Seasonal and interannual variability of zooplankton community in waters off Mallorca island (Balearic Sea, Western Mediterranean): 1994-1999 ArchiMer
Fernandez De Puelles, Ml; Pinot, Jm; Valencia, J.
During 1994-1999, the mesozooplankton community was sampled monthly in the upper sea layer (up to 100 m) along a cross-shelf transect of three stations in waters off Mallorca island. Copepods formed the most abundant group (54%) followed by appendicularians (17%), cladocerans and meroplankton larvae (13%). The abundance of all these groups decreased in the offshore direction but it was not the case for other zooplankton groups. A clear seasonal cycle was evident consisting of a general decrease of the abundance from the beginning to the end of the year. In addition to the general increase during late winter and spring, an absolute maximum was detected in May, particularly important at the neritic station and a relative maximum in March and October. During...

Algal flora associated with a Halophila stipulacea (Forsskal) Ascherson (Hydrocharitaceae, Helobiae) stand in the western Mediterranean ArchiMer
Rindi, F; Maltagliati, F; Rossi, F; Acunto, S; Cinelli, F.
Halophila stipulacea, a seagrass introduced into the Mediterranean Sea as a Lessepsian immigrant, is nowadays common in the eastern Mediterranean, and it was recently recorded in the western Mediterranean; very little information is available about the algal flora associated with this species. During a survey of a Halophila stipulacea stand at Vulcano Island (Eolian Islands, western Mediterranean), samples were collected at three depths (5 m, 15 m and 25 m) for identification of algal epiphytes. Thirty-six species of macroalgae were found. The epiflora of the leaves consisted of 20 species, the others being mixed with or entangled in the rhizomes. On the leaves, Ceramium tenerrimum, Dasya corymbifera, Polysiphonia cfr. tenerrima, Spyridia filamentosa,...

Sea-level control on turbidite activity in the Rhone canyon and the upper fan during the Last Glacial Maximum and early Deglacial ArchiMer
Lombo Tombo, Swesslath; Dennielou, Bernard; Berne, Serge; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Toucanne, Samuel; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Fontanier, Christophe.
The timing, routing and processes of sediment transfer from the continents to the oceans at millennial time-scale are still largely unknown. The potential of turbidite systems (dominantly deposited during sea-level lowstands) to record global or regional environmental fluctuations is usually under-exploited because of the difficulty to obtain robust chronostratigraphic constraints in turbiditic deposits, and therefore to tie changes in sedimentary processes to environmental fluctuations. We were able to obtain a millennial-scale chronostratigraphy based on oxygen isotopes of the scarce foraminifera preserved in turbiditic deposits of the Rhone Turbidite System within the Western Mediterranean. Our results show that 1) objective criteria can be defined for...

A new interstitial species of Gammarella (Amphipoda, Gammaridea) from the western Mediterranean Sea Naturalis
Martí, Amparo; Villora-Moreno, Santiago.
A new species of Gammarella Bate, 1857 is described from shallow water, inhabiting the interstitial system in soft bottoms of the Chafarinas Archipelago (western Mediterranean, N. Africa). The relationships of Gammarella with the genera Nuuanu and Cottesloe are briefly discussed. Numerical taxonomie methods are utilized to differentiate between the morphologically related species and the intermediate species. In a table the principal differentiating characters of Gammarella species are presented. Gammarella garciai n. sp. is characterized by its intermediate position between Gammarella, Nuuanu and Cottesloe, showing an intergradation of characters. Gammarella garciai n. sp. and G. merringannee show ecologically intermediate characters between the larger...

Seasonal variation in copepod abundance in relation to other zooplanktonic groups in the northwestern Mediterranean Naturalis
Kouwenberg, Juliana H.M..
Abundance of adult copepods and late copepodid stages from the upper 50 m in the Golfe du Lion (N.W. Mediterranean) was studied by the author in 1986, 1987, and 1988 for each season. Altogether 87 stations at 22 fixed locations were sampled in the frame of the multidisciplinary French/Spanish programme Pélagolion/Leopel in the near-coastal region (≤ 25 m bottom depth), the Rhone dilution zone, the neritic region (≤ 200 m bottom depth), and the oceanic region (200—2000 m bottom depth). Abundance of other zooplanktonic groups was estimated and total zooplankton biomass was determined for the upper 50 m. Copepod abundance was highest during September 1986 (all regions) and July 1987 (neritic). Total biomass was highest during July 1987 and May/June 1988,...

Phylogeny and biogeography of midwife toads (Alytes, Discoglossidae): a reappraisal Naturalis
Altaba, Cristian R..
The allozyme data base of Arntzen & García-París (1995) on midwife toads (Alytes, Discoglossidae) is reanalysed considering each locus as a discrete character. The phylogeny thus inferred differs from the one obtained with genetic distances in the position of A. dickhilleni from the Betic region – it appears that its sister species is the widespread A. obstetricans, not the Mallorcan endemic A. muletensis. This phylogenetic hypothesis agrees with the taxonomic treatment of the genus based on morphology. A testable biogeographic hypothesis is proposed to account for the diversification of midwife toads in Iberia and the Balearics. The postulated underlying geological changes were the spread of inland saline lakes that divided Iberia (16 mY B.P.), the...

The biological production of marine suspended barite and the barium cycle in the Western Mediterranean Sea OMA
Dehairs, F.A.; Lambert, C.E.; Chesselet, R.; Risler, N..
Suspended particulate barium was measured in the Western Mediterranean along 4 profiles sampled during the PHYCEMED 1 cruise in 1981. The non-terrigenous fraction of particulate barium (i.e. excess Ba; Baxs) can account for up to 96 % of the total barium. This fraction follows the barite settling and dissolution rate model we described earlier for the Atlantic Ocean, conforming barite as the carrier of excess barium. We propose that these Baxs concentrations, which are higher in the Western Mediterranean than in the overall Atlantic, may represent an adaptation of the microplankton to the high densities and density gradients of surface Mediterranean waters. A mass-balance for Ba in the Mediterranean Sea shows:...
