insecticide formulations to Tuta absoluta (meyrick, 1917) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Galdino,Tarcísio Visintin da Silva; Picanço,Marcelo Coutinho; Morais,Elisangela Gomes Fidelis de; Silva,Nilson Rodrigues; Silva,Geverson Aelton Rezende da; Lopes,Mayara Cristina.
Chemical control is the main method for controlling the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Reported techniques for the evaluation of insecticide toxicity to the tomato leafminer are not in agreement with field conditions and do not allow us to verify whether doses used in the field are efficient for control. Thus, the objective of this work was to develop a bioassay methodology to study the toxicity of insecticide formulations to T. absoluta that represent field conditions for fast-acting insecticides (neurotoxics and inhibitors of respiration) and slow-acting insecticides (Bacillus thuringiensis and insect growth regulators). The leaf-dip method was the most efficient method for toxicity studies of insecticides...
