Deep Currents in the Rift Valley of the North Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Lahaye, Noe; Gula, Jonathan; Thurnherr, Andreas M.; Reverdin, Gilles; Bouruet-aubertot, Pascale; Roullet, Guillaume.
Over mid-ocean ridges, the interaction between the currents and the topography gives rise to complex flows, which drive the transport properties of biogeochemical constituents, and especially those associated with hydrothermal vents, thus impacting associated ecosystems. This paper describes the circulation in the rift valley along the Azores sector of the North Mid-Atlantic Ridge, using a combination of in-situ data from several surveys and realistic high-resolution modeling. It confirms the presence of a mean deep current with an up-valley branch intensified along the right inner flank of the valley (looking downstream), and a weaker down-valley branch flowing at shallower depth along the opposite flank. The hydrographic properties of the rift-valley...

Hydrological Structure, Circulation and Water Mass Transport in the Gulf of Cadiz ArchiMer
Alves, Jose Miguel Rodrigues; Carton, Xavier; Ambar, Isabel.
Hydrological and LADCP data from four experiments at sea (Semane 1999, 2000/1 2000/3, 2001) are used to describe the structure and circulation of Mediterranean Water in the Gulf of Cadiz. These data were gathered on meridional sections along 8?20′W and 6?15′W and between these longitudes on a zonal section along 35?50′N. The mesoscale and the submesoscale structures (Mediterranean Water Undercurrents, meddies, cyclones) observed along these sections are characterized in terms of thermohaline properties and of velocity. The transports of mass and salt in each class of density (North Atlantic Central Water, Mediterranean Water, North Atlantic Deep Water) are computed with an inverse model. The model indicates a general eastward flux in the Central Water...

Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and the Southern Hemisphere supergyre ArchiMer
Speich, Sabrina; Blanke, Bruno; Cai, Wenju.
The ocean's role in climate manifests itself through its high heat capacity, its own rich internal dynamics and its ability to transport vast quantities of heat and freshwater. Of particular interest is the global ocean circulation associated with the Atlantic meridional overturning (AMOC). Because observations are sparse, the detailed global structure of the AMOC remains poorly understood, particularly the pathways along which water returns to the Atlantic to compensate the export of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). Here we provide the first quantitative 3-dimensional global view of the AMOC using a Lagrangian reconstruction which integrates hundred of thousands water particle trajectories in an ocean model. The resulting pattern elucidates the role of...

Efecto de las condiciones de transporte, recepción, aclimatación y siembra de Nauplios de Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) sobre la sobrevivencia en larvicultura OceanDocs
Suárez, J.A.; García, A.; Newmark, F.; Bador, R..
In order to identify initial factors that can affect shrimp postlarvae survival during larval rearing, three larval rearing facilities from the Caribbean coast of Colombia were samplesd for 71 nauplii batches during 10 months of 1996. For each batch, cualitative variables (origin, transportation mode, presence of bacteria in transport water) and quantitative variables (transportation time and density, physicochemical parameters of the water, proportion of each nauplii stage and of deformed nauplii) were monitored. Water quality and density (nauplii/l) variables were monitored during the whole process of nauplii packing, transport, reception, acclimatization and stocking. To evaluate the relationship between qualitative variables and larval rearing...

Analysis of tidal and residual currents across semi-enclosed bay mouth based on shipboard ADCP measurements. OceanDocs
Li, Xibin; Sun, Xiaoyan; Yao, Zhigang.
Based on 25 hours shipboard ADCP measurements across semi-enclosed bay mouth(Kemen Channel), time series of tidal currents over 12 sites, which distribute evenly along the transect, were constructed to improve our understanding of tidal characteristics and residuals in this region. The tidal currents in Kemen Channel were identified as the regular semidiurnal and reversing tidal flows, with its behaviour more like standing waves. Moreover, the flood currents in the lower layers were found to be ahead of that in the upper layers and vice versa for ebb tides. The major of tidal ellipse for M2 constituent was found to be larger close to the southern side of the channel, with its incline also increasing toward the south. The signs of M4 constituent were also...

