The exceptional surface turbidity of the North-West European shelf seas during the stormy 2013-2014 winter: consequences for the initiation of the phytoplankton blooms? ArchiMer
Gohin, Francis; Bryere, Philippe; Griffiths, Joshua.
A succession of storms during the winter 2013-2014 enhanced the resuspension of sediments in the surface waters of the North-West European shelf seas. The effects of waves on satellite-derived non-algal SPM (Suspended Particulate Matters) are discussed for the January 2008-March 2014 period. A simple statistical model relating locally SPM to tidal intensity and waves help us analyse the main characteristics of the winter 2013-2014. The exceptional run of storms observed in this stormy and rainy winter has resulted in the highest SPM concentration in the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscay ever observed by remote-sensing during the 1998-2014 period. Despite the lower clarity of the surface waters over a large part of the continental shelf during the first days...

Potential of High Spatial and Temporal Ocean Color Satellite Data to Study the Dynamics of Suspended Particles in a Micro-Tidal River Plume ArchiMer
Ody, Anouck; Doxaran, David; Vanhellemont, Quinten; Nechad, Bouchra; Novoa, Stefani; Many, Gael; Bourrin, Francois; Verney, Romaric; Pairaud, Ivane; Gentili, Bernard.
Ocean color satellite sensors are powerful tools to study and monitor the dynamics of suspended particulate matter (SPM) discharged by rivers in coastal waters. In this study, we test the capabilities of Landsat-8/Operational Land Imager (OLI), AQUA&TERRA/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and MSG-3/Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) sensors in terms of spectral, spatial and temporal resolutions to (i) estimate the seawater reflectance signal and then SPM concentrations and (ii) monitor the dynamics of SPM in the Rhone River plume characterized by moderately turbid surface waters in a micro-tidal sea. Consistent remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) values are retrieved in the red spectral bands of these four satellite...

Glider-Based Active Acoustic Monitoring of Currents and Turbidity in the Coastal Zone ArchiMer
Gentil, Mathieu; Many, Gaël; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Cauchy, Pierre; Pairaud, Ivane; Testor, Pierre; Verney, Romaric; Bourrin, François.
The recent integration of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) onto underwater gliders changes the way current and sediment dynamics in the coastal zone can be monitored. Their endurance and ability to measure in all weather conditions increases the probability of capturing sporadic meteorological events, such as storms and floods, which are key elements of sediment dynamics. We used a Slocum glider equipped with a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth), an optical payload, and an RDI 600 kHz phased array ADCP. Two deployments were carried out during two contrasting periods of the year in the Rhone River region of freshwater influence (ROFI). Coastal absolute currents were reconstructed using the shear method and bottom tracking measurements, and...

VNREDSat-1 is the first Vietnamese satellite enabling the survey of environmental parameters such as vegetation and water coverages, or surface water quality at medium spatial resolution (from 2.5 to 10 meters depending on the considered channel). The NAOMI sensor on board VNREDSat-1 has the required spectral bands to assess the suspended particulate matter concentration, SPM. Because recent studies have shown that the remote sensing reflectance, Rrs(ƒÜ), at the blue (450 ¡V 520 nm), green (530 ¡V 600 nm), and red (620 ¡V 690 nm) spectral bands can be assessed from NAOMI with a good accuracy, the present study is dedicated to the development and validation of an algorithm (hereafter referred to as V1SPM) to assess SPM from Rrs(ƒÜ) over inland and coastal...

Biogeochemical markers of organic matter along the Wight-Cherbourg transect (central English Channel) ArchiMer
Ismaili, Mm; Serve, L; Gadel, F; Lafite, R; Texier, H.
Three cruises on the Wight-Cherbourg transect were undertaken during the FluxManche II Programme in order to study the origin, nature and behaviour of organic matter inputs to the waters of the English Channel. Suspended particulate material (SPM) collected from surface and deep waters at each station was analysed at elemental level for Particulate Organic Carbon and Particulate Organic Nitrogen (POC, PON), at molecular level for main classes of organic compounds using Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) and for phenolic compounds, particularly lignin-derived phenols, using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The SPM content increases from the French (south) to the English coast (north) with the lowest values...

