Lagoonal sand smelts (atherina lagunaea, teleostei, atherinidae) inhabit marine shallow waters of the coasts of djerba island (tunisia) OceanDocs
Bouriga, N.; Selmi, S.; Aurelle, D.; Barthelemy, R.; Quignard, J-P.; Trabelsi, M..

Aspects of the biology and feeding ecology of the orbiculate cardinal fish Sphaeramia orbicularis (Cuvier, 1828) (Teleostei: Apogonidae) in a Kenyan mangrove forest OMA
Mees, J.; Mwamsojo, G.U.; Wakwabi, E.O..
The orbiculate cardinal fish Sphaeramia orbicularis is the most abundant teleost among the root system of the extensive mangrove forests bordering Gazi Bay, Kenya. The species was never recorded from the bay proper and it can thus be considered to be a true mangrove resident. The sampled population clearly consisted of two cohorts: the modes were approximately 65mm and 80 mm. Most individuals with standard lengths >40mm had mature gonads ; the number of eggs ranged from 4,700 to 10,000. S. orbicularis are carnivores, mainly feeding on small epi- and hyperbenthic crustaceans. Numerically, gammaridean amphipods and tanaids were the dominant prey categories in the stomachs of both size classes. Individuals belonging to...

The ultrastructure of the mullet Mugil curema Valenciennes (Teleostei, Mugilidae) spermatozoa Zoologia
Eiras-Stofella,Daura Regina; Gremski,Waldemiro; Kuligowski,Sandra Maria.
The structure of the spermatozoon of Mugil curema Valenciennes, 1836 was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The spermatic head is rounded and formed by the nucleus containing granular chromatin, firmly packed resulting in a mass extremely electron dense. The acrossome is absent. The midpiece is characterized by the presence of two centrioles, a plasmatic canal, very few vesicles, and several mitochondria (9-10) with aproximately 0.50µm in diameter. The head and the midpiece are aproximately 1.56µm in diameter. The flagellum conforms to the 9 + 0 flagellar pattern near the transition region in its midpiece and is 9 + 2 from there on up to the distal region of the axoneme. The electron density in the A tubules 1, 2, 5 and 6 shows...

Reprodução de Stellifer rastrifer (Jordan) (Teleostei, Sciaenidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
A total of 1312 individuais of S. rastrifer were sampled from March 1994 to September 1996 at the Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazilian coast. This species is a permanently inhabitant of the mangrove area throughout the year. The weight/length relationship of the species in the region is "In TW =-12,35 + 3,22 In TL", and the individuais may reach 172mm of total length. The analyses of gonadal morphology and gonadossomatic index indicate that S. rastrifer is a multiple spawner species, that reproduces at the mangrove area during a long period of the year. The reproductive activity is more intense during the winter and mainly the spring, when the value of Condition Factor declines and empty folheies are found in the ovaries.

Dynamics and cytochemistry of oogenesis in Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier) (Teleostei, Characiformes, Characidae) from Rio Sapucaí, Minas Gerais State, Brazil Zoologia
Garcia,José Antônio Dias; Chini,Helena A.S.; Maistro,Edson Luis; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani.
Oogenesis involves a set of transformations which are undergone by female germ cells These cells change into oogonias and then into mature oocytes. Sexually mature female fish were collected monthly, during one year, from the Sapucaí River, a tributary of the Rio Grande, which is part of the Furnas Reservoir in the state of Minas Gerais. During the several stages of maturation, we observed small round oogonias with a large nucleus, a single nucleolus, and weakly stained cytoplasm with eosinophilic granules. The primary oocytes showed a large basophilic nucleus, with a developed peripheral nucleolus and a reduced cytoplasm. The previtellogenic oocytes presented voluminous cytoplasm and nucleus with several small peripheral nucleoli. The oocytes underwent...

Sub-lethal concentrations of monocrotophos affect aggressive behavior of the fishes Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski (Teleostei, Characidae) and Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus) (Teleostei, Cichlidae) Zoologia
Cruz,André Luis da.
This study investigated the effects of sublethal concentrations of the pesticide monocrotophos (organophosphate) on the agonistic behavior of two fishes species, Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000 (lambari) and Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Nile tilapia). Sublethal concentrations of the pesticide for the two species were determined and lambari was more resistant than Nile tilapia. The sublethal concentrations were smaller than 400 mgl-1 for lambari and 20 mgl-1 for Nile tilapia. The two species were tested in grouping conditions (triads) and isolation, under monocrotophos concentrations of 200 mgl-1 for lambari and 5 mgl-1 for Nile tilapia. The concentration decreased the aggressiveness in lambari, but in Nile tilapia an...

Indicadores reprodutivos das espécies de Citharichthys Bleeker (Teleostei, Pleuronectiformes) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso C; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
The species of Citharichthys Bleeker, 1862, C. arenaceus Evermann & Marsh, 1900 and C. spilopterus Günther, 1862, are the most common flatfishes found in Guaratuba Bay, south Brazil. Different size categories of these flatfish occur in the mangrove area throughout the year. The Gonadosomatic Index, the Condition Factor, and the morphological analyses of the gonads from samples obtained between 1994 and 1996 reveals a spawning activity during late Spring and early Summer. This period coincides with the increase in temperature and decrease in salinity. Spawning evidence and the presence of ali size categories throughout the year indicate that Citharichthys spp. are permanent inhabitants of the mangrove in Guaratuba Bay, where they complete their life...

CAMBIOS EN DIVERSIDAD Y DISTRIBUCIÓN DE PECES NATIVOS POR LA PRESENCIA DE DOS ESPECIES INVASORAS EN EL RÍO ATACAMES, NOROCCIDENTE DEL ECUADOR Acta biol.Colomb.
JIMÉNEZ-PRADO,Pedro; VASQUEZ,Fernando.

Morphological study of the spermatogenesis in the teleost Piaractus mesopotamicus Biocell
da Cruz-Landim,Carminda; Camargo Abdalla,Fábio; da Cruz-Höfling,Maria Alice.
The spermatogenesis of Piaractus mesopotamicus was investigated under light and transmission electron microscopy. The specimens were captured from their natural environment (Rio Miranda and Rio Aquidauana, Pantanal Matogrossense, Brazil) during April and September. The results were compared with the spermatogenic data of specimens under captivity condition. In both conditions, P. mesopotamicus presented the typical spermatogenesis pattern of the teleost fishes, showing no significative differences. The spermatozoon was classified as type I, which has a globular head without acrosome, a short middle piece and a long tail constituted only by the flagellum. This type of spermatozoon is considered the basic type in fishes.