Size spectra, body width and morphotypes of intertidal nematodes: an ecological interpretation OMA
Tita, G.; Vincx, M.; Desrosiers, G..
Nematode species from three intertidal assemblages (St Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada) were studied in order to form an ecological interpretation of three allometric attributes: body width, size spectra, and morphotypes. The three assemblages were characterized by a very similar sediment grain median (Md) but different silt-clay proportions: A1 (upper-tidal level; Md=122 µm; silt=34.8%), A3 (mid-tidal level; Md=182 µm; silt=12.8%), and A5 (lower-tidal level; Md=122 µm; silt=6.8%). Silt-clay proportions were an influential factor in determining the mean nematode body width, used as a morphological discriminant between burrowing and interstitial organisms. A plot of the number of species vs the body width-classes showed two peaks: between 19.3 and 22.6 µm...

Environmental fate of S-Metolachlor: a review Planta Daninha
Zemolin,C.R.; Avila,L.A.; Cassol,G.V.; Massey,J.H.; Camargo,E.R..
S-metolachlor is a preemergent herbicide used for the control of annual grasses and small-seeded broadleaf weeds in more than 70 agricultural crops worldwide. Recently, Smetolachlor has been used to control imidazolinone-resistant red rice in rice-soybean rotation in lowland environments of the Southern Brazil. However, limited information concerning the environmental fate of S-metolachlor in lowland soil is available in the literature. Thus, this review was designed to describe the major transport and dissipation processes of Smetolachlor in attempting to improve weed management programs used in rice-soybean rotation and mitigate environmental contamination of lowland areas.

Agricultural markets in Benin and Malawi AgEcon
Fafchamps, Marcel; Gabre-Madhin, Eleni Z..
Based on original trader surveys, this paper examines how agricultural traders operate in Benin and Malawi. Results indicate that the largest transaction costs are search and transport. The use of modern technology is limited. Search methods rely principally on personal visits by the trader, and quality control requires the presence of the trader at the time of purchase. This increases costs, as the trader has to travel a lot, and makes it difficult for trading enterprises to grow. Since enterprises remain very small, personal transport and search time represent a non-negligible share of marketing costs.

Livelihoods, Growth, and Links to Market Towns in 15 Ethiopian Villages AgEcon
Dercon, Stefan; Hoddinott, John.
Rural and urban spaces are usually regarded as “separate” in both development theory and practice. Yet there are myriad links between them. Urban areas, including regional urban centers such as local market towns, provide households with new opportunities to sell goods and services. These opportunities increase household income by employing previously unemployed household resources or because households reallocate household resources so as to take advantage of new, more profitable activities. Links to market towns improve the prices received by rural households because households can benefit from increased demand for their goods or because the larger market is better able to absorb production from rural areas without causing prices to decline. These links...

This study, conducted along the year 2003, was held in the environment of a cement company plant located in the São Paulo State. That industry has used carbon black as predominant energetic source which besides resulting a huge emission of gases (CO and CO2) into the atmosphere, has been more expensive than some other alternatives of biomass sources. Taking into consideration the location of that plant, there was a large supply of available biomass to be used as alternative fuel for industrial ovens. Several biomasses were analyzed and it was concluded that the sugar cane bagasse and residues of wood (sawdust and woodchips) were the most appropriate alternatives to such an industry.

Feeding the Cities and Greenhouse Gas Emissions - Beyond the Food Miles Approach AgEcon
de Cara, Stephane; Fournier, Anne; Gaigne, Carl.
In this paper, we study the impact of urbanization on the location of agricultural production and the GHG emissions related to transportation activities. We develop an economic geography model where the location of agricultural activities and urban population are endogenous. We show that increasing agricultural yields induce the spatial concentration of agricultural production in the least urbanized region if agricultural transport costs are relatively low and in the most urbanized region otherwise. In addition, interregional trade in agricultural commodities is desirable to reduce GHG emissions, except when urban population is equally split between cities. However, the market may induce too much agglomeration of agricultural production when yields are...

SUSTAINABLE BIOFUELS IN HUNGARY AND EUROPE – SELF-DEFEATING INCENTIVES? AgEcon
Szendro, Gabor.
Substituting fossil fuels has been a prominent issue in the EU in recent years. Energy security, agricultural and environmental considerations have all played a part in the development of alternative fuels and in the creation of incentives promoting their use. The system, like big systems in general, cannot react to new developments quickly and it seems there are elements that we should seriously consider removing or replacing to avoid adverse effects. This paper will attempt to summarize the current issues and propose possible solutions in the form of seven recommendations to make the European incentive system more effective in the interest of sustainable rural development, an area that is of prime importance for Hungary....