Suspended particulate matter fluxes through the Straits of Dover, English Channel: observations and modelling ArchiMer
Lafite, Robert; Shimwell, Susan; Grochowski, Nicolas; Dupont, Jacques; Nash, Linda; Salomon, Jean-claude; Cabioch, Louis; Collins, Michael; Gao, Shu.
Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentrations at various levels within the water column, together with salinity and temperature, were measured using water samples collected from six stations across the Straits of Dover. The sampling programme covered a 16-month period, undertaken during 23 cruises. On the basis of the spatial variability in the concentrations, the water bodies are divided by several boundaries, controlled by tidal and wind conditions. Within the water column, SPM concentrations were higher near the sea bed than in the surface waters. Throughout the cross-section, maximum concentrations occurred adjacent to the coastlines. Temporal variability in the SPM concentration exists on daily and seasonal scales within the coastal waters (4.2 to...

Les polychlorobiphenyles ( PCB ) en Baie de Seine ArchiMer
Abarnou, Alain.
PCB contamination and i ts relationship wi th suspended particulate matter (SPM) have been studied in water from the Seine estuary and the baie de Seine, in July 1985 and February 1986. PCB chromatograms are very similar and characterize a chronic contamination. PCB concentrations vary from 2 ng/l in the marine zone up to 210 ng/l in the estuary. SPM and PCB concentrations are weIl correlated. Highest PCB concentrations are measured in February due to higher SPM inputs mainly made of finer particles.

Atmospheric Corrections and Multi-Conditional Algorithm for Multi-Sensor Remote Sensing of Suspended Particulate Matter in Low-to-High Turbidity Levels Coastal Waters ArchiMer
Novoa, Stefani; Doxaran, David; Ody, Anouck; Vanhellemont, Quinten; Lafon, Virginie; Lubac, Bertrand; Gernez, Pierre.
The accurate measurement of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations in coastal waters is of crucial importance for ecosystem studies, sediment transport monitoring, and assessment of anthropogenic impacts in the coastal ocean. Ocean color remote sensing is an efficient tool to monitor SPM spatio-temporal variability in coastal waters. However, near-shore satellite images are complex to correct for atmospheric effects due to the proximity of land and to the high level of reflectance caused by high SPM concentrations in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions. The water reflectance signal ((w)) tends to saturate at short visible wavelengths when the SPM concentration increases. Using a comprehensive dataset of high-resolution satellite...

Measurement of suspended particulate matter concentration (SPMC) spanning large time and geographical scales have become a matter of growing importance in recent decades. At many places worldwide, complex observation platforms have been installed to capture temporal and spatial variability over scales ranging from cm (turbulent regimes) to whole basins. Long-term in situ measurements of SPMC involve one or more optical and acoustical sensors and, as the ground truth reference, gravimetric measurements of filtered water samples. The estimation of SPMC from optical and acoustical proxies generally results from the combination of a number of independent calibration measurements, as well as regression or inverse models. Direct or indirect measurements of SPMC...

Mutagenicity and genotoxicity of suspended particulate matter in the Seine river estuary ArchiMer
Hubert, Francoise; Moisan, Karine; Munschy, Catherine; Tronczynski, Jacek.
Highly mutagenic compounds such as some PAHs have been identified in surface waters and sediments of the Seine river estuary. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) represents a dynamic medium that may contribute to the exposure of aquatic organisms to toxic compounds in the water column of the estuary. In order to investigate major sources of mutagenic contaminants along the estuary, water samples were taken at 25 in downstream of the outlet of an industrial wastewater-treatment plant (WWTP). SPM samples were analyzed for their genotoxicity with two short-term tests, the Salmonella typhimurium mutagenicity assay (TA98 + S9 mix) and the comet assay in the human HepG2 cell line. Sampling sites receiving effluents from a chemical dye industry and WWTP showed the...

