ArchiMer
Auda, Yves; Populus, Jacques; Blasco, F.

Seasonal and interannual changes in Intense Benguela Upwelling (1982-1999) ArchiMer
Hagen, E; Feistel, R; Agenbag, Jj; Ohde, T.
Monthly maps of remotely sensed sea surface temperatures derived from NOAA/AVHRR thermal images are used to describe changes in 'Intense Benguela Upwelling' during 1982-1999. The coastal area under investigation lies between 9-34degrees S and 8-20degrees E and the total area of cold water between the coast and the course of the 13 degreesC isotherm is considered to be an index of intense, active upwelling. It exhibits a decreasing trend over the study period of 18 years and some evidence for a quasi-cycle of about 27 months. Seasonal cycles are discussed for the total cold water area as well as for its mean alongshore and offshore extents. The main season of cold surface water was found to occur between July and September during the austral winter. It...

Froidefond, Jm; Jegou, Anne-marie; Hermida, J; Lazure, Pascal; Castaing, P.
The Gironde estuary (France) discharges to the ocean an important amount of suspended particulate matter in the form of turbid plumes. The surface plume is more particularly studied from coastal oceanographic surveys and NOAA/AVHRR satellite data collected during a French programme of coastal oceanography (PNOC-Atlantic). The AVHRR reflectances are atmospherically corrected according to an algorithm based on the clear water concept. The comparison with suspended sediment concentrations are realised by direct and indirect calibrations. The correlations obtained show that at a same concentration the reflectance varies, probably because of varying particle (floc) size and composition. The shape and the surface measured from low resolution (4 km x 4 km) and...

The aim of this paper is to present in a practical fashion the status of the use of remote sensing for the study of coral reef environments through the analysis of work published in the years 1980-2000. We review the scales of the potential work and of that actually conducted, the principal applications and their limiting factors. We detail these limitations which are of a technological nature (spatial and spectral resolution of sensors), as well as often of a conceptual (role of remote sensing in the study) or methodological (image processing) nature. The understanding of these limitations, in relation to the reality of the field, allows identification of work which could be undertaken in the years 2000.

L'algue japonaise Sargassum muticum (Yendo) fensholt. Caractéristiques et répartition ArchiMer
Loraine, Isabelle.
Sargassum muticum is a Japanese alga from the pheophycee class which has been introduced in Europe about fifteen years ago. It has greatly developed on account of its intrinsic characteristics (adaptation, growth speed, reproduction mode, etc...) and the favorable conditions it has encountered. The nuisance it generates can be very high but no efficient fighting solution has been found yet. Only mechanical means can be considered on a one off basis in areas where eradication is indispensable. Any development is faced with the problem of pick up costs. However the most interesting development for Sargassum muticum would be to utilize it as flocculent for suspended organic substances. Location updates for Sargassum muticum in France in 1989 did not show any...

Ligurian sea - annual variation of the sea-surface thermal structure as detected by satellite noaa-5 ArchiMer
Wald, L; Nihous, G.
Examination of one hundred thermographies of the Ligurian Sea, obtained during the years 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1979 by the satellite NOAA 5, reveals the quasi-permanence, over a year, of a me an superfIcial cyclonic circulatiçm, generally characterized by its thermal pattern. The large number of satellite images and the use of specifIc methods permit the description of the an nuai variations in the structure of the horizontal thermal gradients. Results are in close agreement with those provided by previous authors.

Bouhier, Nicolas.
The Antarctic polar ice cap constrains a freshwater flaux into the Austral Ocean through two equally important pathways : a localized and immediate injection through the melting of ice-shelves bases, and a delayed offshore injection through the calving and subsequent melt of icebergs. Some studies reckon that melting icebergs have the capacity to alter the hydrological and biogeo-chemical characteristics of the water column. The numerical models trying to evaluate this impact have shown contrasting results. Yet, they might suffer from a poor representation of the icebergs, namely due to our limited knowledge on both the spatial and size distributions of the icebergs, or even the processes involved in their mass loss. A new method using satellite altimetry...

Determining ridge and runnel longshore migration rate using Spot imagery ArchiMer
Lafon, V; Dupuis, H; Howa, H; Froidefond, Jm.
High-resolution colour satellite imagery is used to map the morphology and to determine the longshore movements of intertidal ridge and runnel systems that characterise the Atlantic southwest coast of France. A couple of Spot images recorded during the summer of 1989 are processed to extract accurate geographical maps of the coastline defined. in this study, as the level corresponding to the lowest astronomical tide. The coastline extraction method is based on a reflectance model, providing depth measurements that were calibrated in the field. This method enables us to map the coastline regardless of the tide level above the lowest astronomical tide at the moment of the image capture. As this model can be extrapolated to a large area, hen sea water is...
