Cytogenetic characterization of Aloysia virgata Ruiz and Pavan (Verbenaceae) BABT
Brandão,Aline Dias; Viccini,Lyderson Facio; Recco-Pimentel,Shirlei Maria.
Since previous cytogenetic reports of Aloysia have only described the meiotic behavior and chromosomal number of some species, the aim of this work was to provide detailed cytogenetic description of Aloysia virgata that would contribute to the understanding of the taxonomical organization of the Verbenaceae. Aloysia virgata had a karyotype with 2n = 36 metacentric chromosomes, all with similar size. The large amount of heterochromatin seen after Giemsa staining was confirmed by C-banding. Four nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were detected with an rDNA 45S probe in two homologous pairs and two sites of 5S rDNA located on one chromosomal pair were detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization. The interphase nucleus was classified as semi-reticulate....

Antiviral activity of the Lippia graveolens (Mexican oregano) essential oil and its main compound carvacrol against human and animal viruses BJM
Pilau,Marciele Ribas; Alves,Sydney Hartz; Weiblen,Rudi; Arenhart,Sandra; Cueto,Ana Paula; Lovato,Luciane Teresinha.
Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) is a plant found in Mexico and Central America that is traditionally used as a medicinal herb. In the present study, we investigated the antiviral activity of the essential oil of Mexican oregano and its major component, carvacrol, against different human and animal viruses. The MTT test (3-4,5-dimethythiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) was conducted to determine the selectivity index (SI) of the essential oil, which was equal to 13.1, 7.4, 10.8, 9.7, and 7.2 for acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus type 1 (ACVR-HHV-1), acyclovir-sensitive HHV-1, human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), bovine herpesvirus type 2 (BoHV-2), and bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), respectively. The human rotavirus (RV) and...

Effect of indolebutyric acid and cutting type on vegetative propagation of three Lippia species Ciência Rural
Bispo,Luma dos Passos; Oliveira,Lenaldo Muniz de; Nascimento,Marilza Neves do; Ledo,Carlos Alberto da Silva.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different types of cuttings and indolebutyric acid (IBA) concentration on the vegetative propagation of Lippia insignis , L. lasiocalycina , and L. thymoides . The experiment was conducted in a 2×5 factorial table, by using 2 types of cuttings (apical and medial) and 5 IBA concentrations (0, 250, 500, 750, and 1000mg·L-1) in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), with 4 replications and 10 cuttings per plot. For the propagation of L. insignis , apical cuttings are the most suitable, whereas for L. thymoides and L. lasiocalycina species, both apical and medial cuttings may be used. The application of IBA is not necessary for propagation by cutting of the three species of Lippia.
