Choix de produits pour lutter contre la pollution du milieu marin par les hydrocarbures. IV. Toxicite relative de sept produits emulsionnants antipetrole. ArchiMer
Maggi, Pierre.
Toxicity of seven emulsifying agents for treating oil spills (ISTPM designation E sub(22), E sub(30), E sub(41), E sub(46), E sub(47), E sub(52) and E sub(53)) was determined using eight marine species (three gastropods, one bivalve, two crustacean and one fish). Results are tabulated as LD sub(50). E sub(47) was least toxic to the species studied, but it could still perhaps harm other plant and animal species.

Bilan du suivi de l'exploitation industrielle de la crépidule en Bretagne Nord (baies de Saint-Brieuc et du Mont Saint-Michel) 2002-2005 ArchiMer
Blanchard, Michel; Hamon, Dominique.
The slipper-limpet (Crepidula fornicata) is a marine gastropod which causes serious perturbations in shellfish beds, because of spatial spreading and density rising. Along French coasts, in Northern Brittany, two bays are highly colonized : bay of Saint-Brieuc, centre for scallops fishery, and bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, a famous oyster-farming area, with a total limpet stock about 450 000 metric tons. The association AREVAL was founded in 2001 to manage there, an industrial collect of limpets by a succing-dredge, followed ashore by a treatment for calcareous soil improvement. The scientific survey, contracted to IFREMER, included measurements of long andshort-term dredge's effects on grounds and limpet population, and proposals to set up dredging...

Impact on non target organisms of anti-marine wood-borer treatments. Evaluation of stress imposed by treatments on organisms from test sites ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Gras, Paul; Adessi, L..
In European waters, significant economic damages to wooden structures are caused by bivalves molluscs and crustaceans. Treatments like copper-chrome-arsenic mixtures (CCA) were designed to prevent settlement of these wood borer species. However, limited and conflicting evidence regarding the toxicity to non-target organisms are available in the literature. This report aims to provide insights regarding the CCA leachates' toxicity to an important aquaculture species, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis for which much information on normal and stressed physiology is available for purposes of comparisons. The mussels are usually considered as a particularly suitable species for biological monitoring (Smaal and Widdows, 1994). To address the CCA leachate issue, two...

Traitement des crevettes contre le noircissement .Mise au point d'une ligne de traitement ArchiMer
Chantreau, Patrick.
Once fished, the shrimps must be cooled quickly in water cooled in order to slow down all chemical and bacteriological activities. In addition, in order to avoid blackening (mélanose) shrimps (céphalothorax and legs) it is necessary to treat those with an antioxydant product. The product currently used to inhibit this enzymatic change is the soda niétabisuifite (Na-> S7 O5), until now, after being fished. the shrimps were directly soaked in a cooled water tank, containing the pesticide. The solution of treatment was progressively prepared needs. The concentration of this one was approximately 2 to 3% of métabisulfite, that is to say 6 to 9 G of SO2 per liter for a starting product containing 320 G of SO2 approximately. In order to preserve a good...

Experiments were canied out to assess the copper-chrome-arsenic (CCA) trealment effeets on the Blue mussel Mytilus edulis physiology. Experimental design included two complementary approaches: 1) scope for growth esrimates based upon the energy balance between respiration energy loss and energy gained from feeding processes. 2) a biological early waming system for valve behavior monitoring under CCA exposures. Various temperature range (seasonal effeet). physiological status (mature & immature mussels) as weil as CCA concentrations (from 0 to 48kg/m3) and rime exposure were tested. Significant monality rates for the experimental mussel populations were recorded in alI experimental modalities but the 2kg/m3 CCA treatment concentration. Overall results...

Traitement des langoustines et des crevettes contre le noircissement ArchiMer
Chantreau, Patrick; Vallet, Jean-luc.
The conservation of crawfish requires the use of chemical substances making it possible to limit blackening. This phenomenon this blackening (melanine) is due to the coordinated action of three elements: - oxygen, - an enzyme (cupro-protein), - a suitable substrate, tyrosin or the dihydroxyphénylalanine. The absence of the one of them allows a notorious reduction in the phenomenon. Several antioxydant products, were used to prevent the formation of the mélanine. The métabisutfite of soda or potassium as well as soda bisulfite in acid solution, are currently used to treat crawfish and shrimps. Several methods of use of these pesticides exist, we propose in this report to present the principal ones, as well as the control methods making it possible to...

Effluents from land based marine farms: nature, treatment, valorisation, modelisation. Applications to fish and shrimp rearing ArchiMer
Hussenot, Jerome; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Martin, Jean-louis.
Fish culture (seabass, turbot...) on the French metropolitan coast, and shrimp culture in the overseas territories (essentially New Caledonia and Tahiti) are subject to a regular development through land based farms. Three thematic of research on aquaculture ponds are carried out in CREMA-L’Houmeau, in collaboration with producers. The aim of the first one is to determine the optimal rearing conditions (stocking density, water renewal rate, input of oxygen, rate of feeding...) which allow to minimise the quantity of wastes for a similar final biomass. The second part aims to reduce the nutrient loading in the effluent, through open-air treatments: sedimentation ponds, foam fractionation, mass production of phytoplankton, and rearing of molluscs on the...