Spatial distribution of suspended particulate matter in Mtwapa creek and Funzi Bay, Kenya OceanDocs
Mavuti, K.M.; Mutua, A.K.; Daro, N.; Tack, M..
Surface water concentrations of inorganic nutrients and suspended particulate matter (SPM) components from Mtwapa and Shirazi creeks in Kenya were measured and compared. This was aimed at assessing the contribution of phytoplankton carbon, particulate organic carbon (POC) and detritus on the total SPM pool, and the influence of sewage discharge on these components of SPM. The results obtained were compared with those from Ramisi, an estuarine system. Using PCA and cluster analysis, three clear clusters of stations were obtained. The two creek systems (Mtwapa and Shirazi) were separated into two distinct clusters. The cluster comprising five stations in Mtwapa and four in Shirazi was characterised by high levels of POC: phytoplankton carbon ratio and to a...

Modelling sand resuspension by waves over a rippled bed OMA
Trouw, K.; Williams, J.J.; Rose, C.P..
With a two-dimensional Kappa-Epsilon-model and equations to describe sediment entrainment, diffusion, convection and settling, wave-induced flow velocities and sediment concentration fields over rippled beds have been calculated. Results from the simulations are compared with time-averaged vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles, C-profiles, measured in a large wave flume using the autonomous multi-sensor instrument STABLE. The simulations make it possible to examine in detail the mechanisms of sediment entrainment, vortex formation and advection. The resulting animations of model output allow a quasi-3-D visualization of sediment resuspension processes and aid quantification of the resulting vertical suspended sediment...

Elemental concentrations and heavy metal pollution in sediments and suspended matter from the Belgian North Sea and the Scheldt estuary OMA
Van Alsenoy, V.; Bernard, P.; Van Grieken, R..
The elemental composition of sediment and suspended matter samples from the Belgian coastal and offshore regions of the Southern Bight of the North Sea and from the Scheldt estuary has been determined using X-ray fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometry.Special attention was given to the heavy metals of the black and grey lists. The bulk sediment and the clay/silt fraction were analyzed. The average heavy metal contents in the fraction <63 µm were comparable to the levels in the suspended matter. Different normalization techniques led to the identification of two different populations of sediments. Most of the sediments were enriched in Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb and Zn but no enrichment was found for Cu and Ni. Comparing these data with older data indicates...

Classification of estuarine particles using automated electron microprobe analysis and multivariate techniques OMA
Bernard, P.C.; Van Grieken, R.E..
The suspended particulate matter from a series of stations in an estuary is automatically analyzed for 11 elements on a particle-by-particle basis by using electron microprobe X-ray microanalysis and an automatic image analysis system. The interpretation of the large acquired data set implies numerical multivariate analysis. The developed procedure consists of using cluster analysis on the particles of individual samples, followed by nearest centroid sorting over all samples from the study area. For the Ems estuary, the procedure provided 13 geochemically different particle types of which the relative abundance through the estuary could be followed and interpreted in terms of estuarine mixing processes. The presented methodology could be applied in other...

Electron microprobe analysis of suspended matter in the Angola Basin OMA
Bernard, P.; Eisma, D.; Van Grieken, R..
Electron microprobe analysis of suspended-matter samples collected at different water depths at ten stations in the Angola Basin indicated that at each station, from top to bottom, the elementary composition of the suspended matter was very similar and differed from the composition of the suspended matter at the adjacent stations. This indicates that the downward settling of the suspended matter is much faster than the horizontal transport and mixing by the currents. Assuming that the suspended matter settles in the form of flocs, or is scavenged by settling flocs, the suspended matter can indeed reach the bottom in a shorter period than needed for the currents to cover the distance between adjacent stations. Comparison with sediment trap data from the...

Hydrodynamic Aspects at Vitória Bay Mouth, ES Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARONCE,FLÁVIA A.A.; QUARESMA,VALÉRIA S..
Understading the hydrodynamic behavior and suspended particulated matter (SPM) transport are of great importance in port regions such as Vitória Harbor, which is located at Vitória Bay, Vitória – ES, Brazil. Vitória Bay is an estuary that has not been systematically assessed through a temporal analysis in order to identify its hydrodynamics characteristics and SPM exchange. This study aims to investigate salt and suspended particulate matter flux at the estuarine mouth of Vitória Bay by understanding the temporal variation of salinity, temperature and tidal currents within the water column and at the channel crosssection. Results showed that the estuarine mouth tended to present partial stratification periods during neap tides and little stratification in...
