Enhancing the Ostrom social-ecological system framework through formalization Ecology and Society
Hinkel, Jochen; Global Climate Forum; hinkel@globalclimateforum.org; Bots, Pieter W. G.; Delft University of Technology; p.w.g.bots@tudelft.nl.
Frameworks play an important role in analyzing social-ecological systems (SESs) because they provide shared concepts and variables that enable comparison between and accumulation of knowledge across multiple cases. One prominent SES framework focusing on local resource use has been developed by Elinor Ostrom and her colleagues. This framework is an extensive multi-tier collection of concepts and variables that have demonstrated relevance for explaining outcomes in a large number of case studies in the context of fishery, water, and forestry common-pool resources. The further development of this framework has raised a number of issues related to the formal relationships between the large number of concepts and variables involved. In particular, issues...

Habitat Fragmentation and Native Bees: a Premature Verdict? Ecology and Society
Cane, James H; USDA-ARS; jcane@biology.usu.edu.
Few studies directly address the consequences of habitat fragmentation for communities of pollinating insects, particularly for the key pollinator group, bees (Hymenoptera: Apiformes). Bees typically live in habitats where nesting substrates and bloom are patchily distributed and spatially dissociated. Bee studies have all defined habitat fragments as remnant patches of floral hosts or forests, overlooking the nesting needs of bees. Several authors conclude that habitat fragmentation is broadly deleterious, but their own data show that some native species proliferate in sampled fragments. Other studies report greater densities and comparable diversities of native bees at flowers in some fragment size classes relative to undisrupted habitats, but find...

Electronic Field Guides and User Communities in the Eco-informatics Revolution Ecology and Society
Stevenson, R. D.; University of Massachusetts Boston; robert.stevenson@umb.edu; Haber, William A; Missouri Botanical Garden; whaber@racsa.co.cr; Morris, Robert; UMASS Boston; ram@cs.umb.edu.
The recognition that taxonomy is central to the conservation of biodiversity has reestablished the critical role of taxonomy in biology. However, many of the tools taxonomists produce for the identification and characterization of species, e.g., dichotomous keys, have been difficult to use and largely ignored by the general public in favor of field guides, which are essentially browsable picture guides. We review the role of field guides in species identification and discuss the application of a host of digital technologies to produce user-friendly tools for identification that are likely to greatly enhance species identification in the field by nonspecialists. We suggest that wider adoption of the citizen science model and the use of electronic field...

CHILEAN MARINE MOLLUSCA OF NORTHERN PATAGONIA COLLECTED DURING THE CIMAR-10 FJORDS CRUISE Gayana
Cárdenas,Javiera; Aldea,Cristian; Valdovinos,Claudio.
The tip of the South American cone is one of the most interesting Subantarctic areas, both biogeographically and ecologically. Nonetheless, knowledge of the area's biodiversity, in particular that of the subtidal marine habitats, remains poor. Therefore, in 2004, a biodiversity research project was carried out as a part of the cruise Cimar-10 Fjords, organized and supported by the Chilean National Oceanographic Committee (CONA). The results of the subtidal marine mollusk surveys are presented herein. The samples were collected aboard the Agor 60 "Vidal Gormaz" in winter 2004. The study area covered the northern Chilean Patagonia from Seno de Relocanví (41°31'S) to Boca del Guafo (43°49'S), on the continental shelf from 22 to 353 m depth. The Mollusca were...

First record of a ceramiaceous red algal species, Ceramium stichidiosum, from magellanic region, chile Gayana
Mansilla,Andrés; Navarro,Nelso P; Fujii,Mutue T.
A ceramiaceous red alga, Ceramium stichidiosum J. Agardh was found for the first time in waters of Magellanic Strait, Chile. Thalli are usually epiphytic on other macroalgae such as Mazzaella laminarioides (Bory) Fredericq and Sarcothalia crispata (Bory) Leister. They have fully corticated axes with alternate to dichotomous branches, straight tips and six periaxial cells per each axial cell. This report extends the distribution limit of C. stichidiosum from the X Región de los Lagos (42º 58'S; 74º 19'W) to the XII Región de Magallanes (53°37'S; 70°59'W).

REVALUATION OF LATRODECTUS THORACICUS NICOLET, 1849 (ARANEAE: THERIDIIDAE): BIOLOGICAL AND PHYLOGENETIC ANTECEDENTS Gayana
Aguilera,Milenko A; D'Elía,Guillermo; Casanueva,María E.
The number and identity of the species of black widow spiders of the genus Latrodectus that inhabit Chile remain unclear. Here we present results of taxonomic work based on morphologic and molecular characters of a large series of specimens collected throughout Chile, which aimed to assess Chilean Latrodectus diversity. Results show that all studied populations belong to a single species, for which the correct name is Latrodectus thoracicus Nicolet 1849. Therefore, we remove this taxon from the synonymy of L. mactans (Fabricius, 1775). In addition, we suggest that L. mirabilis (Holmberg, 1876) may be junior synonym of L. thoracicus. We recognize two species of black widows for continental Chile, L. thoracicus andi. variegatus Nicolet, 1849. We provided an...