Scientific Opinion on Norovirus (NoV) in oysters: methods, limits and control options ArchiMer
NoV is highly infectious, and there is no threshold infectivity limit for NoV detected by PCR. The probability of becoming infected increases with the dose but depends also on the characteristics of the organism, the food matrix and the host factors. The relationship between the number of infectious virus particles and the number of virus genome copies detected by quantitative PCR is not a constant, and it is important to realise that the infectious risk associated with low level positive oysters as determined by real-time PCR may be overestimated. Quantitative data on viral load from areas compliant with current EU legislative requirements (E. coli standards) during January-March 2010 in 3 selected member states, show that a viral limit of 100, 200, 500,...

Pulsed light is a new method intended for the decontamination of food surfaces using short, high frequency pulses of an intense broad spectrum. The effects of broad spectrum pulsed light on the survival of Listeria monocytogenes Scott A, Listeria monocytogenes CNL, Pseudomonas fluorescens MF37 and Photobacterium phosphoreum SF680 populations on agar and in a liquid medium were investigated during this study. The sterilisation system generated 1.5 J cm(-2) per pulse with eight lamps for 300 mu s. In the case of surface-seeded cells, a 7.8, 8.14 and > 7.14 log reduction was obtained for L. monocytogenes, Ps. fluorescens MF37 and Ph. phosphoreum, respectively, after a single pulse of treatment. Inactivation levels were lower for depth-plated cells: indeed,...

INFECTIONS IN THE BITE SITE AFTER ENVENOMING BY SNAKES OF THE Bothrops GENUS J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
JORGE,M. T.; RIBEIRO,L. A..
Envenomation caused by snakes of the Bothrops genus produces a lesion in the bite site and can result in extensive necrosis. The dead tissue can be secondarily infected by bacteria that come from the snake, and the bacteria can be inoculated at the moment of the bite. The bacteria that most commonly cause infection are the enterobacteria, mainly Morganella morganii, Proteus rettgeri, Enterobacter sp., and Escherichia coli. Group D streptococci including here Enterococcus sp. and the Bacteroides sp. are also involved. Based on a study of the sensibility of these bacteria, it has been suggested that this infection must be treated with chloramphenicol, as a sole antimicrobial agent, or with the combinations of benzylpenicillin or ampicillin with...

Use of antivenoms for the treatment of envenomation by Elapidae snakes in Guinea, Sub-Saharan Africa J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Baldé,Mamadou C; Chippaux,Jean-Philippe; Boiro,Mamadou Y; Stock,Roberto P; Massougbodji,Achille.
Background In Guinea Elapids are responsible for 20% of envenomations. The associated case fatality rate (CFR) ranged 15-27%, irrespective of treatment. Results We studied 77 neurotoxic envenomations divided in 3 groups: a set of patients that received only traditional or symptomatic treatments, and two other groups that received either 2 or 4 initial vials of Antivipmyn® Africa renewed as necessary. CFR was 27.3%, 15.4% and 17.6%, respectively. Although antivenom treatment was likely to reduce CFR, it didn’t seem to have an obvious clinical benefit for the patients, suggesting a low treatment efficacy. Mean delay to treatment or clinical stages were not significantly different between the patients who recovered and the patients who died, or between...

Pre-hospital treatment of snake envenomation in patients presented AT a tertiary care hospital in Northwestern India J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Chauhan,S.; Faruqi,S.; Bhalla,A.; Sharma,N.; Varma,S.; Bali,J..
Snakebite is an important medical emergency. Anti-snake venom along with supportive care is the only specific treatment. However, many people put their faith in non-registered medical practitioners. Where medical aid is available, lack of trained health personnel jeopardizes the situation. This retrospective study, the first of its kind, was aimed at studying the pre-hospital treatment as well as the behavior of patients bitten by snakes and referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. A total of 88 cases that occurred between January 1997 and December 2001 were studied. Seventy patients received treatment prior to admission (the majority was treated by non-registered medical practitioners, registered medical...

Rabies review: immunopathology, clinical aspects and treatment J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Consales,C. A.; Bolzan,V. L..
Among the diseases of viral origin, rabies is unique in its distribution and range of victims since it can afflict all warm-blooded animals. The interaction between the virus and the host population has facilitated the survival of the disease. The rabies virus (RV) has not changed in any significant way and has been capable of taking advantage of conditions suited to the continuance of rabies. Infection by RV is invariably lethal in the absence of protective immune response which, however, can contribute to the pathogenesis of rabies. Proinflammatory cytokines might affect, directly or indirectly, the levels of neurotrophins, growth factors, neurotransmitters and neurotoxins in the brain by activating glia, neurons, and vascular and immune cells. Although...