A multivariate analysis of taxonomic limits in Diplolaemus Bell 1843 Gayana
Victoriano,Pedro F; Coronado,Tanía M; Ortiz,Juan Carlos.
The gemís Diplolaemus Bell, 1843 is a common squamate component of the Patagonian región of South América. Considerable taxonomic confusión exists within this gemís, particularly about the status of Chilean-Andean populations and the actual distribution of D. leopardinas (Werner, 1898). In an attempt to clarify the taxonomic status and distribution of Diplolaemus species, we performed a principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant function analysis (DFA) using both standard morphometric and meristic data. Multivariate summaries of morphometric data show that most species are poorly discriminated, with the exception of D. darwinii. In contrast, a PCA analyses performed on the meristic data clearly distinguish three discrete groups: 1. D. darwinii, 2....

DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE MOUSE OPOSSUMS OF THE GENUS THYLAMYS (DIDELPHIMORPHIA, DIDELPHIDAE) IN NORTHEASTERN AND CENTRAL ARGENTINA Gayana
Teta,Pablo; D'Elía,Guillermo; Flores,David; de La Sancha,Noé.
Phylogenetic analysis of a fragment of the mitochondrial genome and qualitative and quantitative assessments of morphological variation suggest that, in its current conception, Thylamys pusillus (Desmarest, 1804) is a complex of at least three species. In the taxonomic arrangement proposed in this work, the populations in the Argentinean provinces of Entre Ríos and Corrientes are here referred to T. citellus (Thomas, 1912), while the small Thylamys that lives in the Argentinean Dry Chaco are provisionally referred to T.pulchellus (Cabrera, 1934). In our scheme, Thylamys pusillus is restricted to the Bolivian and Paraguayan Chaco and the vicinities of northern Formosa province in A rgentina. We provide emended diagnosis for T. citellus and T. pulchellus,...

Extubocellulus spinifer (Hargraves & Guillard) Hasle, Stosch & Syvertsen (Cymatosiraceae, Bacillariophyceae): First report of the species from the Southeastern Pacific with comments on the variability of some of its morphological features Gayana Botánica
Rivera,Patricio; Cruces,Fabiola; Inostroza,Ingrid.
During the taxonomic analysis of strains from marine phytoplankton samples, it was found that a sample contained isolated or short chains of 2-4 small cells. Observations under the electron microscopes revealed the presence of Extubocellulus spinifer (Hargraves & Guillard) Hasle, Stosch & Syvertsen, a minute species until now not reported for the Southeastern Pacific Ocean. In this paper we describe the characteristics of the Chilean cells, comment on the variability of some of its morphological features, and discuss about the differences between the two known species of the genus.

THE GENUS HYDROLITHON FOSLIE (CORALLINALES, RHODOPHYTA) ALONG THE ATLANTIC AND CARIBBEAN COASTS OF MEXICO Gayana Botánica
Mendoza-González,Catalina; Pedroche,Francisco F; Mateo-Cid,Luz Elena.
This paper provides the first monographic account of the genus Hydrolithon Foslie (1909) along the Atlantic and Caribbean coast of Mexico. We found five species of this genus including two new records for this region: H. onkodes (Heydrich) D.Penrose et Woelkerling and H. reinboldii (Weber van Bosse et Foslie) Foslie. The most common species in the study area was H. farinosum (J.V.Lamouroux) D.Penrose et Y.M.Chamberlain. H. onkodes and H. pachydermum (Foslie) J.C.Bailey, J.E.Gabel et D.W.Freshwater were compared with lectotype specimens. All species may be differentiated between them on the basis of the next characteristics: 1) Habit: with or lacking protuberances, free or attached; 2) Thallus construction: monomerous or dimerous; 3) Basal region:...

COMPARATIVE FOLIAR EPIDERMAL MORPHOLOGY OF THE WEST AFRICAN SPECIES OF THE GENUS AFZELIA SMITH (LEGUMINOSAE: AESALPINIOIDEAE) Gayana Botánica
Babalola Kadiri,Akeem; Dele Olowokudejo,James.
The epidermal features of the leaves of the six West African species of Afzelia were examined and compared using light and scanning electron microscopy. The leaves are hypostomatic in all species and stomatal type is paracytic. Anticlinal walls may be undulate or straight-curved and stomatal index ranges from 17.48% in A. bella var. gracilior to 25.20% in A. bipindensis. Porrect and flattened scales distinguish the infra-specific taxa of A. bella while presence of unicellular trichomes separates A. pachyloba from other species. The leaf surface is entirely covered by epicuticular wax deposits and the stomata are either raised or sunken in the genus. Using these foliar epidermal characters, an artificial key has been prepared to facilitate identification of...

MORPHOLOGY OF THE SYMMETRICAL MORPHOTYPES OF CENTRONELLA REICHELTII VOIGT (FRAGILARIACEAE, BACILLARIOPHYCEAE) FROM PATAGONIAN ENVIRONMENTS Gayana Botánica
Echenique,Ricardo O.; Guerrero,José M..
The ultrastructure of symmetrical valves of Centronella reicheltii Voigt, resembling the former C. rostafinskii Woloszynska, is studied for the first time, and their morphology is compared with the asymmetrical forms. Valve morphology and morphometry of both morphotypes are similar and only differ in the shape and striation pattern of the valve centre and the arrangement of the arm bases. However, since they occur in environments with different trophic status, the new combination C. reicheltii f. rostafinskii is proposed for the symmetrical valves, because this distinction may provide ecologically useful information.
